Is Bates The Right Coach?

New York Mick

Recommended Posts

This has been the main decision with my friends about the pick. Darnold biggest knock is the high turnovers (22 ints and 21 fumbles) which experts believe can be coached out but are Bowels and Bates the right ones to do it?

Will Bates coach Darnold up and become the new HC replacing Bowels or does he need to be replaced for a better option?

I didn't realize Bates was this rising star in league - the ESPN and Fox peeps were both raving about him, esp David Shaw.

Yeah he seems to be very well-respected.

That makes me feel better. I didn’t know much about Bates outside of Cutler throwing a ton of ints under his coaching.

Maybe the future HC of the Jets.

He's the HC we deserve, but not he HC we need right now.  :) Soon, though...

He didn’t do anything for Cutlers turnovers.

True but cutler has always thrown INTs I can’t really fault a coach for a QB throwing and INT who knows what the player was thinking/doing when they threw them. I think int’s are on the player more so than his coach, always can be an exception. We will find out, and hopefully soon.

Certainly not going to happen at this point, I would be stunned if it does. So now pretty much no matter what, our young QB prospect will be assured 2 OC's and 2 systems in first 2 years. Not exactly the way to develop a QB.

If not they are both gone very soon.

The FO can’t be that ******* stupid.

The FO is comprised of a GM and a HC who both are on equal ranking reporting to the owner. Even if the GM is smart enough, which is suspect, the HC is not IMO.

Woody has to see that Bowels is a problem. Do we need to take out a ******* billboard?

I'm more worried about Todd Bowles' incompetence. Here's a brilliant quote from Him last night on whether Darnold will play next season:

"We're not going to throw him out there, but at the same time, we're not going to hold him back, either."

wow. What an insightful quote. Thanks for clarifying, Todd

I can only go off his Job so far here. Josh McCown is who I figure the QB coach is this year. Bates couldn't coach Hackenburg to a single NFL snap in a lost year and Petty didn't improve at all. I'll grant I have no idea if Bates sucks or he's just been given hot garbage to work with. I guess we'll see

If you take it at face value, i agree with him. If Darnold is not ready, let him sit and learn first half of the year and let him go second half. If he comes in and is the best QB, you play him day 1. What Todd really means is McCown is my guy, and if we are 3-12, I MAY give Darnold the 4th Quarter in the last game if we are already down by 40.

In all fairness Bill Walsh wouldn’t of been able to couch up Hack, it was a stupid pick.

Wonder if part of Bates getting the OC job is some promise about becoming the HC after another year of this idiot Bowles making a mess. And same with McCown; his contract prices makes no sense otherwise.

Biggest laugh of the night was Sal Palantonio telling us how Bowles was so excited  about his new QB, since Bowles doesn't know how a good offense works nor how to stop one.

Gotta disagree. Like it or not McCown IS a starting NFL QB. His salary is easily in line with that.
