Former NFL quarterback and first round draft pick Johnny Manziel made his CFL debut for the Hamilton Tiger Cats last night and Jets fans might be surprised to hear that GM Mike Maccagnan was scheduled to be in the building to scout the disgraced former Cleveland Brown.

While the last thing any sane Jets fans wants is a player with Manziel’s off-field history in the locker room, there are a couple of scenarios at work here.

The Jets are currently carrying three quarterbacks in Josh McCown, Teddy Bridgewater and Sam Darnold.  After a strong showing in OTA’s, speculation of a Bridgwater trade has already begun to ramp up.  If dealing Bridgewater is a foregone conclusion in the mind of Mike Maccagnan, the Jets are likely exploring all options to bring in a third quarterback.

Another possibility is that the Jets view Manziel as a player they may also be able to flip for a draft pick if he plays well in Canada and then the NFL pre-season, allowing them to get something for what is essentially nothing at this point.

It’s not very likely, but in looking again at the possibility of needing a third QB if and when Bridgewater is traded, there’s another quarterback on the Tiger Cats roster with whom Maccagnan is familiar in Dane Evans, who was a tryout player for Gang Green last off-season.  With the current landscape among NFL quarterbacks, your third-string guys are going to be lesser-known players such as Evans, who did stick with the Philadelphia Eagles for a short time last season.

While we may not know if the Jets had their eye on any additional Tiger Cat players, we’re pretty comfortable in assuming they weren’t there to scout former Jets GM John Idzik’s favorite receiver in the 2014 class, Jalen Saunders, who was one of the first receivers targeted in the Tiger Cats loss.

Mike Maccagnan: I think I should go to Ontario and check out J...

Heimerdinger: Good idea, Mike! You should definitely go. Take a few weeks. Where is it? Iowa?

Macc: Ontario

Heimerdinger: Ahh. Take three weeks, man. Do it.

:Maccagnan, in Ontario, dials his phone:

Jets PR person: Hello?

Macc: Hi! It’s Mike! Mike Macc!!

Jets PR: Where the hell are you?

Jalen Saunders last year: 76 catches, 1170 yards, 15.4 avg, 4 TDs. That’s impressive. What was Devin Smith’s stat line? Huh, Glenn?

Devin carried over 200 water bottles, 100 gatorade drinks and replaced 40 jock straps. It was estimated to equal over 2000 yards. So there 4 you Tom.

No he didn't because if he did all that he would be out of the league with an injury settlement.

I wonder what other potential 3rd string qbs he will be looking into. I guess bridgewater is definitely on the trade block if Mac is making this long trip. The coffee sucks in Canada.

Johny Manzeil...Mike Maccagnan's plan B if McCown,Bridgewater and Darnold fail.

Lol no way.. I think the Johnsons want to make $$. One by trading bridgewater’s 6 mil, and then by making $$$ off a guy who will make league min, but still bring in $$$ like the Tebow fans lol

In Mac I trust. One thing I like about Mac is he likes to look for talent everywhere, it wouldn't be the first time he took a chance on a player from the cfl and it wouldn't surprise me if he was looking at more than just manziel. Either way I am all for taking a wild swing on depth guys who could end up being more even if that more just means they hold a roster spot while we find a trade suitor

If Bridgewater is any good I would not be in a hurry to trade him. Who’s to say that he won’t stay better than Dawnold and he still young. If Bridgewater is better play him and win games and keep him as long as he is better than Dawnold. When Dawnold becomes better than maybe unload Teddy B .

New York Jets draft Jalen Saunders and Shaq Evans
By Dan Hanzus,  End Around Writer

NEW YORK -- It took three days, but the New York Jets have addressed their need at wide receiver in the 2014 NFL Draft.

The Jets selected Oklahoma wide receiver Jalen Saunders with the 104th overall pick Saturday at Radio City Music Hall. The fourth-round selection completes the business related to last year's trade of cornerback Darrelle Revis to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Gang Green added its second pass-catcher 10 picks later, taking UCLA's Shaq Evans at No. 114. Evans, at 6-foot-1 and 213 pounds, excels in jump-ball situations and has shown the propensity to make the tough grabs outside his range.

Saunders was a three-year starter at Oklahoma after transferring from Fresno State. Though he's listed at 5-foot-9 and 165 pounds, Saunders doesn't shy away from contact. NFL Media analyst Mike Mayock called Saunders "one of the most physical wide receivers in football."

Saunders joins tight end Jace Amaro as the third offensive skill player selected by the Jets in this draft. Saunders will likely do most of his work in the slot for New York, and is a strong candidate to handle special teams return duties. He returned three punt for touchdowns with the Sooners, including memorable game-winners against TCU and Oklahoma State.

The Jets' wide receiver group now includes Saunders, Evans, Eric Decker, Jeremy Kerley, Stephen Hill and David Nelson. Count it as a surprise that general manager John Idzik waited this long to add help to one of the roster's thinnest positions.

This still upsets me.
