Gretzky's grandmother dies at 84

January 9, 2006

BRANTFORD, Ontario (AP) -- Wayne Gretzky is mourning the death of his grandmother, three weeks after the hockey great's mother died.

Betty Hockin, the grandmother of the Phoenix Coyotes' coach, died Saturday at 84 in a hospital in Brantford after being stricken with a heart attack last month.

The funeral home, the Beckett-Glaves Family Center in Brantford, listed her death on its Web site Monday.

Hockin entered the hospital one day before daughter Phyllis Gretzky was admitted for deteriorating health from lung cancer. Hockin was released from the hospital to attend her daughter's funeral Dec. 22.

Wayne Gretzky took a 10-day leave of absence from the Coyotes to be with his mother, who died of lung cancer Dec. 19 in Brantford.

"It's a sad day, a sad week, a sad month for the family," Wayne Gretzky told the Ottawa Citizen on Monday night following a team practice in Ottawa. "I'm going to go home after the game to Brantford I had to get my dad (Walter) out of a hockey game in Edmonton on Saturday night and let him know."

Hockin, who had 21 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren, is survived by sister Eileen Lockley and sisters-in-law Clara Cook and Elaine Van Bradt.

The funeral is scheduled for Wednesday in Brantford.

Maxman:

We recently got rid of one sh*tty poster in this forum. Don't post here. Thank you advance.

I, singlehandedly, carry the hockey forum. I am the star attraction.

*ahem* Hi darlin... singlehandedly? There is a LITTLE bit of help, no?

And, man... when it rains, it pours. My condolences go out to Wayne and his family. RIP

Sorry, my love (but we've got to keep Max out of here). There are a handful of us who keeps the hockey forum going. You are irreplaceable! You know that.

p.s.: Your Wings sucked wind last night.

It's all good, sweetheart. We do need to keep the rif raf out. I do agree with that. And we do a great job of it.

And hey, we're two peas in a pod. If I'm irreplacable, then so are you!

And yeah... my Wings were horrible. They've gotta stop only showing up for the third period.

Good job hijacking a very serious thread.

God Bless your Mom Wayne. May she be at peace now.

Hey... first, lay off my gal. Second... I kept it on topic. Wayne has had a tough time of it, lately. My heart goes out to his family. As everyone's should.
