Agent: Patriots considered trading up to draft Baker Mayfield

2:04 PM ET
Baker Mayfield's agent says the New England Patriots indicated to him they were considering trading up to the No. 2 overall pick in the NFL draft if the Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback out of Oklahoma was available.

Mayfield's agent, Jack Mills, made his comments on "The Business of Sports with Andrew Brandt" podcast.

Mayfield ended up being picked No. 1 overall by the Cleveland Browns, but Mills said the Patriots were interested enough in his client to swing a blockbuster trade if Mayfield fell one spot. Mills said the Browns kept their interest in Mayfield quiet right up to the draft and that the New York Jets indicated that they planned to pick him if he was available at No. 3.

"When he visited the Jets, they pretty much said you're our guy if you're there," Mills said.

Asked if on the day of the draft whether he was expecting the Jets to select Mayfield, Mills said: "We knew that was the bottom line.

"We had another team which is going to surprise you. Another team had said, 'You may get a big surprise on draft day, at No. 2, if he's available.' And it was the Patriots," Mills said. "They had 23 and they had 31 and they had two seconds. We thought, 'That's gonna be a heck of a move, to get up that high from where they are.' And of course he wasn't available so we never knew if that was a reality or not."

After selecting running back Saquon Barkley at No. 2, New York Giants general manager Dave Gettleman said he had no interest in trading out of the pick. However, he said Monday on WFAN's "The Afternoon Drive with Carlin, Maggie & Bart" that he did receive "one very reasonable offer" for the pick but wouldn't go into details.

The Jets selected quarterback Sam Darnold at No. 3 overall with Mayfield off the board.

The Patriots, who traded backup quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo to the San Francisco 49ers last season, had been thought to be in the market to draft Tom Brady's eventual successor this year but waited until the seventh round before picking a quarterback, selecting Danny Etling.

Brady, who will be 41 when the 2018 season starts, confirmed Monday that he will play this season and reiterated that he hopes to play into his mid-40s.

What the hell could New England have given the Giants to make them want to drop back all the way to #23?

This reeks of agent bullsh*t.

The agent also claims that the Jets promised him that he was the pick at #3 if he was still on the board.

Maybe, but it all sounds like typical agent bullfeces.  Doesn't matter anymore anyway.

Of course this is Bakers agent talking because so many Browns fans are pissed they selected him. So now the agent has to say all these other teams wanted him.

Picks 23 & 31 in round 1 and they also had picks 43 & 31 in round 2.

Draft chart points:

Giants pick 2: 2600

Pats pick 23:    760

Pats pick 31:    600

Pats pick 43:    470

Pats pick 63:    276

Not enough there.  Almost 500 points short.  Would have needed next year's 1st round as well.

Bullcrap.  They would have just kept Garoppolo.  All they got for him was a 2nd.

Hmmm I believe that the Jets were going to get Mayfield at 3 based upon their carefully canned responses on Darnold.

well then let's give our thanks to the existence of the Cleveland Browns.  Forever grateful.  :)

So the Pats gave away Garappolo for a mere second round pick last season, but were contemplating giving away half their draft and a 1 next year for Mayfield??  Lol....good work by Bakers agent spinning that one.

Well supposedly Belichick wanted to trade Brady and move to Garopolo last year and drunkasss vetoed him. That would have sucked for Jets fans because Garopolo certainly seems like a future franchise guy.

Agreed but ONLY if Darnold went #1 like everyone thought.

Doubtful.  Especially since this is coming from the midgets agent.

Yup I call TOTAL BS on this. New England might have been jerking Mayfields chain just to talk to him. No way in hell Beliprick was going to give up THAT much ammo to move to #2.

Just like NE REALLY liked Lamar Jackson ! So much in fact that they passed on him TWICE in the 1st round. lol

I buy this even less

Even the Browns had Darnold at the top of their board but were reportedly wooed over by Mayfield’s personality and “moxie” at the last minute. Talk about a bunch of inept assh0les.

Darnold was widely regarded as the top QB in this draft going back to at least the 2017 Rose Bowl.

Only the Browns could f*ck this up.

Darnold’s pro-day totally cemented him as the top QB in the draft and the #1 overall pick in most people’s eyes. The Browns had the easiest pick in the world to make and they still managed to fumble it.

Hooray for us

So this report means we wanted Mayfield and only took Darnold because Mayfield was gone.

SAR I

I'm sure Mayfield and his agent would love for the irate Browns fans to believe that one.  LOL.

Eh, I'm sure every team "considered" a lot of things. What matters is that, even if they did "consider" trading all the way up to #2 (Would have had to give up a king's ransom - Even if the Giants wanted to trade the pick, I can't imagine them agreeing to drop all the way down to #23), they eventually decided to do no such thing

I had Mayfield as my top pick with Darnold close behind.

I'm good with the way it fell, Mayfield to the Browns and Darnold to the Jets.  If the Pats had come up and gotten Mayfield it would have been to much.

I believe the Pats tried to come up, just don't think the Giants were trading down that far.

Sounds cute, but how was it going to happen?  NE didn't have enough draft pick "points"

to jump all the way to #2.  Just another story for a reporter to generate buzz for their

twitter feed

I think Mayfield will be great. But I think Darnolds upside is higher and floor is higher as well.

But heres the thing. Pro days are somewhat useless for the most part. However Darnold's was in RAIN, and he was close to perfect. I thought he was definitely the #1 pick at that point.

I'm 50/50 on this.  I do believe Mayfield would be the pick for sure if Darnold was gone, but if both were available I'm honestly not sure.

Me too.  Watched it live on NFLN.  Throwing wet balls in the rain did a lot to shake any concern of a cushy California kid who can only play in 70-degree sunshine.  There were some funny comments by Mayock and the guys that day as well if I remember correctly.  One guy said something like, "It's pouring rain, look at all the GMs and scouts heading back to their cars in the parking lot.  The only ones sticking around are the ones you now know truly want to draft a quarterback." lol

And then they did it yet AGAIN by taking a CB (Ward) over THE edge rusher Chubb.
