Looks like QBs are set for next 3 years except?

Obviously none of us know how the young QBs will pan out in this league but if you go division by division in both the AFC & NFC its pretty wild to see so many teams with young QBs and how things will play out for those teams with aging franchise QBs.

AFC East- Pats (Brady & ?), Jets (Darnold), Bills (Allen), Dolphins (Tanneyhill & ?)

AFC North- Steelers (Big Ben & Rudolph), Ravens (Flacco & Jackson), Bengals (Dalton), Browns (Taylor & Mayfield)

AFC South- Jags (Bortles), Titans (Mariotta), Colts (Luck), Texans (Watson)

AFC West- Chiefs (Mahomes), Chargers (Rivers), Raiders Carr), Broncos (Keenum)

So just looking at the AFC, the teams with the oldest franchise QBs are the Steelers, Patriots, Chargers, Ravens and Broncos. The Steelers & Ravens drafted young backups this year in Rudolph & Jackson. The Bengals & Dolphins appear to have the most mediocre veterans in Dalton & Tannyhill. No one knows where Andrew Luck stands in his rehab regarding his shoulder but damn, that boy has taking a BEATING in his career already & Bortles appears to be an average Joe on a really talented overall team, which in this age of free agency is very difficult to maintain.

Which leads me back to how exciting it is to have a 20 year old talented piece of clay for Bates to mold. Looking at where things are in the AFC regarding QBs whichever team develops the best QB out of this group are going to have some damn good success in this watered down league of parity. I know we as Jet fans have very little patience but my goodness, just knowing that Sam will be getting 3 years of NFL experience before he's Mayfields age now is wild. In 3 years, Rothlisburger, Brady, Rivers, Keenum, Flacco, will be shells of their past selves, everything will be up for grabs in the AFC. Dalton, Tannyhill, Bortles, Taylor, are what they are. Marriotta, Carr, Watson, have already shown flashes. The time IS NOW to find out if the youngster we drafted can lift this franchise. I find it hard to believe that Darnold doesn't see the field this year at some point. We need to get this youngster the experience he needs to make hay in 2019 & 2020. Can you imagine going into every season with a CHANCE to play in the tournament like Parcells liked to say. 2020-2030, could be the best decade in NY Jets history if this kids the real deal, gets great coaching & we finally surround our QB with playmakers. New York Jets tickets will be a hot commodity.

seems about right.  I don't know what the actual qb turnover rate is but it's usually higher than the average player's.  maybe 8 seasons?  10 seasons?  if it's 10 seasons then each year there needs to be 3.2 new qb's. in the next 3 seasons we can see changes with the patsies, steelers, giaints, chargers, saints.  other teams will shuffle their guys so a guy like dalton may be out in cincy but will be picked up by some team.

That's right...Dalton, Taylor, McCarron, and many more young backups that didn't make the grade will be floating around like McCown, Fitz, Bradford, and on & on. Please lord let Darnold be so good that you wont see the Jets organization sign some scrub for 15 freaking years!

Darnold is a valuable asset. He is 20 years old and should not be rushed. After waiting all this time to get a quality QB, we don't want setbacks in his development.

Agreed, however in the modern NFL where backup and 3rd string QB's get very limited reps in practice each week, the only real way to develop a QB is to play him in real games.  I'm not saying I want Darnold thrown to the wolves in week 1, but unless he proves himself to be completely incapable through practice and the preseason, he needs to be starting by the last third of the season at worst so he can at least get 4-5 real games under his belt going into the 2019 season.  If the brain trust think he's ready before then, by all means, put in in there.

I hope Sam continues to stay healthy, he's a durable kid.  As much as you could say poor Rosen took a beating from his offensive line, he did have his LT drafted in the first round.  Sam never had that, the three OL he lost in the 2017 and the two in the  2018 draft, 2 went in the late rounds (one now out of the NFL) or went undrafted.

if not for Sam's escapability and creative play, kid would have been dead.  Not minimizing Josh's poor line, but Sam's was just as bad.

The tide is turning. Once Brady and Big Ben are done, AFC is wide open.

I don't even know if Roethlisberger matters. Since 2011 The Pats have appeared in 7 consecutive AFC Title games and won 4 of them. The Steelers have only appeared in 1 and they lost -- same as the Colts and Jaguars. It's really just the Pats that are consistently dominant in the AFC -- once Brady retires it will be an all new ballgame.

Good post. Interesting to see how the AFC is stacking up re QB and how there is very likely going to be a whole new set of teams rising to potentially challenge the old dynasties. Of course, Etling may turn out to be Brady, Part 2, but I'm going to go out on a limb and speculate that he's practice squad fodder and nothing more. The Pats will be all in on a franchise QB starting next draft. Have to be. Rudolph, on the other hand, has potential to be the guy. Steelers are better situated than the Pats. (One wonders if Belicick failed to draft a QB higher on purpose.... if he's heading for the door, it would be a giant FU to Craft for throwing away Garapolo.

I can see the Bills and Dolphins looking at this year as a tank year.  For the Dolphins, it will be to draft a QB.  The Bills to restock while Allen learns for a year.

That could provide the Jets with some wins and lull us into complacency for 2019.

I don’t think the AFC will be considered wide open when those guys leave. Pretty sure the Jets will have a stranglehold on the conference for the decade following Brady’s and Ben’s retirements.
