Interesting talking on realistic Edge Rushers

I know we dream of Mack and to a lesser extent Fowler, but this is an interesting list of names:

Jets GM Mike Maccagnan admitted recently during an interview on ESPN Radio that the team is watching the waiver wire closely and looking at potential trade opportunities to upgrade their pass rush off the edge.

Over the last few days, it's been reported that they may have interest in Dante Fowler and Khalil Mack. However, those options may not be viable possibilities. Let's instead think outside the box to consider some low-key moves that could improve their depth or provide a short-term upgrade and whether or not they'd be a good fit...

Elvis Dumervil, free agent

If the Jets are high on young players like Frankie Luvu or Dylan Donahue eventually developing into contributors, then maybe all they need is a short-term stop-gap. The 34-year old Dumervil has the best credentials on the market with 105.5 career sacks, including 6.5 last season -- a number which would have led the Jets. They'd need to move quickly, though, because there's speculation the 49ers might look to re-sign Dumervil after having just traded Eli Harold.

Chris McCain, Colts

The 26-year old might be a longer-term proposition, as he broke out with a five-sack campaign in a reserve role with the Chargers last year. McCain might be the odd-man out in Indianapolis as the likes of John Simon and Margus Hunt have responded well to their new 4-3 system, so could be available for a late pick or via final cuts. He was arrested in the offseason, though, and was involved in a major brawl at a recent joint practice, so he might not meet the ideal character requirements.

Junior Galette, free agent

Speaking of character issues, Galette is another edge rusher who is available but would almost certainly not be a consideration for the Jets due to a widely-publicized domestic violence incident in 2015. Galette was a top pass rusher a few years ago, as he posted 12 sacks in 2013 and another 10 in 2014. Since then, he's had injury issues anyway and may struggle to find a home even if he can convince teams to take a chance on his character.

Nate Orchard, Browns

The Browns have brought in a lot of young pass rushing talent over the last few years so it seems inevitable that someone with potential will shake loose. Orchard is a candidate after recording just five sacks in his first three seasons. Back in 2016, he was viewed as one of the best pure pass rushers in the draft coming out of Utah and eventually went in the second round. Could a team like the Jets get a player who might be ready to break out with a late round pick?

Should the Jets consider trading for a top-notch pass rusher before the season starts? The Daily News Live panel debates.

Hau'oli Kikaha, Saints

Kikaha is a young player we suggested could be a trade option for the Jets back in March and nothing has really changed. He's shown some promise as a situational rusher with the Saints, racking up eight sacks in two years despite a limited role. And word out of New Orleans is that he's on the roster bubble.

Shaq Barrett, Broncos

The Broncos are another team that goes four-deep at the edge defender spots but would probably prefer to move Shane Ray. However, Barrett is a player the Jets are rumored to have coveted for some time. He'd cost them a higher pick -- or more valuable player -- than most of the names listed here, but is a player who is yet to hit his prime and could produce in volume if given a greater workload.

Kamalei Correa, Ravens

Correa had no sacks in his first two NFL seasons, but may be primed for a break-out, as evidenced by his first preseason game, which saw him rack up three sacks and an interception. With Tim Williams also making a major impact in preseason, perhaps the Ravens could be compelled to cash in on Correa's promising summer, enabling the Jets to provide an opportunity to another young option with upside.

Frank Zombo, Chiefs

The 31-year old Zombo is currently on the bubble in Kansas City and he brings a level of experience no edge defender on the Jets roster has because he's started 36 games in his career. While a good special teamer, Zombo graded out poorly in recent years and never put up big sack numbers. This would be more of a short-term depth move and not worth giving up a pick for.

Lamarr Houston, free agent

Finally, Houston has remained unsigned all offseason despite racking up four sacks in five games when given a shot with the Bears down the stretch last year. That's more than any Jets edge rusher had all season. If all other options are exhausted, perhaps he'd be worth a one-year prove-it deal.

Given the amount of young depth at all the positions besides OL/Pass-rusher, is anyone more open than normal to trading 2-3 late round picks(4th-7th round) this year to acquire immediate help on Oline and OLB?

Ive noticed that part of the Mac criticism that I have with bad roster management is that we cut of a lot of late round picks due to log jams at their position or will at least be faced with that this year. We already have a glut of young JAGS that are fine for depth/development so I’d hate “waste” late round picks next year considering how this team is already made up.

We need “decent” known commodities at OL depth and passrusher NOW. I think we would be better served not worrying about late round picks so much this year and finding good trade value like when Mac got Brandon Marshall. Mac seems to be good at these types of trades.

We will most likely get something back for Teddy and can fill holes with cap space which Mac has been very good at in FA. Just curious if anyone feels the same about being much more willing to trade those picks and save the 1,3 and whatever we get for Teddy.

Yes ... OLB who should be on younger up & comer with potential...so we can hope his career peaks 2-5 years from now.

OL I'm open to HTF help this year , as well as young up & comer with potential ... So Darnold doesn't wind up in the morgue if one of our starting 5 goes down

(regarding OL ... If we go the HTF, still can play for 1-2 years, with declining skill , route I would want to wait to trade until seeing if such a player shakes out first after final cuts )

I would without a doubt trade day 3 picks to strengthing our OL and Edge.

Like you said, it actually plays well to an area Macc seems to be ok at which is finding decent back of the roster guys in FA and UDFA. He does a half way decent job filling the roster with these random guys like McBride, Hewitt, Sterling, to name a few who then seem decent.

He does do a good job of this which can be negative when you now have no room for your picks. At this point I’d rather use those picks on known commodities that aren’t bubble players and can immediately fix our weaknesses. Even for only 1-2 years while we find a long term fix.

I can’t see why the Ravens would give up Correa, but that’s the only dude I’d want from that list.

I can't see why The Pats traded Chandler Jones for a second rd pick he led the league in sacks last year with 17..

Its not the necessity that so many here think it is.  If you have olbs that  hold the edge, safties and corners can generate preasure and sacks.  Sure it would be nice to add a plus or blue chip rusher but we will be okay this year.

(we will get one eventually and ol reinforcement as well but finding “our Qb” was step one)

how does he miss out on Correa for a 6th

Correa is no upgrade. Macc didn't miss out.

We have a shed full of maybes ...

as evidenced by his first preseason game, which saw him rack up three sacks and an interception

Correa has 1.5 tackles plus a half sack this preseason and recorded nothing Week 2 versus Colts. The HOF game is just a dress rehearsal.

The Denver Broncos have great depth at outside linebacker and running back.  That means the team will have to cut some talented players at both of those positions.

Denver would probably love to sneak rookie pass rusher Jeff Holland and second-year running back De’Angelo Henderson onto its 10-man practice squad. Those two players would have to be subject to waivers before joining the practice squad, though, and both would likely be claimed.

Henderson is “already generating interest” from NFL teams that anticipate him possibly being cut, according to the Denver Post’s Ryan O’Halloran. Holland is also drawing interest, according to The Athletic’s Nicki Jhabvala.

The Broncos’ outside linebacker depth chart is crowded with Von Miller, Bradley Chubb, Shane Ray and Shaq Barrett leading the way. The team probably can’t afford the roster space to carry five players at the position, so Holland may end up being cut.

The team’s backfield is also crowded, featuring Devontae Booker, Royce Freeman, Phillip Lindsay, David Williams, Henderson and fullback Andy Janovich. Denver may carry five backs (including Janovich), but six is probably unlikely to happen.

The Broncos may be able to get Williams to the practice squad if they keep Henderson. The front office will have many tough decisions to make. The 53-man roster must be submitted by Saturday, Sept. 1.

I liked Holland coming out of Auburn hopefully they do cut him

I’m convinced Luvu will get the job done

hes going to be like Anderson, a great udfa signing, who will eventually be overrated on here, because he’s going to make a bunch of huge splash plays. But still have a bunch of holes in his game

Nevertheless , a great signing

Ravens seem to have some depth...Doubt Judon is available..On May 5, 2016, the Baltimore Ravens signed Judon to a four-year, $2.59 million contract with a signing bonus of $255,736.

OLB Matt Judon, Ravens (25)

Judon will turn 26 before the season begins, but let’s not let a mere technicality keep him off this list. The Ravens’ underrated outside linebacker racked up eight sacks, two forced fumbles, and three pass deflections last year, totaling 17 tackles for a loss—tied for fourth most league-wide. Even on plays where he wasn’t credited with a stat, he made his presence felt

In a contract year, Za’Darius Smith could shine for the Ravens

Selected by the Baltimore Ravens in the fourth round (122nd overall) of the 2015 NFL draft, Za’Darius Smith now enters the fourth and final year of his rookie contract. In his three years in the NFL with the Ravens, Smith has accumulated only 10 sacks. It is worth noting, over half of them came in his rookie year (5.5).

In his sophomore year, Smith severely disappointed, finishing the season with only one sack. This was partly due to the return of Suggs and the emergence of rookie Matthew Judon. Smith was on the roster bubble entering the 2017 season, as the Ravens selected two more linebackers in the draft, Tyus Bowser and Tim Williams, in hopes of improving the pass rush.

Smith made the team, and contributed more than any non-starting outside linebacker with 3.5 sacks, 24 total tackles, and a forced fumble. He played a key role in the teams overall sack total (41) by consistently pressuring the quarterback and engaging blocks to allow other players such as Judon or Suggs to close in and make the sack.
