Muhammad Wilkerson: I’m going to get back to being the dominant player I can be

After seven seasons with the Jets, Muhammad Wilkerson is ready for what some close to him are calling a “rebirth,” Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports reports. Wilkerson, 28, signed a one-year, $5 million deal with the Packers, with another $2.75 million available in incentives.

It gives Wilkerson a chance to prove he still has it.

“I just learned that’s how this business is,” Wilkerson said, via La Canfora. “I won’t be the first player and I won’t be the last that some of these things happen to. So, is there a little extra motivation? Yeah, a little bit. But at the same time . . . everybody is entitled to their own opinion. I’m my own man, and I know what I can do and what type of player I am capable of being, and I feel like I’m going to be able to get back to being the dominant player I can be.

“There is a lot more in this tank, and I know that. I’m ready for this change and the doubters, I’m ready to pretty much shut them up. And people will still talk of course, as people will, but it’s a motivation for me definitely.”

Wilkerson carried a $16.7 million base salary for 2018 with the Jets, and they weren’t willing to pay that for a player who has battled injuries the past two seasons and found himself in the coaches’ doghouse. The former first-round pick arrives in Green Bay healthy and with an organization giving him a clean slate.

“I always had some ups and downs from the time I walked in One Jets Drive,” Wilkerson said. “So to come to Green Bay, it’s all about winning, and they’re always in the hunt, and that’s something that I definitely want to be a part of. It’s definitely something different for me.

“I don’t mean to knock any player or anybody, but I just don’t want to be one of those guys in Year 10, or even after that, I’m still trying to find a team that’s winning and playing in January and February. I want to win now and be a part of a winning culture now and I want to get to the Super Bowl now. That’s really why I chose Green Bay.”

Remember when everyone was argueing over who was better between wilk and Richardson pretty funny in hindsight looking at both their terrible stats from last year

People used to debate who was better between Wilk and JJ Watt.

Mo took a huge pay cut so he just might have a decent year this year, sign a huge contract then turn back into the Mo we all know and hate.

Seems to be a thing with D-lineman. Do they all just do this because it’s just the Dlineman thing to do ? Play hard until you get paid, then be a lazy pos.

Is he saying he dogged it on purpose, just to get out of town? if so, that is a new low!  I get that losing can be demotivating but man up and do something about it, this victim mentality drives me crazy

Bet he has double (or more) the sacks Williams has in 2018.

Don’t you think that could happen and yet Williams could have the better season ?  Why do I have this feeling that some Jet fans would love to see an offensive explosion even if the team had a losing record ?  Gatineau held the sack record until Fabre and Strahan decided differently, yet, for some odd ball reason the Jets defense couldn’t come up with a timely stop when it was needed .

I wonder if when Gastineau was accumulating those sack numbers if he was playing the scheme the way it was designed?

Williams is the most disappointing of our three top drafted DE types, on the field. And he’s the only one Bowles so far has been able to coach. That is all.

Seriously. What a whiner.

In what way has Williams disappointed ?  He came to the Jets as a dominating 3T defensive tackle and was asked to play the role of DE in a 34 front .  Last season he injured his wrist just before the start of the season and it affected the way he started the season . Williams was the right choice on draft day because he was the highest rated player on the board but considering that the Jets were planning on running a 34 scheme, the OLBer  might have been the better choice .

When you draft a player, you should put that player in the best position to succeed instead of forcing that player into whatever scheme you want to run .

I was surprised by his lack of desire or effort after the contract signing ... Mainly because the JETS showed such good will is signing him after that leg injury. Truly a sad case .. I wish he would take responsibility for his situation and show some gratitude towards this team ... He seems like an infant.

I wish him the best ... and hope he can marure, learn and grow from this as a person...

... If not he must be some kind of douchebag.

I wonder how an organisation with a top two 2 NFL franchise QB, will deal with him. After he's late to meetings and taking plays off?

They would cut him but that will not happen since Pettine will light a fire and Mo will be on top form, some other team will pay him after a couple of years (and maybe a SB in GB) then he will retire

Mac should have extended him or traded him two years earlier, Mo's revenge was apparent the last couple of years

I doubt it but maybe Mo has finally grown up. Maybe he realizes that you have to bring it every down, every day. Maybe he figured out that talent is not enough and you to work hard to get to the top and stay there. Maybe he knows the worst thing that ever happened to him was getting the big money and complacency became his worst enemy. Maybe. I doubt it. Most likely he has a good year and signs a deal and goes back to being the loafing a-hole we all know him to be. Good luck Mo. Sell that sh*t someplace else. We've heard it all before.

STFU.  Lazy turd.  So now you are going to play hard?  GFY.

3-1 odds that Wilk still takes plays off and still will rarely give his full effort. He did it at Temple, did it from day 1 on the Jets and, after a couple of months of "pretend", will do it in Green Bay.

Prediction: His 1-year deal in Green Bay will be just that.  No extension, UFA after 2018.
