section314
Godspeed to Willie McCovey, who passed away yesterday. For those of us old enough to remember him in his prime, he was beyond feared at the plate. Will always remember the shifts that teams would employ against him in the late 60's and early 70's. I fondly recall going to Shea with my Dad to see the Mets play the Giants. We always got there early to watch him take BP. I can remember one such time when he hit 5 straight pitches off the old scoreboard in right-center field, about halfway up! He was truly special. NJ
I saw him launch more than a couple out of Wrigley as well. RIP Willie
The Crimson King
Mays, McCovey, Jim Ray Hart all in a row against the likes of Jack Fisher and such. Essentially, it just wasn't fair Funny but my recall of McCovey was the same … bouncing balls halfway up the scoreboard at Shea. He hit them so high and far that they came down with snow on them.
