Report: Packers to Lose Veteran College Scout Alonzo Dotson to Jets

By Zachary Jacobson on May 08, 2018 with 10 Comments

New Green Bay Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst will have another position to fill on his player personnel staff this summer.

According to Michael Cohen of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, the Packers have lost veteran college scout Alonzo Dotson, who is expected to join the New York Jets' staff under the terms of a possible promotion.

Dotson played college football for the Oklahoma Sooners as a defensive end for four seasons before working as an assistant coach at Madison High School for two years.

Eventually, Dotson would find his way to Green Bay to work under Gutekunst's predecessor, Ted Thompson, as a defensive quality control coach.

He worked with handling administrative duties, working with the defensive line and linebackers and organizing the offensive scout team. Among other duties, Dotson's background -- both as a player and as a coach -- made him an integral part of the personnel staff.

Dotson was officially hired as a college scout in February 2013 by Thompson, serving in that role for five seasons.

Dotson is the nephew of Santana Dotson, who played for the Packers for six seasons and was a critical part of the 1996 championship team, and the grandson of Alphonse Dotson, who was drafted by Green Bay in the second round of the 1965 draft.

Eliot Wolf and Alonzo Highsmith -- two lengthily-tenured executives in the Packers' front office -- also left this offseason to assume high-ranking positions in the Cleveland Browns' football operations.

This was my first thought as well.  With Aaron Rodgers their CS and FO look brilliant.  Without him, they're probably similar to our CS and FO.

One thing to note, by the way, is that Rodgers fell in the draft to them (just like Darnold fell to us although Darnold only fell 2 spots whereas Rodgers fell like 20+ spots).

I though losing that guy we never heard of was the beginning of the end?

Phew.

now they hired a guy we have never heard of, so we are saved, again, Sam can relax now since the pressure is on Alonzo

Actually it looks like Dotson had some ties to Green Bay so interesting that he left, changing of the guard?

The Jets have had good luck with former quality control coaches and working with Ted Thompson for 5 years is a plus - sounds like a good addition

Agree and I wonder if he gets named vp player personnel.

Green Bay's Front Office made an enormous mistake in not changing their philosophy towards free agency once the rookie cap went into affect.  Staying away from high priced free agents was a smart move for the most part once the NFL instituted Free Agency, however once the rookie scale came into play, it changed the landscape of how you build a team.  The rule put so much extra money into the veteran pool that it was irresponsible to continue to not pay free agents, especially when you have a player like aaron rogers and an organization that people want to play for.

Hopefully Dotson took some good things from his experience there and can work well with Hermiendinger and mac.

Smart move, anytime you take someone from a consistently winning organization it’s a good hire.

I don't know about that.

Since 1998 the Green Bay Packers have had Hall Of Fame caliber quarterback play in an incredibly weak division and went to 1 measly Super Bowl.  We know what franchises like the Cowboys, Broncos, 49ers, Steelers, and Patriots accomplished with similar talent at the quarterback position.  You ask me, Green Bay is vastly underachieving.

SAR I

Maybe Rogers fell in the draft because he wore a Fvck Bush cap?

This.  The Patriots are still "the Patriots" because their pro scouting has been light years ahead of every other NFL franchise the past 7 years.  Their amateur drafts over that time frame have been extraordinarily average.

The Pats have routinely been trading draft picks for veteran players because with the limited practice time it takes too long to develop players right now, and its better to get a proven talent who can contribute day 1.

This is why given what Darnold makes, and the fact that we dont have anyone to pay other then Leo, we should be able to continue to sign 1/2 big FA's next offseason, extend Leo and continue to have cap space as guys like Carpenter, Skrine and Clairborne fall off the payroll.  We just need to find replacements behind them.
