What has to happen for the Jets to be a perennial playoff team?

Ok so we got our franchise QB through some divine intervention. But the rest of this team is mediocre.  Mac’s been on the job for a few years now and the talent level is the pits. We have some talent here and there but we are lacking playmakers on offense and defense. Mac MUST start drafting better. These blue chip picks are not going to continue falling into his lap. Darnold is the perfect QB for this team. He’s young, smart, talented. A competitor. He instantly makes us a team to be reckoned with. So now what do we need in today’s NFL to turn this around?

We need Brady to retire.

We need Josh Allen to be named the starter in Buffalo.

We need Mike Tannembaum to get more control over cap resources in Miami.

If the Jets solved the QB problem... and I think they have...

Offensive line.

Offensive line.

Offensive line.

Offensive line.

Offensive line.

Everything else is a distant seventh.

Protect the QB.  Keep him healthy.  Control the tempo.  Score points.  Andrew Luck ain't doing so hot right now, is he?  The Colts OL got him f*cked up.  Aaron Rodgers has missed too many games, and thus the Packers have wasted 2 or 3 of seasons of having an all-time great.  Etc.

Woof.

Alright, so first off we gotta hope Sammy D. lives up to his badass gunslinger potential and provide him an offensive scheme that capitalizes on his strengths. Maybe that's Bates' offense? Who knows.

As for the rest, we need to have a good number of these mid to lower round talents panning out in one way or another, plain and simple. We can (usually) always fill in the gaps through free agency, but those young productive stars on cheaper rookie contracts have got to be our bread and butter. They'll be here for a while, they'll develop in the Jets' systems and they will form the core.

I think this year will be a big one in terms of finding out who will be a part of that. We've theoretically got some central pieces in the first rounders, and there's plenty of competition amongst lower round guys at almost every position group. Herndon and Leggett at Tight End, Hansen, Q, and Anderson at WR, Shepard and that other guy with the hard to pronounce F name on D-line, just to name a few.

The Jets could be a playoff caliber team within a year if even half of some of these kinds of players are productive and supplemented by next years batch of free agent talent.

O-Line is key. Every offensive player gets better with a solid O-line. Pass rusher. Top shelf receiver, TE, or RB. We'll compete with anyone.

I think this is particularly true in East Rutherford.  Have a capable QB, protect the QB, run the ball, rush the passer.

That is basically the Sanchez team.  This is doable.

New England does it without a bunch of superstars except for Brady and Gronk of course. They bring in O lineman out of nowhere. Running backs by committee. Undrafted cornerbacks. They just let go their 1 star receiver go after 1 season. Not sure I could name 2 of their D lineman. Jets have ample talent on this team to make a playoff run this season. Yes right flippin now. Coaching coaching coaching. Can Bowles coach them up? That is the question.

Get rid of a dozen teams

Our talent is not top tier but no where near as bad as OP suggests.  Defense is much improved and with good QB play the offense will look much better.

Our roster is overall average.  I don’t get people acting like we have a CFL roster they watch too much ESPN

We’re a pass rusher away from a top 8 defense.

need a legit stud RB or WR and then tighten up the OL

now that Darmolds here there’s some light

Pass rusher is imperative. We haven’t had one since Abraham. But even with an elite psss rusher, we are still an average D. Top 8 is a wet dream.

Average ain’t cutting it. We have been Bad for several years. Our drafts have been horrific thus resulting in this average roster.

Average doesn't mean "so-so," it means roughly half the teams are better and half worse. We are well below average.

Exactamundo. Below average. Just like our record has been over the last 6 years.

2012  6-10    2013  8-8     2014  4-12

2015  10-6     2016  5-11     2017  5-11

38-58  over last 6 seasons. Pathetic.

Even if we had a pass rusher? There’s not a gap on the defense besides that- we don’t have huge difference makers but this D is solid throughout with decent depth on the DL and secondary.

No they weren’t ‘decent’. They sucked. No sacks. Couldn’t stop tight ends. Gave way too many td’s. Look at the stats. And this year I don’t see it being much different. We MUST get a pass rusher in 2019. MUST.

Ding ding ding. Give the man a star. Take that money next year and get the OL straight before Darnold’s head is handed to him.

Fix the ******* oline. If they have a top oline it makes everyone on the O better. It gives the QB an extra seconds to throw, the receivers extra time to get open and the RBs an extra yard or lane to break long runs.

Fix the ******* oilne

The OLine needs to be revamped. Don’t be fooled with the new additions. They are average like the rest of this unit. Mac needs a top of the line LT RT before Sam takes over in 2019.

Good input. Get a new coach. Definitely.
