Thanks to 2 straight franchise tags and his new Jets deal, Trumaine Johnson will have earned $64.7 million in fully guaranteed money over a four-year span from 2016-19. At a less prominent position, he and agent Joel Segal did pretty much the same thing Kirk Cousins and Mike McCartney did as far as maximizing leverage. Two examples of the franchise tag actually helping players.

A closer look at Trumaine Johnson's five-year, $72.5 million contract with the Jets: A $20 million signing bonus. Base salaries: 2018 - $6 million (fully guaranteed); 2019 - $8 million (fully guaranteed); 2020 - $11 million (guaranteed for injury only; becomes fully guaranteed on the third day of the league year); 2021 - $13 million; 2022 - $14.5 million. Cap charges: $10 million; $12 million; $15 million; $17 million; $18.5 million. In reality, it looks like a three-year, $45 million deal.

The Jets have re-signed NT Mike Pennel to a three-year contract, his agent announced on Twitter. Pennel is projected as the backup nose tackle, behind Steve McLendon, but there's a chance for a future starting role because McLendon is 32 and entering the final year of his contract. Pennel averaged about 20 snaps per game last season, mainly on run downs. So the Jets helped their depth today, bringing back Pennel and backup LT Ben Ijalana.

The Jets addressed their offensive-line depth by bringing back swing tackle Ben Ijalana, a source confirmed. He agreed to a one-year contract. For cap purposes, they declined an option last month, but they always had an interest in reuniting. Ijalana has value because he can play both tackle spots. He also has starting experience, so it's a solid move for the Jets.

The AFC East quarterback race is on. The Jets traded up Saturday to No. 3, acquiring the Indianapolis Colts' pick that Buffalo might have been targeting in a trade up for a quarterback. If the Bills want the same quarterback the Jets desire — and don't expect New York to telegraph that — then Bills would need to move up to No. 1 or No. 2.

Continuing to explore the second tier of free-agent receivers, the Jets are showing interest in former Jaguar Allen Hurns, ESPN's Josina Anderson reported. A visit was scheduled for Wednesday, but it was postponed due to expected snow in the New York area. Several teams are showing interest in Hurns, 26, who was released after a second straight disappointing season — 39 catches, 484 yards and two touchdowns. The Jets have conducted visits with Terrelle Pryor and Charles Johnson
