Petty > Hack

First we don't know if Bridgewater can stand or move at all yet.  Also, these guys have watched Petty and Hack in practice a helluva lot more than we have (more than the zero times than I have, in any event).  And there is at least an infintisemal chance that Hack is better than the horrible that we have all convinced ourselves that he is.

They will most likely let Hack battle it out with Bridgewater for a roster spot.

If Bridgewater is healthy/mobile, I cant believe it will be much of a battle.

I think the Jets try and be considerate of players and that they have an opportunity with other teams.

Petty can now join teams in their OTAs, etc.  He only had a year left.  Hack has 2.  Hack has more upside and plays a style more similar.  Hack is worth a shot.

Both were not great picks.  I think teams learned this lesson.  Even today, the QBs picked in the 4th round look alot better than Petty.

Petty is proven poop

At least there is still a bit of an unknown with Hackenberg.

Wouldn’t shock me at all if Bridgewater still isn’t where he needs to be and Hack makes the team.

Pretty much. Petty proved he wasn't an asset to the team. Hack hasn't even proved that yet, so he could stick until he does.

Unless Bridgewater is fully healthy, Hack could easily stick as the #3 behind Darnold and McCown.

Exactly. Plus Hack is the same age as Baker Mayfield. Let’s see if he can at least become a decent back up QB. Hopefully us drafting Darnold lights a fire under his ass to get his sh*t together.

Anyone know if Hack is PS eligible?

Yes. And I think that plays a huge part into why he'll stay with the time a while longer. The other factors are Teddy's uncertain recovery and the fact that they probably still think they can make something of the 23 year old.

Even if Teddy beat him for a roster spot they can stash him on the squad for a year and re-sign him in the winter- potentially providing a backup player for the next year... if he's worth it.

Yes.

Plus Hack is still practice squad eligible if he finishes fourth.

This true, but if Bridgewater is healthy, he'll more then likely be traded.  IMO that is why the Jets rolled the dice on him.  He's a FA next year, so if he shows he can start again the Jets would lose him.

He definitely is

And that’s where I expect him to end up if Teddy makes the roster.

Thanks, and I agree I think he makes his way to the PS this year. Imagine next year he progresses to be a viable backup QB, Darnold leads the Jets to a 6-3 record but gets injured vs the Pats. Hack comes in and leads the Jets to the playoffs plus a couple playoff wins a la Foles and we have to decide what we are going to do with him?

Would never happen of course, but if it did, it would happen to the Jets!

They’re both bad, but it is inexplicable that Hackenberg is still on the roster.

Mac is too scared to admit he messed up totally taking the worst qb of this generation in the second round

At this point I'd settle for him being an unspectacular third stringer/backup who can hit the broad side of a barn when under no pressure.

I really think his age is a huge reason why they'll give him a chance. Petty is who he is by now, maybe the younger guy can get a second wind? And then there's the fact that they will still need another camp arm in the short term...

Hackenberg is a cheap camp body... he is not getting cut... if Teddy and Darnold show they can play in the NFL Teddy gets traded and Hack becomes 3rd string. If Teddy proves he cannot play he is getting cut. Its simple... Hack is on this team this year.

I'd be shocked if either on the roster if the reports that Teddy is healthy are true.  Which makes not trading Petty bizarre.

I’m pretty sure those Petty trade rumors were a crock of sh*t.

Otherwise they would’ve traded him for a conditional 2019 7th rounder or something.

Petty is garbage and really has hit his ceiling. Hack is garbage as well, but he’s young and deserves a look at least as long as Petty was given to prove his garbageness.
