What Parcells sees in Sam Darnold, who got his ultimate compliment

April 29, 2018 | 8:08pm

MORE FROM:

BRIAN COSTELLO

One day in early March in Jupiter, Fla., a piece of New York’s football future met with a big piece of New York’s football past.

Sam Darnold, drafted by the Jets last week in the first round, made the trip along with fellow draft prospect Josh Allen, who was taken by the Bills in the first round, for a three-hour session of talking football with Hall of Fame coach Bill Parcells. The former Giants and Jets boss gave them some lessons and came away impressed by both players.

When the Jets took Darnold No. 3 overall Thursday, Parcells texted Todd Bowles, his old assistant coach, and said, “You’ve got a great kid. Help him win.”

Parcells, now 76 and enjoying life away from football, believes the Jets found a quarterback.

“I really think he’s interested in winning,” Parcells told The Post on Sunday. “I say this in a complimentary way, I don’t think he’s ready to be a star, if you know what I mean. Some of these guys come out of the draft and they’re ready to be a star. I think he’s ready to be a football player.”

There is no higher compliment from Parcells than being called a football player. Phil Simms, Lawrence Taylor, Harry Carson, Curtis Martin and Vinny Testaverde were all football players.

Agent Jimmy Sexton arranged the meeting between Parcells, one of his former clients, and the two young quarterbacks, both represented by Sexton’s agency. Parcells said the meeting wasn’t “anything special,” but it was to Darnold and Allen.

“I think the main thing was just, ‘Get back in the huddle,’ ” Darnold said of what he took from the meeting. “That was his phrase that he kept saying. No matter what the score is on Sunday, no matter what happens on Sunday, Monday or Tuesday, just get back in the huddle that next week. There was a lot of things I took away from Coach Parcells. I have like two pages of notes.”

The “get back in the huddle” message is one Parcells has relayed to his quarterbacks for years from Simms to Tony Romo.

“Well, it really stems from you’re not really going to find out about what your capabilities are until you just got beat 31-10 and you threw a couple of interceptions and you were obviously the one that influenced the outcome of the game,” Parcells said. “Maybe your nose is broken. Maybe the fans are booing you. Maybe the press is on your case. Maybe the coaches are looking at you sideways. Maybe the players are wondering a little bit about you.

“Now, it’s Wednesday, you’ve got to get back in the huddle and convince everybody you can lead that team. The essence of the message is no matter what’s going on, your job is to get back in there and lead the team.”

Parcells still watches plenty of football. He laughed when asked if he had seen Darnold’s games at USC.

“You’ve got to be living in a closet not to see him,” Parcells said.

His scouting report?

“He’s a big, strong kid,” Parcells said. “He’s got a good arm. But he’s like everyone. They need work. They need to be refined. They need to perfect their craft. So much of it is getting into the right situation with the right people providing the right environment for his development. It’s not just the head coach. It’s the whole organization. It’s everyone. You’ve got to help him succeed. You’ve got to help him win. That’s what he wants to do.”

Parcells has seen plenty of quarterbacks come into the NFL and try to make it. Some have succeeded and others have failed. He believes the key for any young quarterback is understanding what is expected of him and focusing on it.

“The most important thing is that he and Josh both need to try to understand what the organization wants from him,” Parcells said. “It’s the organization itself, the coaching staff, his position coach, weight coach, everybody and what they want from him and then he needs to do it and not be influenced by ancillary issues that might interfere with that. Until you get established, I think that’s the most important thing you can do.”

Now, Parcells will watch to see if Darnold can help Bowles, who was his secondary coach with the Cowboys, turn around the Jets.

“It’s no finished product,” Parcells said of the Jets. “We’ve got a lot of work to do. I’m going to be following that with great interest.”

If Darnold becomes the franchise quarterback the Jets have been waiting for, their former coach Parcells may have planted a few seeds of his success on that day in Florida.

Great article...Thank you...

In before the crazy Anti-Parcells folks come in.....

Most important part if the article IMO is this here when Parcells says:

"But {Darnold} he’s like everyone.

Note Parcells  says the opposite of the idea that folks have floated out here for years that "either a QB has it or he doesn't"

I just want to bring this to everyone’s attention right quick..........

“There was a lot of things I took away from Coach Parcells. I have like - two pages of notes

THIS^ is what makes QB’s with wild amounts of talent into successful QB’s with wild amounts of talent.

Point blank.

It’s the thoughtfulness , the initiative taken, the want to learn and get better even from the smallest of experiences.

I have zero worries about this guy....zero.

I want to thank the Giants for being stupid and skipping Sam D, for a Running back.

The Big Tuna was never really a QB  HC, but I agree with getting him help.

If Sam can play, he will have the ear of the owner, no more 10 years of Defensive 1# round picks.

Good article. Parcells said more than once “ get him help, help him win.” Bowles probably didn’t want to hear that, he wants all his resources for his D now ha

Bowles must be one of those Idiots who thinks the QB can do it all for an offense. It would be nice to have one elite skill player on offense.

Rawls can be a monster if he can stay healthy, It seems we do have a nice bunch of RB's

He thinks defense can win championships. Literally.

Some of my favorite lines from Parcells in this article:

”I really think he’s interested in winning”.

“Some of these guys come out of the draft and they are ready to be a star. I think he’s ready to be a football player“.

As the writer of the article says, there is no higher compliment from Parcells than being called a football player.

I haven’t been this excited to see a Jets football player in a long time. Can’t wait.

I don't think the two ideas are exclusive of each other. The kid has to be talented and physically gifted. Then the kid has to work his ass off to become more than he already is. Meanwhile the the organization has to handle him correctly. If the kid doesn't have talent it isn't going to just manifest from nowhere. If an organization sucks and the kid is talented but lazy it isn't going to work out.

Darnold wasn't my first choice, but I'm definitely coming around on him. I like the low-key "football player" attitude. I like that he's big, strong, and seemingly durable. I like that he seems to just want to work. His teammates loved him at USC, and everyone says he's a natural leader. He's got the exact correct disposition to help keep the team's chuckleheads on the straight and narrow. A guy like Robby Anderson, say, should be able to recognize what's going to be expected of him if he's going to continue catching passes from our new franchise QB.

“He’s a football player.” “I think he’s interested in winning.”

All of that means nothing. Cliches that indicate nothing and provide zero repeatable and proven methods to identify and progress players. But it sounds cool so let’s pretend it makes our draft pick special.

Think you are going to be pleasantly surprised with Chris Herndon.  IMO he is as good as any TE in this draft.  He is faster then he measured, he had an MCL late in the season and wasn't quite ready to run post season.  He also is a much better blocker then being given credit for.  Won't pancake people, but is very aggressive in space.

He'll probably play H type back, or a slot TE.  He is going to create major mismatches.  IMO if it weren't for the MCL he would have been taken 1st round or early 2nd.  Jets got a steal

I understand Parcells and I think it’s worthless. Parcells was a bad drafter that mortgaged the future of the Jets and Cowboys and Dolphins to look good, and then when he missed his window he left because he couldn’t identify good talent. He never developed a great quarterback and he’s never pointed out traits that actually make a great quarterback.

I like Darnold. To me, he was the third best quarterback in the draft but he’s a natural and his talent/ measurables give him the capacity to be the best in this draft class. But I don’t care about cliche statements that mean nothing and indicate nothing about being a successful QB in the NFL.

Nah. This lovefest over worthless cliches gives me an avenue to express how much lovefests over worthless cliches from coaches are worthless.

Darnold is a super interesting and exciting prospect. Parcells calling him “a football player” is fluff.

fl I'm cool with draft prospects and Im excited after what you just said about Herndon but I'm talking an elite player that can put fear in a defense .... The last time we had that type of player or Players was when we had Chrebet Keyshawn and Martin and before that it was Toon Walker Shuler and McNeil ... When, other than those times, has this team ever even sniffed an elite offense that can take at least some pressure off a Young QB ?

That being said Enunwa can be a threat Rawls if healthy can be a threat both running and receiving and Anderson if he can refrain from being a total jackass can be a good one but none of these guys has really proven to be that elite number 1 type guy not even close ... Like  Julio Antonio Calvin the list is long and we are not on it.

I love that he wrote 2 pages of notes just from a casual meet.

Parcells is right this kid wants to win. When Darnold was drafted he said the Jets can expect to win a lot of games. Mayfield said his expectation was to be the MVP. Rosen complained that teams made mistakes to pass on him. The focus for Darnold is singular and exactly what you want out of your leader. Team vs . Player. Winner vs. Celebrity.

Man I am so tired of the "hero worship" Parcells gets from Jets fans. This guy screwed us six ways to Sunday during his tenure. Piss poor drafting - and passing on Peyton Manning - and then leaving, but not leaving enough to keep Belichick in house. I couldn't care less that Parcells thinks Darnold is a "football player". I already know it.

I agree. He screwed the jets over many ways. So of course many jet fans will have an extreme bias towards him. But I’m glad somebody is trying to get through Bowles thick head. Put your defense in the backseat for once and get darnold the support on O he deserves. If Bowles treats the offense needs anywhere close to the way he has pushed Mac to spend and draft on his D all these past yrs, darnold is going to be a very successful qb.

I cannot stand Todd Bowles and do not think he is anywhere near a good HC, but canning him now would just set Darnold back the way losing Gailey set Petty back. Petty looked like he was making strides in 2016, but regressed badly under Morton. Bowles needs to stay as far away as possible from Darnold and not interfere with his development. I hope Darnold is a "natural talent" and takes this team on his shoulders.

I didn't want him, still don't want him...  but I love what I am hearing about him.  The fact that Parcells thinks that he is more interested in playing the game than being a star is one of the best things you can hear about a person you are banking the future of your franchise on.  I can't wait to be proven wrong about Darnold.

Lol petty was never good. We had a better O weapons in 16. Not much better. The fact that Morton was able to get this offense to perform considerable better in 17 is remarkable. Losing Bowles would not hurt darnold at all. He is not involved much with thd O anyway, other than bully the OC into calling more run plays. Bowles only value is on D, but he has been giving the world on D and it’s nowhere near the D’s we had under Rex.

Thinking darnold willdo it all alone on O without much help is a pipe dream I hope mac/Bowles do not dare think it’s a possibility. That is my worry, they will go back to putting all resources back on D, and leave Sam with A weak O.

Bowles heard him. He just doesn’t know what Parcells means. He’s thinking “oh the kid is about to make much more than me. He doesn’t need any help”. He, of course, has no idea what offense is.
