Patriot Killa
Jason Witten compares Sam Darnold to Tony Romo Recently retired tight end Jason Witten recently chimed his thoughts on which quarterback Sam Darnold of the New York Jets reminds him of. That’s right ladies and gentlemen, none other than Tony Romo. Whenever a young quarterback gets drafted into the NFL, especially to a team like the New York Jets, many people will have quick comparisons as to which players of the past they remind them of. It all depends on their throwing motion, collegiate success, and what they bring to the locker room that could inspire many to believe they might be the next version of a popular quarterback from back in the day. When it comes to recently retired Jason Witten, he’s already getting his insights ready for his Monday Night Football debut this upcoming season. Ready to put his thumbprint when it comes to broadcasting primetime football games, Witten has already chimed his thoughts on which quarterback reminds him of when breaking down everything Sam Darnold brings to the table. In an article written by Rich Cimini of ESPN, here’s what Witten said about his comparisons of Darnold to former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo: “He’s calm, he’s got poise, he reminds me a little bit of Tony Romo, the way he creates plays,” Witten said Thursday on ESPN’s Get Up! morning show. “He has some of that moxie.” That’s quite the compliment to give since Romo, before the injuries that eventually led to his retirement, was one of the top quarterbacks playing in the NFL. From his accuracy, ability to extend plays, and how he almost always came through in the clutch, a lot of those traits are also evident on Darnold based on his collegiate career at USC. If Darnold is able to translate such results in the pros, he should end up finally being the franchise quarterback everyone has been waiting for. One that is competitive, a leader among men, and able to bring success on a consistent basis. If Darnold ends up even having half of the prolific career that Romo has, things will be great for the Jets and their future.

Nixhead
I expect that Dawnold will air it out alot. He will move the offense. The Jets will be a higher scoring team. Yes he will throw interceptions and have turnovers. But he will have a chance to win the game in the 4th qtr. I expect alot of 35-31 kinda scoring games with Big Dawnold around lighting it up. We just need him to win the big games and get us to the promised Land.

Seriously if Darnold is Romo minus the poorly timed 4th quarter bonehead plays late in the season, or playoffs I’d be ecstatic, and I just compared him to Jimmy G, and Romo like Darnold is a bigger version of Jimmy G IMO, I’m so ride, or die with Sam! Beerfish
Romo, close to roma, as in tomatoes as in tomato sauce (or tomato gravy for you NY snobs) as in cheese with tomato sauce as in spicy sausage with cheese and tomato sauce, as in tomato sauce, cheese, spicy sausage and pasta! And red wine!
Sperm Edwards
Their throwing motions certainly aren't the same. Romo's was much more compact. Romo pulled it straight back & up, and less windmill-like. Just looking at some Darnold clips he seems to get it out quickly enough, even though he has more of a rounded windup. Delivery is hardly a fair comparison, though. Romo's delivery was about as fast and compact as anyone's ever. Haven't seen enough of Darnold - other than some clips here & there - to comment on his creating plays, but I'll take Witten's word for it. As @Lupz27 alluded to, hopefully he is nothing like Romo when under pressure (let alone his famous late-game mishaps).

Larz
In 7 years the new stud QB prospects will be compared Sam Darnold, and then people will say, "hey don't put so much pressure on the kid to be the next Sam Darnold"

Peyton Manning's play dropped off in the playoffs, too. I mean, Eli has as many championships as Peyton. Who would predict after seeing both of them play in the regular season? And if it makes you feel any better, Darnold is a lot more durable than Romo. Darnold got the sh*t beat out of him at times at USC and that'll help him at the next level. BUM-KNEE
Romo may have been a "choker", but the dude could play. To call him brittle is BS. RoadFan
I think Witten should compare Dez Bryant to Justin McCareins. Similar size, and Dez displayed the same inability to separate and a similar overall level of uselessness in 2017 that JM was infamous for around here. Bruce Harper
Sam is better. It appears that he is at least better in the clutch. Romo seemed to throw most of his INTs in the last six minutes of games. That is when Darnold is at his best — at least so far. Sent from my iPhone using JetNation.com mobile app

Darnold senses pressure extremely well... he can, and will, shorten it up when he has to. I friggin' hate baseball, but this analogy fits. He is sort of like a pitcher. Prefers to use the full windup when nobody is on base. But is also comfortable throwing from the stretch with a speedy runner on first.

Just take out the 4th quarter lol Romo-coaster Romo's lone interception Sunday was the 23rd fourth-quarter interception of his career. The Cowboys have lost the last eight games in which Romo has thrown a fourth-quarter interception, with six of those losses coming by seven points or fewer. Since 2010, Romo's Total QBR in the first 12 minutes of the fourth quarter/OT is 80. That's second-best in the NFL behind Peyton Manning. However, his QBR drops to a below-average 44 in the game's final three minutes. That motion is ugly as hell but you are right, he whips it out fast and he does seem to get uncanny accuracy and zip on it. I keep watching the Colorado game where he makes some incredible throws on the run. It’s ugly but suddenly a beautiful pass lands right in the perfect spot where only the WR can make the play. Clearly he had enough poor throwscwhere the defender ended up making the play but at just 20 and with his apparently excellent work ethic and attitude you have to believe that can be coached. I was 100% not a Darnold fan but now i’m having to look for positives they are there

Why is this even a story? Because Romo is severely under rated here. The guy was awesome, he just messed up in tight spots. We've already seen Darnold excel in crunch time, so maybe he's a bigger Romo that won't make the game ending mistake. He'll just turn the ball over all game and win it in the end, like Favre?
