EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - In his most important audition for the Jets so far -- a full half against a first-team defense -- Sam Darnold was not at his best. But it still might have been good enough to convince Todd Bowles to hand him the starting quarterback job.

The 21-year-old Darnold only completed 8 of 16 passes for 86 yards in the Jets' 22-16 loss to the Giants on Friday night. But beyond the numbers the kid continued to look like he's ready. He led two touchdown drives against the Giants' first-team defense, despite a leaky offensive line, generally poor field position and a patchwork receiving corps. Yes, his numbers probably should have been better.

They certainly could have been worse.

The most impressive thing about Darnold is still his poise under pressure and his ability to get out of trouble. Several times he escaped a pocket that was collapsing and managed to get in position to throw the ball away. Once, on a 3rd and 13, he moved up through the pocket and took off for a 15-yard run. He also threw a touchdown pass to receiver Terrelle Pryor with several defenders in his face.

And while he was off on some of his throws, he continues to put passes in places where only the receivers can catch them - something good quarterbacks do to cut down on turnovers.

No, he hasn't lit it up yet. The Jets still haven't allowed him to test himself (and defenses) deep. But if this summer has been about seeing if Darnold, the third-overall pick, is really ready -- and yes, that's what it's been about -- then at this point the answer has to be "yes."

Maybe Teddy Bridgewater is the best quarterback in camp. Maybe Josh McCown would be a steadying influence for a still-young team. And maybe there will be some struggles early as Darnold adjusts to life as an NFL starter. But it's been clear so far that he can handle that. No, he wasn't great on Friday night. But nothing he did gave any indication that he's not up for the job.

As for the rest of the Jets, here are some more notes and observations from their third preseason game …

  • The Jets special teams were pretty bad last year and they looked like an absolute nightmare in this game. It's hard to adequately describe how bad their coverage was on the 55-yard punt return for a touchdown by Giants WR Hunter Sharp. It was as if they were all expecting the kick and the return to go to the other side of the field. That wasn't their only bad punt coverage either. And their night was made worse when rookie RB Trent Cannon -- who has had a tough summer fielding punts -- fumbled a kickoff return when he was hammered by Giants LB Ray-Ray Armstrong. In his defense, it looked like he was horse-collared from behind by Giants WR Russell Shepard right before he took the hit, but he still has to hold onto the ball.
  • RG Brian Winters returned to action and the offensive line was a little better, but it is still a work in progress. Brent Qvalestruggled at LT in place of Kelvin Beachum and, as noted above, Darnold was on the run far too often. There also wasn't much room to run. Take out Darnold's two carries and Bilal Powell and Isaiah Crowell combined for 26 yards on 11 carries in the first half. In fairness, the Giants' defensive line is outstanding - particularly against the run. But that's still not very good.
  • There's understandably been a lot of focus on the Jets' search for an edge rusher, but overlooked has been the solid addition inside of LB Avery Williamson. He made a terrific play early in the game to stop Giants RB Jonathan Stewart and rip the ball from his arms for a fumble that DE Leonard Williams recovered.
  • Williams, by the way, returned that fumble 39 yards flashing pretty impressive speed for a 302-pounderpounder. He had a couple of quick pass rushes too. He's going to need help from somewhere, but he seems increasingly primed for a bounce-back year. Of course, he was facing Giants RT Ereck Flowers on Friday night. That's a good matchup for most.
  • Nice to see Quincy Enunwa back in action for the first time in a year and making his first catch since the final game of the 2 016 season. He had two big catches for 28 yards. Terrelle Pryor made his Jets debut too with a 12-yard touchdown catch. WR Jermaine Kearse did not play in the game.
  • Rough night for Jets TE Eric Tomlinson. Two false start penalties in the first two drives. He also got absolutely destroyed trying to block Giants LB Olivier Vernon. The Jets' tight end position is an open book. The team is hoping rookie ChrisHerndon and second-year pro Jordan Leggett emerge. But Tomlinson has to do better than that to stay in the mix.
  • K Taylor Bertolet missing an extra point, albeit after it was pushed back because of a penalty, doesn't help his cause after the Jets brought in veteran K Jason Myers.

I'd like to see 33 make some plays considering the investment made. That's a matchup he should be winning.

He makes a lot of plays.  Maybe youd see them if you stopped spending so much time questioning why every play isnt a game changing sack, tackle or INT.

And waiting to see what he develops into, hes heading into his second year.

Did anyone else notice that Chris Herndon lined up several times as a FB?

Have a strong feeling they are going to go with 4 TE's and 0 FB's

Wouldn’t be shocked myself . None of the fbs have stood out at all.

Game was fun last night.

Jets starting secondary was PUTRID and VERY FRUSTRATING to watch.

@JiF:

YOU ARE CORRECT Sir. I WAS WRONG. DESPITE the Capital invested via Draft and FA, the secondary is a joke and still capitulating too many big plays and deep passes. :(

Something to keep an eye on: @NYJets fullback usage dropped from 42 percent last week to 16.7 percent last night. NYJ only employed a fullback on nine of a possible 54 snaps vs Giants: 6 for Lawrence Thomas and 3 for Dimitri Flowers. NYJ might keep an extra TE over a FB

Neither makes the team Flowers maybe to the practice squad.

Jets rookie report card vs. Giants | Terrible night for the draft picks

The Jets' large crop of rookies got another chance to impress during on Friday night against the Giants. So how did some of the big guns – like quarterback Sam Darnold, tight end Chris Herndon, defensive end Nathan Shepherd and more – fare during the pivotal third preseason game?

Chris Herndon

Here's how the Jets' rookies graded out on Friday night.

QB Sam Darnold

Grade: B+

Analysis: For the most part, Darnold did a nice job of managing the game. When he got into a rhythm, the offense moved the ball well. He made plays and connected on throws when they were available. In short, Darnold looked like a guy capable of starting in the NFL.

Next step for Darnold?

Darnold is going to have a few weeks without game action; the next time he steps on the field, it will be in Detroit for Monday Night Football in the Jets' season opener. The 21-year-old rookie all but secured the starting job with his performance on Friday night. He may not have been the Jets' best quarterback over the past four weeks, but he was close enough to Teddy Bridgewater and Josh McCown that the Jets can justify giving him the job and letting him learn on the fly.

DE Nathan Shepherd

Grade: C-

Analysis: Shepherd had a very quiet night, recording just one tackle – and it wasn't even a solo effort. He wasn't a problem by any means, but he just didn't stand out and wasn't particularly productive. He played the first half with the first team, then stuck around for a little while with the Jets' backups, too.

Next step for Shepherd?

Shepherd is still on track to be the Jets' starting defensive end opposite Leonard Williams, so that's certainly good news for him. But he needs to keep developing in practice between now and Week 1; the Jets desperately need more pass-rushing ability and would love Shepherd to start chipping in a bit more in that department.

TE Chris Herndon

Grade: C

Analysis: Herndon was targeted just once on the night. Darnold was flushed out of the pocket and ran to his left, then fired back across his body toward Herndon. But the tight end was pretty well covered and the pass was broken up.

Next step for Herndon?

The good news is that Herndon finally saw some game action. The bad news is that he didn't really do much in his one. Herndon looked great during training camp before getting knocked out due to injury and needs to recapture that form over the next week or so if he wants to grab the Jets' starting job.

Matt Stypulkoski | NJ Advance Media for NJ.com

CB Parry Nickerson

Grade: N/A

Analysis: Nickerson missed Friday night's game, meaning he still hasn't suited up in any of the three preseason games to this point.

Next step for Nickerson?

At this point, Nickerson just needs to get healthy again. He got a little bit of work in practice this past week, but still isn't participating fully. His absence has been a shame from the Jets' perspective – he was emerging as the No. 4 cornerback before the hamstring injury cropped up. Now his spot on this roster is a bit of a question mark, simply because he's lost so much time that could have been used for evaluation and development.

DE Foley Fatukasi

Grade: C

Analysis: Fatukasi was just as quiet as most of the Jets' rookies on Friday night. He rotated in with the starters on a few occasions, but didn't come up with any tackles. He was nearly the play several times, but never quite seemed to be the guy making it. Like Shepherd, he wasn't a liability – but he also wasn't playmaker and didn't manage much, if any, pressure on the Giants' quarterbacks.

Next step for Fatukasi?

Fatukasi could use a big week of practice and, if he plays, a strong game against the Eagles on Thursday. Odds are that he makes the team at this point, but there remains a chance that the Jets could try to stash him on the practice squad. It's up to Fatukasi to make it impossible for the front office to pull that trigger.

Darryl Slater | NJ Advance Media for NJ.com

RB Trenton Cannon

Grade: D

Analysis: It wasn't a good night for Cannon. We already knew coming into the game that he'd had trouble fielding punts during training camp and the preseason. On Friday, his turnover ball-security woes extended to kickoff return when he had it knocked loose after a short return. That's bad news for a guy who was drafted as a potential return man. On the bright side, he was the Jets' most effective running back, picking up 23 yards on five carries – good for 4.6 yards per touch.

Next step for Cannon?

Cannon has to clean up the errors in order for the Jets to consider playing him in the regular season. After a really hot start to camp, Cannon has slid backward of late and is inching closer to the bubble. The Jets' Friday signing of Charcandrick West doesn't help his cause, either. But even with the turnover issues, his raw speed may still earn him a spot on this team. The Jets may hesitate to cut a guy that could potentially develop into a dangerous playmaker, but Cannon needs to start displaying flashes of that potential again over the next week or so.

Other standouts
  • LB Frankie Luvu: The Washington State man picked up a 5-yard sack against Davis Webb in the third quarter. He spent the night playing at outside linebacker with the Jets' second-team defense, but was the only OLB to get notch quarterback hit.
  • LB Anthony Wint: He came up with two tackles, which led all rookies. But the solo efforts came on back-to-back plays late in the final two minutes of the fourth quarter.

I don’t agree.  If we try to stash him on our practice squad New England or another smart team will grab him and make him this years Woodhead.   He has speed moves and good hands - he should become a dangerous weapon for us

That's actually his biggest problem - he doesn't have Woodhead toughness. He's effective in open field but goes down as soon as he's brushed. I saw one impressive run where he actually fought for extra gain but typically he's more CannedAir than Cannon. A huge disappointment in my book. Was gonna post it in the "What do you all think of ..." thread by freemanm weeks ago but thought I'd give Cannon more time. It's okay to be small if you play big like Woodhead but Cannon is a wimp. Belichick noticed Woodhead's consistently tough effort and saw much to work with.

Jets special teams a special kind of awful with missed extra point and fumbled kickoff in loss to Giants

The Jets’ special teams unit was a special kind of sloppy in their 22-16 preseason loss to the Giants Friday night. Gang Green gave up a punt return for a touchdown, missed an extra point and fumbled a kickoff return, prompting plenty of head scratching (and four-letter words) on the sideline.

“I’m disappointed in the fact that there some people that had a chance to shine and try to make this team… and they had an opportunity,” Bowles said. “Some of them didn’t fare too well.”

Gang Green kicked off the calamities with poor execution on Hunter Sharp’s 55-yard punt return for a score late in the first quarter. Darron Lee was just one of a few Jets players who were blocked or out of position on the play.

A few minutes later, Taylor Bertolet, who’s battling with recently acquired kicker Jason Myers for a job, missed an extra point. Rookie Trent Cannon, who had already muffed two punts in the preseason, fumbled after getting drilled on a kickoff return with four minutes left in the first half.

Oh, and Gang Green committed three of their four penalties on special teams before intermission.

PENALTY OVERLOAD

Bowles’ penalty pushups in practice evidently aren’t working. The Jets committed 13 penalties for 108 yards.

“It felt like more than that,” Bowles said. “We practice doing things on it. We can’t have that going into opening day…. The penalties are unacceptable and will be unacceptable going forward. We got two more weeks to clean it up.”

**

Terrelle Pryor (foot/ankle) caught both of his targets for 16 yards, including a 12-yard catch and run for a touchdown in the second quarter in his preseason debut.

**

Quincy Enunwa had two catches for 28 yards in his first game since the 2016 season. “He looked quick,” Bowles said.

**

Great awareness by Avery Williamson on his forced fumble late in the first quarter. The veteran linebacker ripped the ball out of Jonathan Stewart’s hands inside the 5-yard line before Leonard Williams scooped it up and rumbled for 37 yards. The turnover marginalized Eli Manning’s 54-yard completion to Cody Latimer, who toasted Mo Claiborne to set the Giants up in position to score.

**

The Jets’ touted secondary was whole for the first time since Marcus Maye’s return. Maye, coming back from offseason ankle surgery, made his preseason debut.

**

Outside linebacker Jordan Jenkins (roughing the passer on Alex Smith), LB Darron Lee and outside linebacker Frankie Luvu were each fined $20,054 by the league for illegal hits against Washington last week.

**

Right guard Brian Winters started after missing last week due to injury.

Left tackle Kelvin Beachum (foot) didn’t play even though he practiced during the week. The Jets are taking a cautious approach to ensure that he’ll be ready for Week 1.

**

The Jets signed former Chiefs RB Charcandrick West…

CB Rashard Robinson suffered a groin injury…. WR Jermaine Kearse didn’t play due to a sore abdomen….

Nose tackle Steve McLendon (leg) didn’t play.

Its funny that he has good hands for catching passes but not so good for punts and kickoffs.   I’d guesss it’s a confidence and comfort level kind of thing, and that he will get better over time.     I don’t see  the ball security issues on runs.   Meanwhile Rawls has been putting a lot of balls on the carpet, so it’s not like we have a better choice for RB3 with McGuire out

Charcandrick West was just signed , wave bye bye to Cannon.  While he has looked good at RB , its been in practice or against 2nd and 3rd string opponents. I focused on him last night and while the Oline was pretty bad , he looked indecisive at best.  Speed is great but keeping someone just because they are fast is crazy.

Yep he was there ripping every one of them a new cushy comfort zone. Maybe he will make them do 20 push ups today.

Thank you. It's unbelievable that people who devote so much time and energy to watching football don't understand this simple concept. It's nearly impossible to cover a player for more than 3-4 seconds.

Eli sat back without any pressure.  It's too easy.

Don’t think any of those guys were the 6th pick in the draft.

What does it matter where you were drafted , Tom Brady was what a 6th round pick , Antonio Brown ??.  Then you have guys like Jamarcus Russell , Vern Gholston, Ryan Leaf, Keith McCants, Dion Jordan, Tony Mandarich I can go on and on and on naming top round picks that were clear busts. Adams is a damn good player you guys just don't know what your looking at .

I’m gonna fall back on this. I’ll trust you guys on Adams. He was a high pick for a reason.
