Although Johnson gets to cash in one more time in FA at age 29 when this 3-year deal ends. He'll get one more payday, probably another 3 year type deal for a win-now team that needs a Tier 1 RB to put them over the top.
jetstream23
Quote The deal is for $39 million, including $30 million guaranteed, and can be worth up to $45 million, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter. Johnson's $30 million in guaranteed money is the third-highest figure among active running backs.
Tony MaC
So about 10 million a year counting this season. Pretty good for both sides. It seems teams are willing to give a huge multi-year payday to Running Back's that: A). Provide a well above average amount of production to their offense and/or take the edge off of a burgeoning Franchise QB. B). Are young enough or have few enough carries in their career (give or take 1k and change?) that they have a future worth investing in. and C). Understand that they'll still be making less than the value of the best WR's, Defensemen and QB's and are paid according to that standard. Johnson fits the bill for the Cards right now. Gurley fits each category like a glove in LA. Freeman makes the mark in ATL. Shady's on an albatross deal that doesn't really mean much to a Buffalo team with nobody to pay and a rookie/journeyman QB to support. Lamar Miller is in the middle of a deal he's more or less worth in Houston. McKinnon is a gamble for the first qualification for multiple reasons but fits the rest... Bell? He fits the first category... but the last two? Questionable depending on how you feel about a 27 year old with 6 years experience, and LOL hell no. jetstream23
The formula should be draft a rookie RB and ride him for 3-4 years on a rookie deal. If he's the man (a Top 5 type guy) then you give him one big contract that expires at or before 30 years old. Rinse and repeat. The only thing the Cards missed out on is that Johnson wasn't a 1st round draft pick so they never had the leverage of a 4-year contract with a 5th year team option. He's only now heading into his 4th season (final year of his rookie deal) and the mileage is very, very low on him since he missed 16 games last season with a wrist injury. And, if there's any type of season-ending injury I'd want my running back to have it would be something above the waist like a wrist rather than a knee, ankle, etc. Johnson seems like the right kind of guy to invest in here. Lots of runway left.
Tony MaC
Next RB to get a top tier payday? I'm looking at Jordan Howard in Chicago next year. Bears need to support Mitchell. Zeke is another candidate, but he's got a 5th year option so I think they'll wait it out.

Good thing we picked Darron Lee, Christian Hackneburg, Jordan Jenkins and Justin Burris before Howard was selected. Good thing we picked Devin Smith and Lorenzo Mauldin before David Johnston was selected.
Integrity28
This deal should trigger a Leveon deal. I hope. Fantasy football purposes.

MAYBE. he's on contract through next year with his 5th year, so they can wait out another year to see if he's worth another 2-3 years of investment. They could pay him as soon as mid-season this year, before the season next year, or maybe not at all. 5 minutes ago, Beerfish said: Good thing we picked Darron Lee, Christian Hackneburg, Jordan Jenkins and Justin Burris before Howard was selected. Not gonna cry over spilled milk over not drafting a 3rd or 5th rounder every other team passed up multiple times.
SayNoToDMC
It's pretty good for a RB with that guarantee. I think the lesson here is just play baseball if you're a good athlete. Chris Davis will make more than OBJ and he's Chris Davis

Not sure how much of a market there'll be for a 29 year old RB But smart move by DJ anyway. RB's have short careers and are very replaceable. It’s not spilled milk. It’s taking a fresh gallon out of the fridge, dumping it down the drain and then shooting the cow.
varjet
A team with a rookie contract can afford a top RB to support him. Basically a team needs to guarantee him close to 40mm but try and spread it out over 3-4 years.

I think the hope for DJ would be that a Super Bowl contender wants a RB to put them over the top and they throw $$$$ at him on a short 2 year type deal. His final payday. In any case, good for him yesterday. He's a good guy and has a bright future.

That is the issue and the object of the game is to be right more often than wrong. We now have a shiny new franchise QB with a super shaky oline and zero legit oline prospects, and rbs who scare absolutely no one. We could add alvin kamara and kareem hunt and dalvin cook and joe mixon to the list of good looking rbs we let walk on by. I do cry over spilled milk. Our gm prefers jags rbs and no olineman. sec101row23
That’s actually a great contract for both parties. The production that Arizona will get for that money is a great return on its investment.
