I wish some beat writer would do an article on just who decides who plays in the upcoming game?  Is it the position coach? Is it the coordinator?    I understand Bowles, as HC, has veto/final say but if a position coach is saying player xx is the best I have right now for what we want to do, is it typical for the coordinator and HC to go along w/the position coach. Obviously, injuries don't apply regarding this.

I mean, it's always gonna be the HC. Like you said he has the final say, it's on him who's out there. The other coaches give their input, who they think is ready and best fit but ultimately it's on the HC.

More than less I agree, but...    they rotate in and out... I think the position coaches and the DC put their heads together pregame.

NFL trade rumors: Khalil Mack to Jets? Mike Maccagnan 'focused' on improving front 7

Mike Maccagnan just sent Jets fans into a daydream.

The Jets' general manager went on ESPN New York on Wednesday afternoon and said that he adding an edge rusher or outside linebacker is "an area we're focused on."

Maccagnan added that - while the Jets have some in-house talent that could prove to be the answer - he's open to options on both the trade market and waiver wire to bolster those spots ahead of the season.

NFL rumors: Jets move Bridgewater?

"It's a position that, again, we're looking at," Maccagnan said. "We definitely, like a lot of teams out there, are looking at any options to potentially improve ourselves, make ourselves more competitive. But, again, that will play itself out over the preseason."

With that said, one big name comes to mind as a potential trade option: Khalil Mack.

The Raiders' dominant defensive end is currently in a contract holdoutas he looks to secure a long-term deal; the Raiders had picked up the fifth-year option on his rookie contract for this season.

Mack isn't currently on the market - or at least the Raiders haven't made it publicly known that they're shopping him. But if Mack continues the holdout and the Raiders come to believe he truly won't play without securing a long-term, big-money deal - and aren't willing to cut that check - then a trade could come into play.

If that happens, Mack would make perfect sense for the Jets, who struggled to get pressure on the quarterback last season. They ranked 28th in the league with just 28 sacks during 2017.

Mack, meanwhile, collected 10 1/2 sacks last year and has posted double-digit sacks in each of the past three seasons.

Of course, trading for a player like Mack would require the Jets to give up a big haul of talent and draft picks. And, as we already said, it's not clear that he'll even become available.

Even if he is, the Jets could decide that their in-house options at defensive end are good enough that they don't need to make such a trade. They added two DEs - Nathan Shepherd and Foley Fatukasi - during the draft and also signed veteran Henry Anderson to help fill that position this offseason.

But Maccagnan's words on Wednesday have surely set Jets' fans minds racing with possible trade combinations and fantasizing about seeing Mack in green and white.

Now we'll just have to see if Maccagnan's comments were a hint at a blockbuster or simply a sign of smaller moves to come. Either way, it looks like the Jets' current crop of DEs and OLBs could wind up with some added competition.

Wheels are turning; if Maccganan looks at this team today and says it will be so rough Nick Bosa at entry level slotted salary is a real possibility in 2019, you don't make this move. If you think this is a 6 or 7 win team that will have no shot at Nick Bosa, you start thinking you deal away that pick and some other stuff to get a prime edge guy even with a huge cap #. It's very intriguing. Still don't love the Jets' OL, but this defense with Mack if you can keep Leo could be very hard to pass against. It would be a serious difference maker.
