Maccagnan's Final Public Utterances Before D-Day

Jets general manager Mike Maccagnan on Monday held his final press conference before Thursday's 2018 NFL Draft, in which the Jets pick third overall and could take quarterbacks Sam Darnold, Josh Rosen, Baker Mayfield, or Josh Allen. Here are some takeaways from what Maccagnan said.

PRESSURE AT NO. 3?
There is, of course, a lot of pressure that comes with taking a quarterback third overall, which is surely what the Jets will do. But Maccagnan said he tries to "put that to the side" and make his decision "in a vacuum," while not thinking about the massive implications of getting a potential franchise quarterback at No. 3.

RUNNING BACK IN ROUND 3?
The most concrete thing Maccagnan said was hinting that the Jets could take a running back in the third round (72nd overall), with their next pick after the quarterback at No. 3 (or higher). Maccagnan volunteered that this is a good year for running backs, and left open the possibility that the Jets could get one in Round 3. The Jets made a modest commitment to Isaiah Crowell in free agency. Bilal Powell is entering the final year of his contract. Keep an eye on a guy like Rashaad Penny for the Jets in Round 3.

QB RANKINGS DONE?
Maccagnan indicated that, yes, the top end of the Jets' draft board is complete. But he said that, in his mind, he didn't want to truly set his quarterback pecking order in stone until after the Jets hosted their final quarterback prospect, Sam Darnold, on a pre-draft visit. Only then, Maccagnan said, could he really "put it to bed," with that pecking order. "I think we have a pretty good feel of how we see them," Maccagnan said. "You have an order, so of course, you like your order."

ANOTHER TRADE?
Maccagnan played things close to the vest in terms of whether the Jets could trade up to No. 2, in a deal with the Giants, in order to secure the right quarterback (Sam Darnold?). Maccagnan also mentioned he is open to acquiring more picks in this draft, rather than giving up picks to move up. The Jets have just five picks after No. 3. Ideally, they would have more picks than just six this year.

FUTURE HALL OF FAMER AT NO. 3?
Giants general manager Dave Gettleman — check out our music video about him above — has said that when you pick second or third in the draft, you need to envision that player eventually becoming a Hall of Famer. Maccagnan agreed. "Every team in the NFL probably feels that way," Maccagnan said, as he (not surprisingly) spoke in less bombastic terms than Gettleman did.

CHRISTOPHER JOHNSON'S INVOLVEMENT
Christopher Johnson is the Jets' acting owner, because his older brother, Woody, is currently serving as the United States' ambassador to the United Kingdom. Maccagnan said he speaks only with Christopher, and not Woody, about pre-draft stuff ... and that Christopher participated in the quarterback pre-draft visits at the Jets' facility. Christopher had previously mentioned he would do this.

DRAFT BOARD SET?
While the top end of the Jets' draft board is set, Maccagnan said his talent evaluators are still tweaking the back end of the board. The Jets have one pick each in Rounds 4-7, when will be selected on Saturday, the draft's final day. The Jets could get some valuable depth there, so they want to make sure they have their draft board set just right. But the top end is done.

PETTY, HACKENBERG FATES
Once the Jets draft a quarterback on Thursday, they're going to have five quarterbacks on their roster. Josh McCown, Teddy Bridgewater, and the draft pick aren't going anywhere. Bryce Petty and/or Christian Hackenberg could be cut, though. Maccagnan declined to speculate on their future. Bottom line: Don't expect either guy to be with the Jets come Week 1 in 2018, or maybe even come the start of training camp.

Jets GM Mike Maccagnan was more tight lipped than usual today in his pre-draft session with reporters. He wouldn't confirm the obvious (they will draft a quarterback) and he wouldn't give any details on how they evaluate the quarterbacks. He wouldn't even comment on the importance of hand size when evaluating quarterbacks, saying it could tip their ... well, hand. Chances are, it'll be a Baker Mayfield-Josh Rosen decision. Some key people in the organization prefer Mayfield, but Rosen has some support as well.

Why wouldn’t he take a safety?  The Jets have more depth at RB than they do at safety.  After last year’s bonus babies, there is not a lot.

But that being said, the OL and EDGE are just sad.

I understand going BAP at any position but there are certain players that might be there that I can’t imagine letting slip by.

Ragnow

Okoronkwo

Franklin

are must haves if they’re there.

I was hoping Mac would take Elflein if he was there in the third round, but he traded the pick and later took Stewart, passing over Kareem Hunt.  I think we ended up with Leggett with the pick he got in the trade.

I then thought that Mac must know what he was doing, and that Wes Johnson was up for a big season.

We ended up with the worst center play in the league and a WR that not only did not play much last year, but was outplayed by the fourth round pick and could easily get cut this year.

It is questionable that Mac knows what he is doing.
