Kelvin Beachum: 'We'll See' on Sam Darnold; He Hasn't Been 'Hit in the Mouth'

New York Jets offensive tackle Kelvin Beachum said Tuesday he's not prepared to heap praise on quarterback Sam Darnold until he sees how the rookie handles NFL defenses.

Darryl Slater of NJ Advance Media provided comments from Beachum, who did clarify that he's "excited" for the third overall pick in the 2018 draft to join the offense.

"Man, I'm one of those guys: Until you get hit in the mouth, I don't know what you've got yet," he said. "And he ain't been hit in the mouth by an NFL defensive lineman. So when that time comes, we'll see."

It's unclear how long it will take for Darnold to earn the starting job. He'll open training camp in a competition with Josh McCown, Teddy Bridgewater and Christian Hackenberg.

McCown, who was viewed as a short-term stopgap heading into last year, is coming off a strong campaign for New York. He ranked 11th in the NFL with a 94.5 passer rating.

So the USC product won't be handed the keys to the offense until he proves he's ready. He completed 64.9 percent of his throws with 57 touchdowns and 22 interceptions across the last two years with the Trojans and added seven rushing scores.

"I'm aware of it," Darnold told reporters about the team's past QB struggles. "Not growing up a Jets fan, I don't understand it quite to that extent. But I'm going to come in here and do my job. And be very confident in myself."

Regardless of who's under center, Beachum and the other members of the offensive line must do a better job. They allowed 47 sacks last season, tied for the NFL's seventh-highest total, and Football Outsiders ranked the group 27th in pass protection and 29th in run-blocking.

Darnold will be getting "hit in the mouth" quite a bit if the performance up front doesn't improve.

Sam Darnold has tapped an old Jets QB and friend for advice on the matter:

The only odd part about this is...it’s an offensive linemen telling him that he needs to see Sam get hit in the mouth lmfao.

Typical out of a D-lineman but it’s a little funny coming from a guy who is suppose to protect him from getting hit in the mouth.

Interesting commentary from a guy who’s job it is to prevent the rookie QB from getting hit in the mouth.

It makes perfect sense now. Since we have 1 of the worst Oline in the NFL and they know it, they can say they are just helping toughing up the rookie by letting him get hit so often lol.

I love Sam but Beachum is 100% right. Nobody knows who they are till they get punched in the face . Sam ain’t even worried.

Finally, someone who gets what the LT is saying .  There has never been an OT in the history of the NFL who has never been beaten by some DE . It happens even to the very best . Undoubtedly Sam Darnold will get smacked, and how he responds will tell his teammates more about him than any TD he throws .

Does anyone remember O’Brien bracing for the hit instead of forcing his way into the end zone back in the day . Does anyone remember Pennington and the dead leg move he put on that defender before scoring . Those plays elivate or downgrade a QB in the eyes of his teammates and make an OLman want to go that extra mile for his QB .

Nobody’s knocking Darnold, just letting him know what it’s going to take to impress his teammates beyond where he was drafted .

Wow, some of the responses in this thread are laughable.  All it really comes down to is a teammate making a point of not swooning over Darnold the way the fans are, which is the exact perfect way to be handling it.  Beachum didn't say a negative word about him, but basically made the point that he still needs to prove himself in the league.  It's absolutely true and is the mindset that the teammates, and coaches, need to be having with him, regardless of whether they think he could be the guy or anything else.

As far as some of the bitter little petty responses some around here feel the need to give because Beachum wasn't gushing about Darnold, it hardly helps an argument when you're desperately trying to find excuses to whine about the guy who was by a wide margin the best of the Jets' OL last year, at what is essentially a dirt cheap price for his position.

My thoughts on Beachum:

under appreciated move by our GM to find a starting caliber LT in free agency and sign him to a reasonable deal.  He’s not a cornerstone but we’d be a lot worse without him

Beachum is a smart guy and a very solid citizen

these comments ARE kinda tone deaf coming from an OL

and finally, no big deal

Beachum's plan did not seem to work for Bortles...  although the QB seemed to improve after he left, not a reume to be making those comments

35tds and 4400 yards in 2016 was far better than whatever garbage he did this year while being carried by an elite defense and fournette at RB requiring teams to stack the box. But who has time for facts?

Wrong. Those are Bortles' 2015 stats. Beachum was in Pittsburgh. Yeah, who has time for facts?

Beachum 2016:

Beachum suffered a concussion in a Week 2 matchup against the San Diego Chargers and was inactive for Week 3. He returned the following game and started the last 13 games of the regular season. Beachum finished his first season with the Jaguars starting in 15 games and was considered a disappointment after surrendering 49 quarterback pressures.[20] The 49 quarterback pressures was the 11th most by any offensive tackles in 2016. He received a 44.3 PFF production grade that ranked him 63rd out of 78th offensive tackles that qualified.[21]

On February 15, 2017, the Jaguars declined Beachum's four-year option, making him a free agent.

Brilliant comment from a pass protector, who job it is to prevent that happening

I wonder what his feelings on all of our other rookies are.

"Box safeties really shouldn't be blabbing how great they are until they get that 1st interception"

'Tiny linebackers that get hit in the mouth 4 times a game are good!"

Agree 100%. And if we do eventually upgrade at Left Tackle, still would like to keep Beachum around. Very versatile lineman that can provide quality depth and would be a great swing tackle

Cut him now, my LT Tackles talking about Sam D getting hit in the mouth!

I don't know about cutting him but what an absolutely idiotic thing to say considering he's there to prevent Darnold from getting hit.  He should say something like "we're going to do everything we can to help him succeed" or something like that.
