Overview

Tremendously explosive change-of-pace runner who will need to live in the cafeteria and the weight room early on to help build his frame up to NFL standards. Cannon has juice for days and that big-play ability in space will be very appealing to teams as a likely undrafted free agent. Cannon can catch it and has a history of handling kick return duties when needed so that may be enough to help him find a practice squad this season.

Strengths
  • Explosive athlete with breakaway potential. Posted 38.5-inch vertical leap and 10-foot-9 broad jump. Ran 4.40-second 40-yard dash with electrifying 1.49 10-yard split. Gets to top gear immediately to pull away from defenders when racing around the corner. Loose hips with lateral agility to make sharp, late cuts to avoid tacklers who are on top of him. Homerun ability with 35 rushing touchdowns over the last two seasons. Offers special teams potential with three kick returns for touchdowns during career
Weaknesses
  • Smallish back at just 185 pounds. Lacks frame for anything more than a change-of-pace role. Unable to push through contact to break tackles and add to his yardage after contact. Will get too far along into the run and ends up limiting his backside options

Pre-Draft Analysis

Cannon has the burst to turn the corner, the lateral quickness to make defenders miss and the second gear to pull away when he gets a seam. He's a decisive between-the-tackles runner with the balance to break initial contact. He's a threat after the catch and returned two kickoffs for touchdowns last year. He eased concerns about playing at the Division II level with an excellent pro day workout highlighted by a 4.4-second 40, 38.5-inch vertical and 10-foot, 9-inch broad jump.

Where is @Untouchable , our resident VaTech expert?

This kids from Virginia State

I’ve honestly never heard of him. But reading up on him he seems like he has the speed and shiftiness to make for an explosive return man.

I guess they’ll probably have a 3 way competition between him, Roberts and Whitehead.

Tyreek Hill and Adam Theilen did pretty well.

There are exceptions to every rule but even then both of yours don't apply. Theilen, maybe.

Theilen was blessed with being 6'2" tall. I saw a lot of not so talented kids get rides to college D1 programs based on one factor, "you can't teach a kid to be tall/big".

Hill doesn't count. He played big time ball at Oklahoma State and produced there. He only went a different route after getting booted out for putting his hands on females.

d2 does not translate to the league very well unless you were d2 stud like Woodhead. Even then its tough sledding.

I don't think anybody thinks he's going to rush for 1,200 yards this year, but it's very possible, maybe even probable, he'll be a major upgrade in the Jets' return game which sucks.  He looks like he could be a real ankle breaker with a burst in the open field.

He certainly won't be an every down RB, but if things go well, he looks like he could be a real nightmare for a slow footed LB'er on a wheel route.

Good pick for the Jets last pick in the draft.  Probably will contribute
