His deal eclipses Cousins and Garapolo.

30M per and 100M guaranteed. WOW

The Atlanta Falcons have locked in quarterback Matt Ryan with a new contract, according to Chris Mortensen of ESPN.

The deal is reportedly for five years and averages $30 million per year with $100 million guaranteed. Both are NFL records.

The extension isn’t a surprising one. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s Jeff Schultz reported on Mar. 16 that it was on the horizon, and it has arrived.

Ryan’s deal comes after Jimmy Garoppolo and Kirk Cousins got monster deals this offseason. We knew this was coming all along, especially after Ryan’s 2016 MVP season, and Derek Carr’s mega-deal he received in the offseason afterward.....................................................>

Garrapolo kinda accelerated this but it was inevitable

Definitely.  Such a monster contract going to a guy with a grand total of half a season as his entire resume pretty much guaranteed that every proven starter at the position will be hauling in even more absurd contracts than that.  QB contracts continue to get more excessive by the year, but that definitely gave quite a few guys some serious negotiating leverage.

Brady is going to demand 40 million in 19 or he will say he will just retire. He will get it too now that garapolo is gone

Seriously doubt it. If he were to he'd had done it earlier.

Lol. No he was a great team player for most of his career. Or he was likely receiving a duffel bag of millions from “ unknown source “ to undercut the cap. Giving cheatriots track record it’s very likely.

It’s rumored Brady’s divaness came out when he saw his backup get a contract twice as nice as his. He and B.B. are not so close anymore if you haven’t noticed. He will make them pay on his way out.

So Cousins was the highest paid QB for, oh, about 6 weeks.

Rodgers to eclipse Ryan within a month.

And this "record" will last even less. Aaron Rodgers..... $30.2 mil.

I'd love to see him "stick it" to the cheaters.

Gronk and Brady sent a strong message not showing up for vol workouts. I believe that is a first? Brady is pissed B.B. kicked out his trainer. And it’s no secret B.B. wanted to keep jimmy garoppolo and even trade Brady. Watching what that kid did with 9ers without having much time to learn playbook, players, we see why B.B. was pissed to let him go.

Brady will sign a lifetime services contract with the pats a year or two after he retires for some absurd amount. Handshake deal already. The final cheat of the bellichick/Brady era.

Six years ago the top QB contract hit $20m per year, today it's $30m per year - this league is determined to destroy itself, the fallout will continue, more holdouts, more players demanding to be paid like QB's, more desperate teams paying them, owners have no one to blame but themselves

Or maybe this is how they get real parity since the math will not let you build a team with half of the cap spent on 3-5 "stars" who need help - this will force more rookies to start, more players cut/waived after rookie contracts to create more cheap FA's  or (under table money - see pats* cheat)

Overall less talent and shorter careers in the league plus the next CBA will have to include an injury exemption for the cap;

Cap Hell will have new meaning with $100m on IR

NFL should use % of salary cap instead of hard dollars for contracts.

If the salary cap is 300million, then the standard for an elite QB should be say... 10%. If the salary cap goes up.. so does the salary of every player.

The salary cap should be based off a portion of shared revenue generated by all teams. So if the NFL has a down year- everyone feels it and the numbers still make sense at a team level (and if the NFL continues to grow, players will benefit equally as well).

You would rather pay Andrew luck and Watson with their injury histories? Rather pay mahomes 150m when he has such limited tape in nfl games?

I’d rather have those guys than Matt Ryan. Matt Ryan is the embodiment of franchise purgatory.

Its laughable that you would rather have an injured deshaun watson or Mahomes who has a career record of 0-1 but to list David Carr and Jared Goff is absolutely ridiculous.

You do know that Ryan was the NFL MVP and has led his team to a championship game and a SB - which if his coach had any clue what he was doing, they would have won.

But yea, Id rather have Jared Goff

Yep.  It's not like the guy's ever played well enough to win a super bowl, despite having an elite defense

Would you trade Darnold for Matt Ryan right now?

Correct, but we're not talking about talent.  No bucks, no Buck Rogers.

The Atlanta Falcons are worth $2.1 Billion dollars and generated $367 Million dollars in revenue last year.  Ryan will now make 8% of annual revenues and 1.4% of the team valuation.  There are companies who spend 8% of revenues on legal fees and toilet paper, it's not out of line despite what common sense may tell you.

No player is worth $30M until his absence reduces the annual revenue by $100M and the valuation of your team by $500M.  Empty seats, low TV ratings, paltry licensing fees, that's what happens for 30 years when Dan Marino retires and the fans of Miami have beaches and convertibles to enjoy.  And as a point of comparison, Keanu Reeves made $30M in 2003 for making the Matrix sequel and Johnny Depp made $35M for a Pirates Of The Caribbean sequel.  Not saying any of this is right, but from a financial standpoint Matt Ryan and most NFL quarterbacks may actually be underpaid if you look at other comparisons in the entertainment industry.

Had we not won meaningless late season games a decade ago then we could be paying him him $30 mill a year.

Imagine the 2009 and 2010 seasons with Matt Ryan at QB.
