Forum on Antonio Callaway

Hey guys, so last year on another board I created threads with videos of prospects so everyone could watch and chip in with their take on the prospect. Since Rosen, Mayfield and Allen have been discussed ad nauseum, I'm going to create threads for the mid round guys that the Jets bring in for a visit. First up is the troubled ex Florida WR.

Decent size at 6'1" and fast

Well built and strong, plays tough

Very natural athlete, looks smooth on tape

Uses a stutter step to get releases off the line

His acceleration is really impressive

A little stiff in the hips, you don't see a lot of lateral agility to his game

Rounds his routes off and needs to work on sharpening them

Athletically, his game reminds me a little bit of Tim Brown, the old Raiders WR

This cat could be the new version of Lav Coles .  Now all the Jets have to do is find the new version of Chad Pennington .  Oh wait, that guys plays for Washington State and just happens to be available in this draft .

Give the Kid an opportunity and let him make his own bones .

Waiting for @JiF to jump in on this one.

Legit, the more I look at how underwhelming the WR's are in this draft, Callaway may be the best of the bunch.  As I've said before, it's all about what's going on between the ears.  If he can keep his head on straight and just concentrate on Football, he could be the steal of the draft.  I compared him to Tyrek Hill because of his big play ability/off field issues and he ended up being a mid round pick well worth the risk.  I think the better comparison the more I think about it is Stefon Diggs.

As you see on the tape, they played him every where.  Outside, in the slot, returning kicks...kid can do it all.  He's a utility knife type of player, can catch everything, he's elusive but he can just flat out run you as well.  The other big factor to remember when looking at his tape, if the Gators offense has been absolutely terrible.  He's played with a revolving door of terribleness at QB.  Callaway with the ball in hands, kick off or pass...was the Gators best offensive weapon by far.

If the team that selects Callaway, selects a Callaway who has truly learned from his lessons and is focused on Football, like he's claiming he is...is going to get the steal of the draft.

this is not a trolling type response but just a serious question/comment... so you say tyrek hill and Diggs, what about Percy Harvin? Harvin sounds like this kid a lot.

the question is, with Robby already kind of being a head case how many more do we add?

Harvin was the most dynamic Football player I've ever seen wear Orange and Blue and is my all time favorite Gator.  Tim Tebow never won a title without him.  Dude was vital to those championship runs. He was literally a 1st down every time he touched the ball.  He average 9.5 per on the ground and 14.5 in the air.  He was a big play waiting to happen but he was also the most steady move the chains guy I've ever seen.  I've legit never seen a player like him so I cant answer this question without bias.  I loved Percy Harvin.

That said, they are similar in a lot of ways.  I dont think Callaway was quite the same level of talent.  Percy could have been a RB/QB/WR, whatever the **** he wanted to be.  Callaway was drawing that comparison during his Freshman year but I dont think he's as dynamic.  Though, he might be a better pure WR than Percy, hence why I'm giving him the Diggs comparison.

The other part of that comparison is Percy was a sure fire no doubt about 1st rounder even with his injuries and off field concerns.  Diggs and Hill were mid round picks, hence my comparison.  I see Callaway going in the 4th.

Yeah, I remember Harvin in college was a for real stud.

thanks.. i guess I am just wondering with us having 16 receivers now, adding Callaway seems feasible, but with Anderson's issues would we do it? I don't like passing on talent its just the question i ask myself

They're bringing him in for a visit.  And overall, this draft is terrible.  If a talent like him drops, you take him and roll the dice.

Ok your the GM, and your dead set on drafting a WR\PR\KR dynamic player to help your special teams, and possibly be a huge weapon, and mismatch for your brand new shiny 1st round franchise QB, and you have 2 names on the board that’s being debated based on EVERYTHING on field, and off who you taking Callaway, or Dante Pettis?

Ugh...that's a tough call.  I cant say I've watched a ton of Pettis.  I've watched some and he looks the part.  Smooth route runner, highly productive, incredible punt returner, etc.  I think the pedigree and the fact he has a family of professional athletes to guide him through his career is huge.  Though watching John Ross bust out scares me a bit.

I'm just not sure who the better athlete is but I think they're very similar players.  They both kind of do the same thing.

The homer in me would say Callaway.  I think he could have had the chance at being a top 20 pick if he played last year.  I think Pettis was always going to be a 2nd-3rd rounder because I dont think he's a special athlete like Callaway (which makes his punt return ability so insane).

IDK man - all things the same, Callaway...but they're not, so Pettis.  haha

Ok another scenario your looking for a big time red zone target, it’s Rd 4 is Auden Tate from Fla St a guy you would jump on in that spot?  6’5” crazy TD numbers with like 14 the last 2 seasons, but like only 40 receptions, still brought in 10 TD’s this season after the starting QB went down early in the season.

I wouldnt touch Tate. He's a slug.  Maybe if they were trying to move him to TE but he's not fast enough to play WR in the NFL.  IMHO.

Several people have confided in me that additional and new red flags have popped up on former Florida receiver Antonio Callaway since the combine.

The talented receiver and return specialist turned in a terrific combine last month after sitting on the sidelines in 2017. Callaway, along with six other players, was suspended by the Gators last August for a violation of team rules. Josh Norris of Rotoworld reported earlier this week that the New York Jets brought Callaway in for an official visit.

What are these new additional red flags? The article doesnt go into detail.

It didn’t say.

That's weird.  Supposedly he's been on his very best behavior since he declared.  Hired a firm to guide him through this process and keep him out of trouble.  Rumor in Gville is he actually approached Mullen about returning to school and he told him, pursuing his dreams is his best option and recommended that route.

The one thing I will say about Callaway is, it's not like he did anything crazy stupid like Joe Mixon or Dede Westbrook.  I think he just got in with a bad crowd at Florida and was just always somewhere he shouldnt have been.  But he's not out there beating women and getting caught with guns.  It's all bad decision making and weed.  Which might not change once you hand him money but who knows?  Kid is talented, that's for sure.

Good info. Seems like he’s trying

Not sure what Tony was referring to. Not saying Tony does this but for all we know maybe a team source gave him this hoping Callaway drops more.

could be this:

“He’ll fail at least one drug test in the NFL,” one scout told NFL Draft Analyst Dane Brugler, who publishes an in-depth draft book for NFLDraftScout. “Put that in your guide.”

Gang Green should take a hard pass.

Yeah buts this isn’t a new development.  He smokes weed, it’s well documented.  And predicting he’d fail again isnt going out on a limb.  If you’re only fear is him failing a drug test than give him the Janoris Jenkins treatment and hire someone to keep him on track ie; let him know when he can and can’t smoke so he passes the drug test.  Haha

I took it as maybe he failed a test from the combine so he's already coming in w/1 strike. Just a guess and could be what Tony was referring to.

He can play, it’s whether he can stay out of trouble and just do the right things.  If his head is on right he will be a steal.

Yes absolutely BUT I think there's a greater chance that it won't stay on right. With 2 fewer picks than we started with if I'm Macc I pass.

Wide receiver Antonio Callaway
Projection: Signed as an undrafted free agent
Analysis: “He’s a disaster. I don’t think he’s going to get drafted; I really don’t. Two weeks ago, I said that there were new red flags. Now, NFL.com is reporting that he admitted to smoking weed during the combine. I think, in part, he was afraid that he may get caught, may have failed the drug test at the combine, which some people have told me he did. … I don’t think he gets drafted. Let’s put it this way: [Demarcus Robinson] was more talented, didn’t have as many problems, and he went in the fourth round. [Callaway would be] a top-45 pick [without red flags].”
