New Ads

Recommended Posts

So, as I have mentioned, and as many of you have reported we have had problems with pop up \ mobile redirect ads. I have tried many ad networks and the issue keeps happening. We haven't had paid ads up consistently in some time and unfortunately we do have to change that. We need the ads to pay the software and hosting costs.

I signed up for a paid ad service (we pay them) and we are now testing them out. It is actually AI based, different ads will appear for different people. Right now it is set to show a bunch of ads, but I anticipate pulling that back a bit. I just want to get some data and then I will dig in to what all the options are. Ideally I would like to show less ads to people who are posting (logged in) and more to guests. That is how we had it set up before.

Anyhow, just wanted to give everyone a heads up. So far the ads seem to be high quality and we will tweak things as needed. Thanks.

This probably doesn't belong on main board but some new ad network on this site is misbehaving rendering it all but unusable from my Android phone. A page opens up and starts talking "Congratulations.. " and activating the phone vibrate function. From there it won't easily let me use the back key to get back to JN as it keeps opening windows and dialog boxes.

Even the desktop has a garish rotating ad on the bottom that covers part of the screen which I assume is related. Screenshot below, the ads rotate within themselves and new ads rotate in after a minute or so.

Anyone else having this issue, this is the only site it's happenning on.

I've only gotten them here and I think it started yesterday but today it's been incessant.

I already have a thread about this in the Feedback forum. I mentioned that I would be throttling these back. As I mentioned in that other thread because of issues with other ad networks we haven't been running ads. What that means is the $600 it takes to run this site each month is coming out of my checking account. For some reason google ads won't show on the site. I have spent countless hours trying to get that fixed but google won't say why and I have hired\worked with 5 consultants now, nobody knows what the problem is. Without google ads the site is very limited option wise and although this was never a for-profit venture, I do need to not be paying for it myself.

I understand the frustration and I am very sensitive to it. I tried to be upfront about this but I guess nobody saw the thread in the feedback forum. I am spending a ton of time on this so we can still do what we do, I think the word obnoxious in the thread title just rubbed me the wrong way.  I will send this thread to the company and ask them to throttle things back. As I said, I know this is frustrating.

Sites all over are having this issue and I am trying to find the balance. We will get this fixed.  Thanks.

Totally get it Max.

For the record, I've got no issues with the banner ads, or the ads at the bottom of the page that help pay for the site.  If that's what you gotta do to keep the site running without dipping into your own pocket, I've got no issues with that.  Hopefully most here agree with me on that.

It's the random redirects to the "congratulations!" sites that lock up my phone that frustrate me.  That sounds to me like the ad network doesn't care or check what type of shady ads they run, and that's on them, not you.

Sorry I don't hit the feedback forum ever and wasn't sure what was going on. Obnoxious was in reference to the ad popping up on mobile. It behaves more like a virus than an ad and really makes the site unusable. I've stopped accessing on my phone.

Understand completely about monetization and the ad at the bottom on desktop can be lived with if that is what you need to stop out of pocket expenses, but just fwiw had I not been coming here for 12 years or so I'd have thought the site gave me a virus.

I wonder if google has blacklisted your site for some reason as a porn or phising site, only reason I can think for ads not to show

100% those have to go. I totally agree. Those ads are actually illegal scams and they get by the ad networks. Then they get banned. It is frustrating all around, so I appreciate the patience.

Thank you. Sorry if my response was cranky, I appreciate the patience everyone has here. And those ads are beyond annoying. I do apologize, I didn't mean to let my frustration with the issue boil over. because it isn't anyone here's problem....BUT the good news is I think it is closed to being fixed.

The new ad network is helping us with google. They tweaked the ads that are up now. I haven't checked on mobile but I think there are less now. We will continue to tweak them until we get the perfect balance. They are helping us with the google issue, so I am hoping that is fixed. That would be huge.

Thanks!

No worries, I'd have been more sensitive if I knew this was an issue you'd been battling with for awhile.

Thank you!

On Thursday we will be making the following ad changes:

1. Removing all mobile ads until the redirect problem gets solved

2. Changing the ad layout, there are too many ads on the main forum page, they are all being removed (the ones in between forum topics)

Several other changes being implemented:
