How the draft would have gone if Jets didn't trade up

1) Browns: Mayfield

2) Giants: Barkley

3) Bills: Josh Allen

4) Browns: Ward

5) Broncos: Chubb

6) Jets: Darnold

Bills would have made the most attractive offer to the Colts as all reports are they were the most aggressive in trying to trade up and had a deal worked out with the Broncos. The fact the Broncos nixed their deal with the Bills bec of Chubb tells me they draft him over Darnold. At most you can say the Jets could have worked out a much cheaper deal with the Browns at 4 to secure Darnold. Gun to my head Darnold would have fell to 6 if the Jets stood pat.

This theory is dependent on a lot of very questionable assumptions, principle among them being that every team would still take the same exact players no matter what else happened, that no other team would trade up, and that a draft day trade with the top QB still on the board would come at a lower price, as opposed to the price being ramped up or even a bidding war breaking out.

Broncos or Bills could have traded with Colts and taken Darnold.  You honestly have no idea if the Bills would have preferred Allen to Darnold. You are just guessing.

There is no way Darnold was making it to 6. Even if the Bills weren't able to trade up to get him, Elway said if Darnold dropped to 5, they would have taken him (Darnold, Barkley, and Chubb were Denver's highest rated prospects overall).

We would have been able to get Rosen though

No way Darnold would have gotten past #5.  Either the Broncos would have picked him or someone trades up in front of the Jets to get him.

Okay, I'll play...

1) Browns: Mayfield

2) Giants: Barkley

3) Bills: Sam Darnold

4) Browns: Ward

5) Broncos: Chubb

6) Jets: Allen

Instead of getting the QB widely considered #1 in this Draft we may have gotten the guy many consider QB4 in this Draft.

I’ve been saying all along Denver wasn’t taking a quarterback they’re happy with Keenum. No idea what the bills would’ve done. Either way we have a potential franchise quarterback so it doesn’t matter

Remember Denver made that move after Jets moved to 3

Ahhh, drafting with the benefit of hindsight is always 20/20.

Except in this case. Darnold would never have fallen to 6. It's a miracle he was there at 3, no way would he have ever been there at 6.

It was a great trade, and we got great QB prospect. Be happy.

No, they wanted a QB but they wanted a specific QB.

yep.  i don't see why either team would.  darnold also has good physical size and throwing ability plus he's more accurate.

No chance in hell. Teams would’ve been offering large sums to move up for Darnold at #3 & 4, and if he still wasn’t gone, the Broncos would’ve taken him at #5. If Darnold turns out to be the sh!t, this deal will go down as one of the Jets greatest trades ever.

If the Jets weren't sitting at 3 it's certainly possible Cleveland goes Barkley at 1.  The Jets def. had Cleveland thinking Mayfield was there top choice.

Giants then might have taken Darnold.

Just no way to know how it played but the likehood of Darnold being there at 6 is very small.

I seen Denver linked mostly to Chubbs.

Yeah I seen a bunch of Chubb connections too but I think Elway really coveted Darnold and Mayfield. When he seen them go 1 and 3 he probably was like screw it..taking BPA here with Chubb.

tbh man..I was almost sure that they would go Rosen. I heard a ton of Rosen love from Denver since the Senior Bowl. Goes to show you how no one really knows anything at all until it’s time to draft.

Couple points:

1. If we did not trade, it is almost guaranteed that someone would have trade to 3

2. If we did not trade, that adds an additional QB slot in the Top 6, and since everyone knows we are taking QB they will trade to 5

3. Smokescreen or not, the Jets love of Mayfield forced Cleveland to take QB at #1

With those variables, if we do not trade AT BEST we draft Rosen and it becomes very possible we got nothing if we stay at 6

So this would have been very possible:

1. Barkley

2. Chubb

3. Allen (Bills)

4. Mayfield

5. Darnold

6. Rosen

Or this:

1. Mayfield

2. Barkley

3. Darnold (Denver)

4. Allen (Bills)

5. Rosen (Arizona)

6. Minkah Fitzpatrick

I just see no way Darnold gets to us at 6. Rosen, yes. Darnold, no.

Yeah, perhaps we could have stayed at 6 and kept the 2nd rounders and have got Rosen. But telling us the winning lottery numbers after the draw has no value.

For weeks and months we were hearing the chance that 4 QBs could go top 5 or even 1-4. Mac and the Jets did the right thing, we staked our claim at 3 an took the chance part out as much as we could. The day 1 draft presser with Mac he said something like there were 3 on their board, so it all makes sense now.

Had Jets not been at #3, Browns likely take Barkley - who knows after that. Giants, Indy, would likely trade out; I would imagine that QB taken at #2, #3, and #4 (or 3 out of the first 5); we would have either had to trade our 2nds to move up to #4 or taken the 4th best QB (best based on other clubs); who knows who we would have gotten.

I can just make stuff up too :-)

Not sure I see the point of this thread. First, I don't think we would have landed Darnold if we didn't trade up. If the Bills traded up with the Colts, it's almost guaranteed they would have picked Darnold.

I'm just going to go back and be happy that we lucked out and drafted the top QB prospect in the draft. This is me being happy

Bills wouldn't be trading up to 3 to draft Allen.  Where did you get that insane idea that they would?

The better question is what would jets have done had giants picked darnold or traded down to a team who would pick him. I honestly believe Mac had no interest in Allen or Rosen. Allen is a train wreck project who has maybe 50% chance of being good. Rosen is a head case spoiled rich brat ( showed that draft night ). I really think it would have been Barkley or Chubb had mac’s Gamble of darnold or mayfield Being there at 3 backfired. Can you imagine that ? Lol
