Antonio Garcia Released by Pats

Patriots released OT Antonio Garcia.

It's a stunner as Garcia was under consideration to replace Nate Solder at left tackle. The Patriots traded up to snag Garcia in the third round of last year's draft but he never saw the field in New England, missing his entire rookie season while battling blood clots in his lungs. The 24-year-old is finally healthy but needs to gain back weight after losing 40 pounds during his illness. Despite his health issues, it shouldn't take Garcia long to resurface.

I have no idea why the Pats would cut someone like this.  Could it be related to the blood clot issue or some other off the field thing?

He seems like someone who could be an excellent developmental prospect on our Oline.

His NFL.com scouting report said he consistently played around 280-290 in college and keeping the necessary bulk was one of the things that he would need to do in the NFL.  Maybe he cant get his weight up enough having lost 40 lbs being sick?

Was a good LT prospect. Heard him on Sirius prior to '17 draft. Impressive guy. I read he had blood clots last year?

If he's healthy he'd be worth a look, not necessarily for 2018 but 2019+

Agree - he would be a great guy to stash and develop for 2019

Neither of the New England Patriots’ top two draft picks played a single regular-season snap in 2017. The reason for defensive end Derek Rivers’ absence was obvious: He tore his ACL during a joint training camp practice with the Houston Texans, ending his rookie campaign before it began.

Tony Garcia’s, meanwhile, was cloaked in mystery. Garcia, a third-round draft pick last spring, spent the entire season on the non-football illness list, but the nature of his ailment wasn’t made public until Thursday. The offensive tackle missed the season after doctors discovered blood clots in his lungs, a source told the Boston Herald’s Jeff Howe.

Garcia, who didn’t play in the preseason either, is expected to make a full recovery, per Howe’s source. Having Garcia back in the mix would be a big help for the Patriots — who have major question marks at left tackle entering free agency — but it remains to be seen when he’d be ready to contribute. Already undersized coming out of Troy, Garcia dropped down to 260 pounds over the course of the season — far too light for an NFL tackle. Patriots tackles Nate Solder, Marcus Cannon, Cameron Fleming and LaAdrian Waddle all are listed at 315 pounds or heavier.

Garcia will have to work hard to bulk up this offseason, not to mention get back in football shape after spending a season away from the field.

Solder, Fleming and Waddle all are set to hit free agency when the league year opens March 14, leaving Cannon, Garcia, Cole Croston, Andrew Jelks and Jason King as the only New England tackles under contract for next season. Of that group, only Cannon has played in a regular-season NFL game. Solder, who’s expected to be the top tackle available if he hits the open market, has yet to begin contract talks with the Patriots, sources told Howe. Howe also reported the 29-year-old does not plan to retire.

Blood clots in the lungs which I assume are pulmonary emboli is extremely serious condition. Not sure what was the cause or what is his present treatment, but something is odd because people like this usually are on blood thinners the rest of their life.

When the New England Patriots drafted offensive tackle Antonio Garcia in the third round last year, they did so with the future in mind: The Troy product was seen as a potential replacement in case starting left tackle Nate Solder left the team via free agency in 2018. Fast forward to today and the Patriots might just need Garcia to become said replacement following Solder signing a record-breaking deal with the New York Giants.

The 24-year old, however, is entering the offseason with questions about his health: Garcia was forced to miss all of last year after doctors discovered blood clots in his lungs. According to a report by The Athletic Boston's Jeff Howe, the offensive lineman was placed on blood thinners and as a result lost more than 40 pounds. And while he was able to start working out again a few months ago, a timetable for a return was not set.

Despite the medical condition that made him miss all of his rookie campaign, Garcia is expected to make a full recovery and return to the field this offseason. And it sounds like this return is not too far away if the Boston Sports Journal's Greg Bedard is to be believed. Garcia reportedly “looks like he could step on a field tomorrow and hold his own” and has apparently added significant muscle since last year.

When asked about it, Garcia noted that he would feel the “best [he has] ever felt” and that he would be “ready to go”. Having the 6'7 tackle, who said that he is currently at 290 lbs – about 10, 15 pounds away from his ideal playing weight –, back at full strength would be an enormous boost to a Patriots left tackle depth chart that is currently headed by career backup LaAdrian Waddle.

Because of this, New England is seen as a team potentially investing in one of the top tier tackles on the draft market like Notre Dame's Mike McGlinchey or Texas' Connor Williams. However, Garcia being well on his way to return to form could drastically alter the team's approach in two weeks.

We need athletic OL for the zone blocking scheme, right?

We should sign this blood-clotting beast. Don’t even “bring him in for a visit”.

He'll be waived. So he has to make it to the Jets, #6 (same as draft order at this point) in the waiver claim order.

So will Clev, NYG, Indy, Hous and Denv not claim him?

He could actually make it to us. We need every guy who has a chance to contribute to the OL.

I cant imagine the Giants and Denver passing since they both need Oline help, but he would be a great zone blocking fit

I wonder why these facts never see the light of day when draft-media is in heat and jerking off to Bill's majestic "working the board" on draft day

Maybe there is an allegation surfacing now, from his college dorm room days. Classy NE would never put up with that stuff.

that's actually what i thought of, right after NE's long time defensive coach is being raked through the coals.

by the way, isn't this the Troy tackle @RobR was gushing over last year?

Yes it was. I loved him coming out because he was athletic and long with good feet and a nasty streak. Unfortunately I couldn't predict he'd get blood clots in his lungs and drop 40 lbs. I'd love to bring the guy in and kick the tires because the upside is there.

So blood clots are what ended Chris bosh’s Career.  Couple things...

first whyd he get blood clots- is it a genetic predisposition- if so don’t sign him

once you have a blood clot you’re typically on blood thinners for 6 months to years - if so you can’t sign him because his brain will bleed the first hit he gets

Oakland will probably sign him

I'm not usually a fan of picking up Pats cast offs, but this guy is definitely worth a cheap contract IMO

Bill Belicheat is developing a double agent to insert into the NY Jets lockerroom to give inside info on "Slammin' Sammy"

Garcia becomes the starting LT and then when we play the Pats, Lil' Bill gives the signal and BAM!!  Garcia pulls a "Matador Move" and a DE takes out Sammy's knee and he never fully recovers and the Jets go another 50 years looking for our Franchise QB!

I think they call it "being cat-phished"

Using steroids significantly increases the risk of the user to develop pulmonary embolisms and or deep vein thrombosis (layman terms, blood clots). It is not uncommon for these conditions to cause sudden death. He is lucky to be getting treatment. My guess is he was maintaining his body mass with anabolic steroids and given what has happened can never them use again. Once diagnosed the person being treated is usually placed on anticoagulant medication possibly for years or even permanently which in itself would place him at high risk for internal bleeding from the trauma of playing football. Stopping steroids (if this is the case) may or may not reverse his clotting disorder but either way I think he needs a new career.

they drafted Isaiah Wynn to play LT and while I'm a huge fan of Wynn, that's not a move they make unless  they were desperate

Pulmonary Embolism is no F-ing joke.....and the treatment is Blood Thinners/Anticoagulants. Not compatible with Football.

I'm about his size and I have a clotting condition, I've had 2 small clots that were dealt with in a simple manner, my next one means blood thinners

I would avoid NFL tackle football

Repetitive serious collisions are not good for that condition

I had to visit 3 hemotologists for a simple outpatient procedure, this is no minor condition

I have to think he would have a hard time passing a physical or the cheaters would have kept him
