Deontay Burnett-WR: USC (Possible Draft Pick)

So im going over Sam Darnold's tape again and the one guy that keeps popping off of the tape in damn near every game is Deontay Burnett. Im figuring since we've drafted Darnold we might as well consider picking up the guy who was his go-to-guy.

Burnett put up over 1,100 yards and 9 TD's this past season. He's a very good WR with consistent hands and has the ability to pull in diving catches. Most importantly was this I found after watching Sam Darnold vs. Texas. I went to Burnett's draft profile and in one of the his strengths it stats "Active scrambler who works well with Darnold to uncover in improv situations", which is so damn true.

Check out this play and then check the replay after the play is completed by Burnett. Matter of fact, from the 7:45 mark where I start the video, just watch it to the end and see how Sam relies on Burnett in that offense. He and Darnold have a very unique QB/WR relationship, and Burnett is only projected to be a 5th or 6th round pick.

It's as if Deontay Burnett comes up with either a big game or a big play in a game, damn near every game I've turned on. Burnett didn't get much playing time as a freshman, he began getting playing time as a sophomore. What was his breakout game you ask? The infamous USC/Penn St. Rosebowl. Everyone remembers this game as putting Sam Darnold on the map, yet it was Burnett who had his breakout game in what was his first "big stage game" catching 13 passes for 164 yards and 3 TD's. Dude completely traveled under the radar given the attention Darnold was getting. This 2017 season every game I put on this kid is either having a big game or a big moment in a game. Matter of fact. Deotay's first game with double digit catches was in the Rose Bowl with 13, his 2nd game with double digit catches was in the Cotton Bowl with 12 catches for 139 yards. This shows that he consistently shows up in big games for Sam Darnold. This kid is a reliable target and he shows up with the lights are the brightest.

Maybe we can provide some Oline depth in the 3rd round and pick up Burnett in the 4th round. Put him in the slot, have Leggett as our TE with Anderson and Pryor on the outside with Enunwa being our chess piece.

Here's a highlight clip of Burnett, but honestly to better understand his significance it's better to watch Sam Darnold's tape and watch Burnett that way. I hope Macc is considering this kid.

I brought him up during the season when I was watching USC for Darnold. Burnett was his guy all day. Burnett is a potential 5th-6th rounder..I’d get em’ if the situation was right. We just have sooooo many WR’s.

I want Ronald Jones, his old RB, he can ball.

1

If he's hanging around past pick 60, Mac needs to figure out a way to get Jones. Exactly the kind of playmaking back we need.

I was watching Ronald and the other RB, #7 as well. They would be good additions but I wonder if Elijah Mcguire can fill that role. I know we have alot of WR's currently (I think we have like 17) but most will be cut and some of these guys still need to prove themselves. I dont think he'll be on the board in the 5th round. I wouldn't mind taking him in the 4th because I think that would still be great value in regards to what he would mean to this offense in the future. We need some Oline help though and I really hope that they address that in the 3rd round since we have no more 2nd round picks for the next 2 drafts.

We have quantity not quality, we still need a #1 WR.

Exactly. we literally have 17 WR's right now. I can tell you that the only WR's that I know are good in Jets uniforms are Anderson and Enunwa. The other 15 WR's need to earn it.

EDIT: and Kearse. That means 14 WR's need to continue to earn it.

Okay I can dig that point but Burnett is 6’0 and 170 pounds. Idk if he has the outside size to be a potential #1 WR...

He measured 6’0, 186 at the combine, and was 177 at his pro day. Also, he claimed to be at 80% when he ran a 4.7 forty (how you can quantify that, idk).

My eyeballs say he’s rail thin, quicker than fast, and not an upgrade over Robby Anderson...who’s all that AND fast.

I wouldn’t draft him before the 6th round, but I like the idea that our shiny new QB can attract UDFAs when they go undrafted (which might be the case for Burnett).

I wouldn’t either. Hell, Anderson is 6’3 nearly 6’4. That’s a big difference in muscling out those 50/50 balls.

In the 3rd round I would rather have his teammates:

Ronald Jones (RB)

Rasheem Green (DE)

Uchenna Nwosu (OLB)

Nwosu is one of the best OLB in this draft. He caused havoc on every QB he played against this season. Whoever selects Nwosu is gonna get a beast of a player.

They call him a one hit wonder. Is he? They say his senior year was the only great season he had.

Absolutely not. Whoever says Nwosu is a one hit wonder obviously doesn’t watch Trojan games. Nwosu single handily won a few games by himself for USC on defense. That kid is special very very special. He reminds me of Brian Cushing off the snap.

You said we needed a #1 in a thread about  possibly taking Burnett so I fairly assumed you were implying we fill that void with Burnett.

Nope I liked the thought of Burnett because of his familiarity with Darnold, but never said he could be our #1 WR.

Watching some game film today and he reminds me a little of Robby Anderson. I haven't studied this guy but they look similar in the games I've watched.

Yeah, agree, but Anderson is a lot faster.

the entire NFL actually really fears Anderson’s straight line speed. It’s insane.
