Legal or not we can bet whenever we want already.

No problem getting bets down around here.

This will only let the gov get their greedy hands in the action.

A friend of mine was so excited to hear the news until I broke it to him that any large bet he wins will be taxed.... At least it so be easier for the government to tax because theoretically you had to pay taxes on gambling winnings already, even if the bet was placed illegally.

good observation.  notice how these supposedly for the little guy governments enact plans to redistribute wealth from the lower classes to the state tax coffers and the wealthy sports bookies.

I’d rather have the govt in this. Look at what happened when they started lottery. I sh*t ton more money and it’s guaranteed. You’ll be able to do it online and if it’s less then $5000 (I think) you don’t pay taxes.

Not the place for this. We don't allow politics here. When we do people just start fighting so lets not do that. Thanks.

Yup. It's all bad, gambling, pot etc. UNLESS the government can make some bread on it. Then it's all good. lol

Of course it does not mean that states will legalize sports gambling. I live in California but from what I have read I would not expect NY to be legalizing it any time soon.

It SHOULD be a states rights decision. Hopefully they know their people the best. Or at least they should. lol

Yes. The sports leagues and NCAA have already moved from 'THAT'S HORRIBLE!" to 'WE NEED TO WET OUR BEAKS!"  at light speed.

So which player or ref gets caught being part of a gambling ring first?

Basketball, be it NCAA or NBA, is ripe for a fix job. Already had a ref admit to it. Watch-some nondescript nothing weeknight game is where it will happen.

It already happened in the NBA and somehow they managed to cover it up and pin it on 1 ref.  Whoever was the fixer for that one deserves a gold medal for that job.

Problem is the various states have totally saturated the market for gambling in their thirst for revenue; too many casinos and racinos, too many lotteries and scratch tickets. Happened to go to Foxwoods last week; a huge empty place. Play any game you like. Wasn't long ago there was AC and Vegas, now, every state has some form of casino gambling. There are only so many more ways to get people to bet and generate tax income. NY state, for example, has a mess of casinos across upstate that are mostly empty and nowhere near their revenue projections. AC,same thing. There's no more ways to get people in them,so for better or worse this will happen. It may not save any of these places, it's a regressive tax on mostly poor people who are bad at math. But they have nothing else to boost revenue.

Would note NY sold the lottery as to be strictly for educational funding. As you may know, NY state schools have since led the world in math and reading with NY kids splitting the atom and Good Will Hunting type stuff on a dail....yeah, that didn't happen. Went right into general revenue funds first chance they could do so.

Dont need legalized gambling for that to happen. Back in  the 50's there was a huge NCAA in college basketball scandal with point shaving . Lets not forget the Black Sox. Many more.

Supposedly this is happening at a very rapid pace throughout the Northeast (and that includes NY).  If NJ legalizes it (and I think they were the ones where this lawsuit started) then why would NY let all this revenue walk out the door to NJ?

Another government cash grab. We've been able to bet on every possible sporting event up here for years and nothing has changed. I assure you that the sun will rise the day after they go "live". In the end, Those who like to bet, bet. Those who don’t, won't.

First it was the casinos, now it's sports betting. Soon, it'll be cannabis.

Governments love cash....I say continue to support your local bookie...keep it local!, lol.

The government could stop legislating morality with drugs and legalize them too. Problem solved. Or at least one set of problems solved and others created.

Its very simple. If the "lower classes" Don't bet, the state gets nothing.

Yes but if sports betting becomes 10x more prevalent because it’s legalized in most states than its 10x more likely players and refs get involved in point shaving and rigging games

They are already fixing games in those leagues.  This will make it even more common

Ofcourse now that every Tom Dick and Harry in the Northeast will now have significant money on these games they are going to start wondering why James Harden is shooting all those free throws and why certain players have 5 fouls by the 3rd quarter while others have 0

Initially this will make a ton of money but eventually it will backfire

Mark Cuban said yesterday that if you're an owner of a major sports team, you just saw the value of your team double. Legal gambling will drive TV viewership, which is where these leagues (especially the NFL) make the bulk of their revenue. I heard talk on the news today in passing of the leagues actually getting a piece of the gambling pie themselves. Maybe just 1 or 2%, but still.

If billionaires are benefitting, it'll be here to stay.
