Maxman
First question; no edge rusher in the draft, are the Jets done in free agency? Macc: We are happy with who we have and who we picked up but it is a work in progress. Free agency starts off with a bang. Realistically we are never done trying to improve this team. Maxman
Anthony: Later rounds, do you look more towards depth or best player available? Macc: My philosophy has always been...lots of risk in the draft, but you try for best available. You look at the depth chart a little bit and factor in need. But it is best player. In regards to late rounds, we try to find the best guy we can get. The fullback from Oklohama wasn't a position of need but we think he is a good player. Dcat
1st question was why no Edge rusher. Standard GM answer: BPA, still people out there (??? maybe he is referring to cuts). Basically, we'll get to that next year (without using those exact words. Kind of shirked the question). 2nd question is about how he makes decisions in later rounds and UDFA. Mixture of BPA/fill needs, all things being equal, they will fit the needs they have in FA

Dcat
somebody please ask him why he's only drafted two OL (both in rd 5) in the last 4 years!!!
Maxman
Xavier: The QB situation, Bridgwewater and McCown - is this a competition thing? What does the immediate future look like for Darnold? If McCown retires can he be a coach? Macc: Obviously we are very high on Sam. He has a high ceiling but he is young. The coaches have a plan for him and how to bring him along. We will throw him in there and see how he does. The coaches will decide on the reps. Todd controls when players play but Todd stresses that every position is up for grabs. We are excited about Teddy and the other positions. Josh as a coach, down the road if he was interested when he is done playing he has a bright future and we would consider it. Maxman
Mitch: A lot of work putting all the pieces together. Explain the rationale in drafting Hackenberg and what is his future prognosis. Has Hack been a disappointment? You are doing a great job. Macc: If you take any player, regardless of postion, you see potential. Guys develop at different paces, we are excited about his offseason and seeing what he can do. It is up to each player to see how they perform. We will have a competitive QB Room and we will see how he plays out. He is young and has a lot of ability. That's where we are at with him. Dcat
TE question now. Leggett and Herndon. What's the plan here? Talking about leggett's injury in pre season. They still really like him. Coaches were very high on him in camp and pre season before he got hurt. Herndon had MCL late in season which Mac thinks caused him to fall and he was "a pretty good value" in rd 4. no mention of Hodges, Walford ($900,000 guaranteed to Walford), Tomlinson or Sterling. Said they would be willing to pick up a veteran when other teams' cuts come in. p.s. Gates is about to be cut from San Diego and still wants to play. hmmmmm
Maxman
Robert: Our prayers were answered with the QB pick. Want to talk about the QB position. The kid last year was hurt and the pick at TE this year had an injury in college. What are the plans at tight end? Macc: Jordan was healthy out of college, got hurt in the last preseason game. That's unfortunate. Was a wide receiver that moved to tight end and was working on his blocking. He is recovering well and it is unfortunate he got hurt. Regarding Herndon he had a slightly different injury, MCL, which might have caused him to slide in the draft. We think he is an effective blocker and a good receiver. We felt at that spot he was good from risk\reward. Our doctors \ trainers feel good about his recovery and we think he will be good to go in a few weeks. Athletic tight end who is a good blocker and can stretch the field. We might add a veteran but feel good about the young tight ends that we have. Maxman
I typed out the question answer on 6th round picks but it got deleted. Basically he said you trade back late in the draft to get more value when you look for role players and backups. Fan: Build through the draft is still the plan? Macc: Try to build something to be sustainable. Lot of pressure to win, everyone in the league feels that. But you have to have discipline and patience to build through the draft. Easier said than done, but chemistry of the players is important. We feel good about the draft and landing Sam. At one point we were in a position with the best cap space before we picked up Leo's option. That gives us the ability to build this going forward. The draft gives you a young core of players, eventually you have to pay them. Tough decisions when you lose players but it gives you a core. Not easy to do but it is what we are trying to do. We want a good foundation and long term success, we feel good about it especially with getting Sam in the draft.

Maxman
Charlie: The offensive line, tweaks, adding anybody? Haven't heard much about that. Macc: When we came in there were good players at the end of their career, Mangold and Ferguson. So it was a transition but my philosophy is to build the oline through the draft. But you can't force picks. We feel good about Long, Winters is coming back from injuries we are looking forward to seeing him bounce back. Carp had a good year two years ago, we want him to bounce back from last year. Brandon Shell is good, has to improve his consistency. Kelvin Beachum was coming back from an injury. He does some very good things from us in the passing game. We aren't were we want to ideally be but we have pieces in place, and we will build this year if something presents itself and next year in the draft and we have a lot of cap space for free agency next year. Maxman
Duane: Was there a lot of demand for the Jets to move down from the # 3 pick? Macc: One of the reporters asked me that. Macc joked that teams shunned the Jets because they moved up so early. Macc: My logic was trading up a day or two before the draft, you pay more. We paid a price, but we kept all of 1st round picks and got a player at the top of our board. When we made the pick I got a lot of calls from GMs saying that was good trading up early. But when we made the trade, we didn't get a lot of calls for the 3rd pick. We didn't know what the Giants were going to do but it is a tough decision to move out of that pick. We were well positioned to see what fell to us. We did a lot of work on the guys and felt the 3rd spot was well positioned to add a player to help us. That is how it worked out. We thought Sam was a possibility but not likely. We put a lot of thought into it, it wasn't random.
Dcat
"By paying higher than market value to move up to Colts spot, the Jets made it much harder for anyone else to move up ahead of us". So anyone else would have been their second/third choice. It was surely Darnold, IMO.
