True NFL Draft Grades: 2014 Draft, Four Years Later

BTW, here are reasonable alternative picks for the first 3 rounds, based on what was available, our needs at the time, and predraft reports.

1:18 - Branding Cooks, Ha-Ha Clinton-Dix

2:49 - Davante Adams, Cody Latimer, Allen Robinson, Jimmy Garopolo, Jarvis Landry

3:80 - Gabe Jackson, Louis Nix, Trai Turner, Donte Moncrief, Josh Huff

Not reasonable to think we'd hit on all of them, but missing on the first 3 picks in that draft was next to impossible

Remember the good old days when there were many posters who strongly supported Idzik? Hopefully those posters got a taste of humble pie and no longer cram their opinions down everyones throat as though they know more than everyone else....

Pretty poor draft class overall, you'd have to surmise, as there was only 1 A, no A-, and very few B+.  Seems like the modal grade was in the C range.

Huh?  Not sure if you're being serious or not but that draft was loaded and Izdick missed out on some serious talent taking bums who are no longer in the league.

Cleveland took A CB Justin Gilbert and a QB Johnny Manziel in the first round of that draft, they never learn...Lol.

Ironic and they're both very similar players to Ward and Mayfield.

Was just looking at the grades.  Almost no one did well in that regard.

That’s one of the worst drafts in history

If so, 2013 ranks a very close second:

2013 1 Sheldon Richardson 13 DT 2017 0 1 3 43 73           4 4 2       1 19.0 Missouri

There has been so much criticism of Mac because the Jets roster is "bare" but can anyone objectively look at the situation this organization was in after Idzik and realize what hand mac was dealt?

Can you imagine an organization having 2 drafts with 18 picks and all they come away with is Sheldon Richardson, Enunwa, Dakota Dozier and Brian Winters?  How exactly is the next GM supposed to field a semi-competitive team when there are 3 total contributors from 2 draft classes?

Mac isnt perfect, but this roster was a DISASTER when he took over. Its almost impossible to blow as many picks as Idzik did.

He also had a sh*tload of cap space (twice) and a top 6 pick (thrice!).  It doesn't take 4 years to overhaul a roster, so why did we still suck last year?   The drafts sucked, but the guy was handed a clean slate and he finger-painted nonsense on it.  He's been given another chance - let's see what he does.  Darnold seems like a nice start.

I remember just staring blankly at the screen when they made the McDougle pick.  The other thing I'll remember is how that 2014 Draft was so deep at WR and the Jets had a big need at WR.  Then they passed on a ton of guys only to take two of the worst possible ones back-to-back in Rounds 4 and 5.  We left Kelvin Benjamin, Devante Adams, Jordan Matthews and Brandin Cooks on the board to take Pryor.....as well as passing on Derek Carr and Teddy Bridgewater.  We took Jace Amaro and left Allen Robinson and Jarvis Landry on the board.  2014 was literally THE DRAFT for WRs.  We took 3 of them and at least 10-15 different ones turned out to be better than ours.  You think I'm kidding?  Even guys like John Brown (AZ), Martavis Bryant and Donte Moncrief were on the board in Rounds 3 and 4.

A truly hideous draft.

The kicker...... Idzik played WR in college....

The problem may have had more to do with vetting than scouting.  Saunders may have had some serious issues. He left Fresno for Oklahoma and with the Jets he had that strange incident with teh seizure or whatever in his car.  I think he had some medical absence.  He was primarily supposed to be a returner, but fumbled some.  He weighed in the 160s which horrified me.  He was suspended for substance abuse for 4-games and then for 10 games promptly thereafter.  IMO he probably has a serious issue

One of the coaches in Italy had UCLA ties - sp he knew Evans and Richardson and some of the others.  He said Evans big problem would be if he came in like he already made it.  Felt if he was willing to put in the work he'd be a solid pro. He had that shoulder injury and it sounded like the staff though he was faking.

Amaro is the one that hurt.  Most of us wanted Cooks.  Would have been nice to have a guy that would get 1000 yard seasons and then be traded for a first whenever.  When they waited until the 2nd for a pass catcher we figured Amaro had to be a hit.  Long arms, but little hands.  He had a fair rookie season, but then, like Evans he got hurt and the team acted like it was a mystery ailment.  He hasn't really played much since, but the Titans kept him around and he's on the Chiefs 90.  If he were at least serviceable the rest would have been more palatable.

Enunwa was a find in the 6th, but he's been hurt so much it's hardly mattered.

Valid point. Im rethinking my feelings on mac. At the end of this season i will reevaluate him. Not expecting playoffs, just growth moving forward with these new players taken.

It should still be an interesting season

Looking at this list, I think their is a correlation to the state of these teams and how well they drafted 4 years prior. Does a rebuild take too long when the you start with nothing? How can any fan, even with revisionist history defend Idzik in any way.

NEW YORK JETS

Round 1 (18 overall). Calvin Pryor, FS, Louisville
2 (49). Jace Amaro, TE, Texas Tech
3 (80). Dexter McDougle, CB, Maryland
4 (104). Jalen Saunders, WR, Oklahoma
4 (115). Shaq Evans, WR, UCLA
4 (137). Dakota Dozier, T, Furman
5 (154). Jeremiah George, LB, Iowa State
6 (195). Brandon Dixon, DB, Northwest Missouri State
6 (209). Quincy Enunwa, WR, Nebraska
6 (210). IK Enemkpali, DE, Louisiana Tech
6 (213). Tajh Boyd, QB, Clemson
7 (233). Trevor Reilly, LB, Utah

If you’re a “quantity over quality” believer, feast your eyes on this: twelve picks, one starter (Quincy Enunwa, the eighth pick). And, overall, just two players (the other is Dakota Dozier). That’s right, everyone else is gone. Calvin Pryor was dealt to Cleveland for pennies on the dollar, where he lasted only a few months. Jace Amaro, a flex tight end, got hurt, did little upon return and was soon waived. (Saying he failed would wrongly imply that he did anything at all.) IK Enemkpali became famous for breaking Geno Smith’s face. That help accelerate the downfall of Smith and led to a weird, short-lived rise for Enemkpali after he was traded to Buffalo in the fallout. We’d say more here and try to make football-sense of this draft, but it’s simply too soul-crushing.

Grade: D-

And you're being generous with the D-- . Simply terrible

It was almost impossible to pick a bust in that first round, but Idzik did.  So freaking much talent in that draft and to have 12 picks and miss on all of it almost mind boggling.

0 -12 UNREAL ! Even a blind squirrel finds a nut from time to time.

There are two ways of looking at that draft. First...yes idzik guessed wrong and got cute and really screwed the pooch. Second...he was able to amass 12 picks, many of them by manipulating the comp pick system.  So yeah, he whiffed most of them, but he generated the picks in the first place. In a perfect world he would manage and Mangini would be in charge of the draft. As it is Tannenbaum set the stage for disaster while Idzik dug us out of the rubble, only to trip on his own dick and hand the reigns to a guy who pissed away all of the equity on garbage free agent signings. There's a reason we constantly rebuild. Idzik had the best plan and the best system.  Bit the worst execution.

Not a single goddamn offensive lineman. I wonder where our team would be if we had used the first 5 picks on the offensive line. Couldn’t be worse!

in all fairness, that jets draft was heavily loaded with 6th round and lower picks. there's not much chance of most of those guys being special teamers or camp fodder.  the killers are missing in the 1st and 2nd rounds, and they missed badly.  those should be the standout players who become the team's stars.  as for mac's drafts, his first one wasn't so good but it looks like the 2016 and 2017 drafts have had pretty good yields.  and it looks like the jets have finally picked a guy, maye, in the second round who will turn out very well.

Fully agreed.  And I'd be all about bringing Mangini back in some capacity.

Right, and he used the cap space to get the team to 10 wins and one Ryan Fitz int from the playoffs, all while leaving him ways out of the contracts so that if everything fell apart (which it did) he wasnt hampered with a ton of bad contracts to get out from.

Did he negotiate poorly with fitz prior to year 2, absolutely.  Did he blow the hackenberg pick, yes.  But why would you criticize the 2 top 6 picks when both of them appear to be very good NFL Players.  Do you know how vast the difference between jamal adams and calvin pryor is?  Or how about Marcus Maye and Jace Amaro?

Yes it does take 4 years to overhaul a roster when year 1 is a bandaid year that worked and then you have to blow it up.

Look, I was shocked we didnt take an Olineman in this draft and even started a thread about it, but as you look at our draft class, we didnt really pass on any clear must pick Olineman.  Plus, I think that Mac (and a lot of other teams) look at Olineman as very hard to develop given the practice restrictions and would rather pay a FA lineman then draft and develop one.

Im more concerned that one of the Jet writers put out a tweet that Brandon Shell struggled more then people think last year and really needs to improve.  I hope a lot of that is due to Winters injury, but he is a player that needs to be an average starter at least for this team in 2018.

If you have gangrene on your pinky toe and put a bandaid, you can't say it's not your fault when they amputate your foot.

What Jet writer tweeted this?  I have been ranting it all along.  Cimini had said at the end of 2016 that they gave him a bunch of help in his starts at the end of the year, but last year they didn't mention it.  I consistently saw them put TEs and Qvale outside him and was not impressed.  OTOH, I didn't study him, other than to review some of the Raider game to show that his "shutting down Khalil Mack" was a mirage."  I think Bit said Shell did better than people thought, which was surprising.  It will be interesting if Dennison can get more out of him and if he fits the scheme.

basically Williams or Enuwa

Except that Mac didn't have 12 draft picks. Can't compare really. Idziots draft is in a league all it's own

They also picked 18th instead of 6th.  Idzik's draft was historically bad.  Maccagnan's is marginally better. The hurdle was on the floor and he barely cleared it.
