Why do all Mock Drafts Have the Jets taking Mayfield?

If Rosen is a strong possibility, then why do just about all the Mock Drafts have the Jets selecting Mayfield?  Are the analysts wrong?

I'd be surprised if it's Mayfield. The Jets have been way too obvious about wanting Mayfield. I bet it's Rosen, and I'm not thrilled about that. But it's not Allen, so that's good.

It is a common tactic to publicly release false information on who you are going to draft.  Has to seem legit to be believed.  Not saying we don't take Mayfield, but I doubt that he is the #1 choice.  If teams believe we are taking Mayfield, they are less likely to move up to #2 to take the guy they want.  It could also push the Browns to wait until #4 to get their guy.

My guess is their board is this...

1) Darnold

2) Rosen

3) Mayfield

I don't like it at all - I would have it quite different but my guess is this is what they have right now.

I'm thinking it's Rosen. He's the best plug and play QB of the group. I'm hoping that all this Mayfield talk by the Jets was all just a smoke screen. I'd hate to think they were stupid enough to announce to the world their intentions a month ahead of time.

They know that they could end up with Mayfield, but I agree with FJ that their board is exactly that.  It only has to be 3 deep.  

We have more, but not necessarily all, color later, but my guess is that the Jets got comfortable with Mayfield but loved the other 2.  So, with the 2 wild card teams ahead of them, there is a good chance they get one of the top 2, but if they don't, they get 3, who is the guy they "loved" the entire time.   They can pick Mayfield and strut onto the podium victorious, saying he was their guy all along.  

GMs are obsessed with upside.  Mayfield's size and lack of elite athleticism will limit him in the NFL.  But he is a very good QB, better than who they have assuming Teddy is not healthy, and the best they will get likely in awhile.  From what I have seen, I would rather have Mayfield for 3 pick money than Cousins for Vikings money.

But my off topic question really is:  If the Jets knew they were going to get a QB and had all that cap space, why didn't they sign Nate Solder to block for him, particularly if they get Rosen?  And sign Richburg?  That was stupid.  Yes, they did not have the Qb yet, but he was definitely coming.

IMO the only way the Jets pick Mayfield is if Darnold and Rosen are off the board.

As for your question - I think with Mac,  he has a price he's willing to pay - once that price gets past he walks away.  He hasn't given out a whole lot of bad contracts, especially long term ones.

There are still June cuts to come - and we have a lot of money left....I do really hope we go offense the rest of this draft.  Defense will be fine, get our shiny new toy protection and some weapons.

It's funny. I don't mind Mayfield at all, and only Rosen would be a better fit IMO. But I'll lose respect for Mac being a TERRIBLE poker player if Baker is indeed the pick.

All the mocks today have Mayfield going 1, Barkley 2, and Darnold to the Jets. Lets hope this plays out and Buffalo wastes their picks to trade up for Allen, a QB who cant hit the ocean from the beach.

How about giving Macc credit for “calling his shot”? If the Jets told everyone they wanted Mayfield, then traded up to #3 a full month before the Draft and got him that’s pretty amazing.

True. I suppose some credit would be due for that. I would still cringe a little for being that transparent though. End will justify the means though if he gets Baker. I just hope he doesn't pass over Rosen to get him

Gotta respectfully disagree. The whole draft process should be built around secrecy . I'd be pissed if he moved to 3rd to take Mayfield and did. But as I've said in the past no matter who Macc takes he can always say " we got the man we moved up to get" . Who the hell would know otherwise ?

UNLESS Macc WANTS people to think he's transparent. Then in 2025 he tells everyone he's taking Bellows at QB when in reality that will be a smokescreen and his REAL intent is to draft Virginia QB Williamson in the 1st round.

Mainly because everything points to the Jets picking him and has for a wile. There has only been rumors late to try and prevent being jumped for Mayfield. Early reports suggested their board was Darnold Mayfield Rosen with the thought Darnold was going first. I believe that. The Jets will select Mayfield if Darnold is gone, Darnold (but maybe still Mayfield) if he is there, and Rosen if both gone.

Very good question - I was hoping they would do that. I'm much more pumped having our own Qb and never wanted Cousins. They should have planned ahead a bit better. It's not like Cousins is Michael Vick - maybe Solder wouldn't come to the Jets.
