“Jets traded to #3 for Mayfield, thought Darnold would be gone”

Per Ian Rapoport.  Video on NFL.com.  Not a huge surprise but confirms the target was Mayfield and not Rosen, Allen.

“They knew Mayfield would be there at 3 because he wasn’t going to go #1 and he wasn’t going to go #2”

”Of course, Darnold was the Jets top-rated QB”

I can buy this. Just the way the Jets rushed to have Sam in the week prior to the draft showed that something changed and they wanted to look at him closer. That supports the thought that they didn't think Sam would be there prior to bringing him in.

Sam Darnold was the target all along the Jets thought they had no chance in drafting him thats why the hype was on Baker Mayfield.

How he could have been the target if the Jets thought they had no chance of drafting him?  Mac has admitted that they were operating under the assumption that Darnold would be gone by the third pick.  So they were obviously targeting another QB.

what he probably meant was theat Sam was atop the Jets draft board, but they were willing to settle for Mayfield or one of the others in the event Cleveland, the Giants or some trade-up team snagged Darnold at picks 1 or 2.  Using the term "target" is confusing.

By the way, Denver did try to trade with the Giants for #2 after Mayfield was selected.  And apparently, the Bills may have as well.  Mac is a lucky son of a bitch.  But it's about time the Jets got a break.

Correct. Why Mac made himself fall in love with mayfield, thinking he never had a shot at the super model. I’m real curious what would have happened if giants took darnold, or traded the pick to someone that would. Maybe Chubb or Barkley is the pick. Why we signed bridgewater just in the very rare case they didn’t get 1 of the 2.

At this point who cares? Darnold is a Jet and that's that. Talk about being late to the party ......

I was convinced it was going to be Browns - Darnold, Giants - Rosen, Jets - (bringing up the distant rear) Mayfield.  I could not be more shocked or more pleased with they way things fell.  Go Jets!

I’ve read Sam declined visits because he thought Browns would take him. Last minute change had him making last minute sales pitches.

Well Bowles opened his big fat mouth and gushed about Mayfield and it was true so we see how smart this guy is? Clue - not very! But Bowles lucked out! He flipping lucked out that we didn't lose them both and got stuck with Rosen. Bowles has got to go. What traits are the Jets keeping Bowles for? He not Rex Ryan is one. That's about it. What is he good at? You got me. I don't have an answer.

Ya they heard browns were interested in baker. Interesting they didn’t rush Allen or Rosen back just in case jets lost on mayfield and darnold.

He's a genius. :P  But seriously, Bowles may have gotten the only organization more dysfunctional than the Jets to believe that we were taking Mayfield.  I'm convinced the Browns wanted to go Saquon Barkley at #1 and Mayfield at #4.  But they had to get Mayfield at #1 because the Jets convinced everyone he wouldn't get past #3.  You essentially had the two organizations with the least success at finding franchise QBs over the past 20 years trying to show each other that they'd both leave Sam Darnold on the board to take Baker Mayfield.

Thank you Cleveland and Giants for saving the Jets from themselves - Mayfield over Rosen would have been a circus...

I texted all my friends who are giants fans a thank you when I heard this "With the 2nd pick in the draft, the New York Giants select Saquon Barkley, running back Penn State"

be interesting to see what would have been pick 2 in that case...think would be Darnold.  They could have had Barkley and one of the top 3 QB.  i would have done that.

i still wonder if staying at 6 and taking rosen would be better overall outcome.  the 2nd round picks would have to work out.  i would have taken 2 OL in the second round.

Everybody knows this already.  Maybe it's some kind of surprise to Rappoport, but this is stale news for any Jets fan with a pulse.

when the trade first happened Rappoport reported the Jets had 2 QBs on their board because the Giants weren't going QB

everyone else on twitter said the Jets liked 3 QBs and that Rapp's tweet was BS, and Jets fans spent the next 6 weeks assuming they'd be taking the 3rd QB at 3.

We traded up to get (in our minds) the 2nd best QB and not get locked out of drafting a QB.

We got the "best" (in our minds) QB instead.  Thanks Browns and Giants.

Is there a problem in any form with that?

Seems like a good thing...

If anyone pulled off this subterfuge, it was Mayfield’s agent, not the Jets. He saw that the Browns were legitimately interested, but read the same clippings the rest of us did suggesting the Browns could take Barkley #1 and “their QB” #4. He then, in turn, “leaked” the Jets interest in Mayfield. The Jets were fine with it, and stayed closed lipped. Dorsey panicked and took Mayfield #1.

The Jets got lucky. Let’s not pretend they’re clever.

We're not sure. We don't have a great deal of experience around here with that sort of thing...

I'm thrilled to be moving forward with Darnold... Actually, the Jets in my life have never been the beneficiary of drafting/signing "the guy" at QB - so this is surreal.

That said, I loved Mayfied and would have been head over heels to hear his name too. Why CLE is getting lambasted for their choice - is insane to me. "Not what i would have done" - i get it, totally. "What a bunch of idiots"... fack off. Lets see where things are in a couple years.

Only time will tell on these guys but I agree.  If I had to guess what would have been the pick at #2 if the Browns went Barkley at #1 I'd say there's a 70% chance it would be Darnold and 30% Chubb.  We'll never know.  But that would likely have landed Mayfield with the Jets if it was Darnold.

As for the 2nd round picks (if we stayed at #6) I think similarly but probably would have gone OL and a TE there.  TE was clearly on the Jets radar as they went with Herndon in Round 4, but there were some really good ones on the board early in Round 2.

It sucked to loose the picks (even with us not having a great track record with seconds), but I can see a scenario where we get left with scraps at QB had we not moved.

If Browns go with Barkley first, the Giants draft Darnold (or trade pick for Darnold), Colts likely trade out for a team wanting a QB, Browns take a QB at #4 leaving 3 QBs gone; with the run on QBs it is likely Denver trades out, and we get the 5th QB; maybe Denver doesn't trade, and we get the 4th. For a QB, it was too risky - I wish we still had those picks, but happy how it turned out...
