Five things the Jets should do from here

Here is my remaining wish list:

1. Move Buster Skrine and let one of the young corners have his spot. You traded for Rashard Robinson last year. You drafted two athletic corners last year. You drafted a highly athletic slot corner this year. I get that Buster is a good teammate and all that, but you’re not winning dick this year and a decent slot guy like him would have decent value around the league. Bonus: they’d save six mil against the cap.

2. Trade Darron Lee for Shane Ray and a late round pick. I keep banging this drum, but Ray is eminently available, he’s 24, and Elway just drafted his replacement at #5 in Bradley Chubb. Ray is a freaky talent who’s been nicked up, but he’d fit perfectly here as the edge rusher the team currently doesn’t have. Maccagnan has invested huge in two stout DE’s, but there’s no one at OLB that can help them out. If they want Leonard Williams and Nathan Shepherd to be productive, they’ve gotta do better than bringing stiffs like Lorenzo Maudlin and Jordan Jenkins off the edge. Those dudes essentially block themselves. As for Lee, Maccagnan is about to be in a very embarrassing spot with him because Lee has one year left on his deal after 2018 and he’s not worth the $10 million dollar fifth year option. It’s a win-win for both GMs as both get to erase draft picks that didn’t quite fit.

3. Extend Robbie Anderson. Anderson’s value has to be in the toilet right now, but if he goes out and gets 1,000 yards this season, he’d be in line for a Sammy Watkins-type deal ($16 mil per). Maccagnan has the cap space now to risk a more reasonable investment in an obviously talented young player, more in line with what Allen Hurns got from the Cowboys ($5.5 mil per). If you’re going to nurture a young QB, continuity with some of his weapons will be a big deal. The only receivers currently under contract for next season are ArDarious Stewart, Charone Peake and Chad Hansen.

4. Give Brian Heimerdinger a Howie Roseman-like role in the organization: Heimerdinger was promoted to VP: Personnel in July of last year and the Jets immediately started doing things differently and in a much smarter, more progressive way than they had in Maccagnan’s previous three years here. I don’t believe this is a coincidence. They appear to have gained a new appreciation for analytics, and they just drafted (and traded for) a bunch of dudes who meet a bunch of highly predictive athletic markers that Maccagnan had completely ignored prior. Long story short, Heimerdinger seems to be dragging two cavemen in Maccagnan and Bowles into the 21st century and it would be awful to lose him just when they appear to be turning a corner, And lose him they will: the Raiders are rumored to want him as Gruden’s GM, and the Texans just fired most of their front office.

5. Bring Mark Sanchez in as a training camp advisor: Sanchez is suspended for the first four weeks of the season and nobody is going to sign him anyway. The Jets would be wise to bring him in to work with Sam Darnold on not screwing his life up right off the bat. Darnold is a mellow dudebro from California who’s only 20 years old and he’s about to become one of the most sought-after and exploited figures in New York Sports. While McCown is a fine mentor professionally, Sanchez obviously could provide a unique perspective for Darnold off the field, in terms of avoiding the mistakes he himself made. And the bonus is if Bridgewater shows that he’s healthy in training camp and through the first couple weeks of the season, you’d potentially have the opportunity to trade him and pick Sanchez up on the cheap to be the #3 QB, which would be a major feel-good clickbait story that the media would chase around for a year, allowing Darnold some breathing room.

He is talented on running deep routes if he wasn't getting in trouble every off-season I would be all for resigning him at a reasonable price but the kid is good he isnt great and is not worth the headaches imo

I hear you. I'm hoping this latest crap was a wake up/grow up  call for him. I'd have him on a short leash.

Would love to get Ray. I like 1-4 but 5 should be get Bates ready to be the HC. Have him looking beyond the OC position.

I was a Bowles guy, thought he had potential to grow into a good HC. I was wrong. But he’s a very good coordinator who get drawn thin as a HC. He will go back to being a Dom Capers type puts some goods Defenses together he will get one more shot at a HC fail and have a great career as a DC.

Sure. But there is no reason to move on from Buster today since we already have plenty of cap space and have plenty of cap space to carrover into next  year.

I am all for this. I like Lee and his upside, but Ray's upside is much higher. Not sure we could get a free pick back,  but why not.

I like Anderson also, but there is no way a team will give Anderson a big long term contract coming off repeated off the field issues. Plus Anderson would be a RFA, not a UFA. So they would have some control over him.

I doubt this is  happening but wouldn't bother me either way.  Macc is in control...for now.

You cant move him.  e stinks.  Nobody will want him.  If by move you mean cut then yes.

2. Trade Darron Lee for Shane Ray and a late round pick.

Why would Elway want Darren Lee.  And shane ray is not any good.  You are basically swapping 1st round crap for 1st round crap.  Ill keep or crap.

3. Extend Robbie Anderson.

No way.  He is a loose cannon.  Let him stay healthy again and stay out of trouble for a year.  Then aybe we talk.

4. Give Brian Heimerdinger a Howie Roseman-like role in the organization

Lets see how his moves pan out after a year or 2.  Hes done nothing yet.

5. Bring Mark Sanchez in as a training camp advisor:

THis is a joke so I wont respond to this.

The Robby is a "one trick pony" opinion is so far off the mark... I don't care to argue why.  Hard to imagine how somebody can see him play and think that.  Only going to say you are wrong, advise that you watch closer in 2018...  and leave it at that.

Well done. I don't necessarily agree with all of them, and that is fine. Great stuff here and good thinking.

5. Bring Mark Sanchez

Loved all the suggestions except this 1. Sanchez was a career turnover machine. I wouldn’t want him anywhere near darnold. Since darnold just had a year of high turnovers. It’s one thing if mark had transformed himself from a turnover machine to a qb who threw twice as many tds as ints ( McCown last yr ) Plus I  wouldn’t want to see our qb dress like this either lol

Darnold said Sanchez told him to call him when he’s back on the west coast. Wanted to speak with him privately or something.

I wouldn’t mind it. What not to do, what to expect, etc etc. Nothing that has to do with actual football pretty much.

Lee is going to have a monster year. He's athletic versatile and will be great in the 3-4 as on outside blitzer and for stunts inside. Good coverage backer. You're judging him on two down years by the Jets with overrated DL. To go after a DL and give up on Lee doesn't make sense given the investment the Jets have made in DL.

Wow!!

First..

WHO ARE YOU AND WHAT THE HELL HAVE YOU DONE TO TOMSHANE!!!!

Just kidding this is just a great post!! :)

And I love each and every extremely well thought out idea!!

Even the one idea that many will find fault in out here, which is utilizing mark Sanchez is a great idea!

No doubt Sanchez is a wiser QB and one who would be willing to really help his USC newbie be great!

Wishful thinking, not backs up by any facts. He's undersized and has shown no real ability to get to the QB. And his coverage abilities are average at best.
