NFL Trades that should happen-Shane Ray to the NY Jets

There's something of a theme with the players on this list. Most are in contract years. Many were first-round picks in 2015—first-rounders who haven't met expectations.

Such is the case with Shane Ray in Denver. Taken 23rd overall in the 2015 draft, Ray has shown some flashes—including a 48-tackle, eight-sack 2016 season. But a series of wrist injuries limited Ray to one sack in eight games last season. With Bradley Chubb now in the fold, GM John Elway and the Broncos passed on paying Ray over $9 million for a fifth year on his rookie deal, per Arnie Stapleton of the Associated Press.

Assuming Chubb is anywhere close to as good as most think, Ray won't sniff the playing time needed for another eight-sack year in the Mile High City. Odds are good this will be his last season with the team.

However, there are other locales where Ray could see significantly more playing time—teams whose depth chart on the edge is much sparser than in Denver.

Teams like the New York Jets.

The Jets are as hard up for pass-rush help as any team in the NFL—a need made all the more pressing by the fact New York didn't address the position in free agency or the 2018 draft.

It's a win for all involved. Denver gets something in return for a player who will be gonesville in a year. The Jets get the help on the edge they so badly need.

And Ray gets the snaps he'll need to (hopefully) add some zeroes to his next contract.

While I would be in favor of this move, a disappointing player on the last year of his rookie contract, with the 5th year option already declined and about to be relegated to backup duty, is not worth anything particularly high in a trade.

Especially if you have no plans to sign him long term.  It's not like the Jets will be competing or anything other than a top 3 pick again.

Next year is the year of the pass rushers/DL. Should we be in the rooting for losses business again this season if Sam isn't in there?

Keep tanking until we have a complete team.

Yeah 12 sacks in 3 years is why he is avaliable, but he's better than what we got so maybe a 5th?

I wouldn't want to be giving up any decent picks next year, given we're already short a 2. A player for player trade would be better - IF we think he's a decent prospect, given the injuries to date.

I think it's worth seeing what it'd take. Hard to know if he was ever 100% last year. 1 sack is pitiful for an edge rusher, even in only 8 games, but then Von Miller only had 2.5 sacks over the same span on the same sorry-ass defense. Maybe he was the cause of Miller's sack levels falling, lol. He had 8 sacks a year before, but I'm not going to pretend I know if they were mostly coverage sacks or what.

I can't see Denver risking him getting injured over the summer (as he's not in their long term plans, and they might end up with nothing). I'm actually surprised they didn't move him quickly after the draft but before the deadline for 5th year option (a trade partner might want 2019 built in; but I suppose others might not, given his recent injury history).

The rationale: this FO sucks at drafting - or at best, they suck at drafting outside the top 6 overall picks - and Ray's not going to warrant a high pick in trade. We also don't have any serious "absolutely must start him" edge rushers ourselves anyhow. If Ray is suddenly playing anywhere near his draft status the team also has gobs of cap room to extend him, and won't be paying big QB $$$$ for at least 3 years. If Ray played well for Denver this year, we would likely be at least looking at this young edge rusher next year in FA anyhow. Might as well get a year tryout for relatively little, plus the inside track on extending him (with FTagging always an option if needed).

Then again who knows -- for all we know Denver is demanding a 2nd rounder. I'm sure everyone knew he was available the second they drafted Chubb, so maybe they're asking too much. He might end up being worth that, mind you, but no way we can pay that today.

Agreed. I'm thinking a fifth rounder at most to go with the one year prove it contract
