Deebo Samuel skips Bowl, focused on NFL draft

Why do I like a Deebo?  Besides his name and the thought of yelling Go Deebo, Go Deebo over and over again?  I like him because he is a homerun threat no matter how he gets the ball.  He's electric.  1 touch game changer.

Strengths; elite athlete, break away speed, joystick type moves with ball in hand but also physical and will lower his shoulder, one of the best YAC guys in the country.  He runs very crips routes, foot work is incredible, routinely gains separation even vs. press coverage, he knows how to get a CB on tilt.  Great hands, goes and gets the ball at the high point, can make circus catches and jaw dropping plays.

Weakness; injuries riddle his career in college, though he did play this entire season unscaved, it might knock him into the 2nd round.

He might not be the highest rated WR on the board, a few might go ahead of him but IMO he'll be the best of the bunch.  I could see Harry and Brown (who I liked a lot too) go early and before Deebo but Deebo ending up with best career.  Think Evans, Watkins, Beckham Jr.  I'm not saying he's OBJ but I think he posses similar game changing big play qualities.

I'll do a video analysis on Deebo later. P.S., my current favorite WR in the class is D.K. Metcalf. I think he has a little Al Toon to his game.

I like D.K as well.  Can’t wait to see what he look likes during the pre draft process and make sure his neck injury is fully healed

I like Deebo, not sure he is as dynamic speed wise.   For a sub 6’ receiver he is built great though, he’s like 210 pounds.  He’ll probably go middle to end of the 2nd round.

Not a huge fan of Harmon.  He played soft against Clemson and had some bad drops.  Not saying his career is defined by that, but in his big spots he hasn’t produced well IMO.

I thought for sure you'd give me a stamp of approval after what Deebo did to Clemson this year/career.  He always showed up vs. you guys.  This year?  He looked like the best player on the field that day.

There you are, lol.

I keep reading that about his speed, which is bizarre.  He runs away from people with ease.  Maybe one of the situations where his game speed is better than how he clocks. ie Boldin type guy?  because he looks like a flash when he plays.

I like him, don’t get me wrong.  I just think he is more of a 4.5 speed guy, not a 4.38 or 4.40 guy.  He’ll be productive in the NFL, kinda like a Stephon Diggs.  Similar skill sets IMO.

That's a solid comparison.  I keep making the Boldin comparison.  Maybe even a little Enunwa too.  Similar physical type runners with ball in hands who can take a screen or a slat the distance.

Deebo is a little heavier than Diggs, but their skill sets are similar.

My ideal draft would include getting two WRs, a Deebo Samuels and a Hakeem Butler would be nice.  One big outside huge catch radius guy and a versatile slot/outside guy who can take a screen pass 80 yards for a TD.  Those guys would compliment each other so well IMO.

Love it.  Agreed 100%.

Great post. This is the guy I want as well. Somehow he's a day 2 player? Runs away from guys, quickness, weight is more important than height as a receiver. Darnold's a get the ball in the hands of playmakers guy - here's a playmaker.  Home run. Would love it.

I don't see the comparison at all.  I think Samuel is a much better route runner, has better hands, and is more dangerous when the ball is in his hands after the catch.  Smith was more of a one trick pony, Samuel, in my opinion, is a much more complete WR prospect.

Sounds like we really need to find a way to get back into the second round this year. How do you draftniks think we should go about doing it? I don’t think trading a guy like Leo will net us a 2nd round pick, and I’m not sure we can get another 1 and a 2 by trading back from the 5ish spot this year because of the quality of the QB class. Am I wrong here? I’d love it if I am.

Smith coming out of college was known thought to be a track runner who had a decent set of hands tracked the ball well and ran decent routes that is why he was taken early in the second round.

So how does that compare to a guy who's not a track runner, is more of a YAC guy, who has a great set of hands and runs incredible routes?

Smith didn’t run anything well other than 9 routes.  He was soft and had average at best hands.  Deebo is vastly different than Smith.  Other than both play football, they couldn’t be more different.

Where's this thread been hiding.

I'm unsettled on Deebo. High floor... but that ceiling. how tall is it?

The comparison I keep going to is Anquan Boldin.  I know that's lofty but I think they're very similar.

Diggs was good comparison too.

Yo JN draftnik's!  My boy Deebo is straight ballin at the Senior Bowl.  Crazy buzz about him right now.

Check the moves in this article.  That 2nd video, ridiculous.  He's going to be really hard to cover.  Could you imagine him breaking off people at line in green and white?  What???  I really would hate to see those bastads up north get him.  My gawd, in that system?

Deebo Samuel is already showing out at the Reese's Senior Bowl week. After measuring at 5-11 and weighing 216 pounds on Tuesday morning, South Carolina's All-SEC and All-American all-purpose standout took to the practice field and blew by a defender in one-on-ones for a touchdown catch and then showed off his foot speed prior to another catch.

In 23 kickoff returns in 2018, Samuel averaged 24.8 yards per kick, including a 90-yard touchdown return against Ole Miss. He is the program's all-time leader in kick return average at 29.0 yards per return, and holds the school record and is tied for the SEC record with four career kickoff returns for touchdowns. Samuel was Carolina's leading receiver with 882 yards and his 11 receiving touchdowns ranked second in the conference. His 1,478 all-purpose yards, highlighted by those receiving numbers and 570 yards in kick returns, ranked second in the SEC trailing Texas A&M running back Trayveon Williams' 1802. All stats and rankings are prior to bowl stats.

Since the conclusion of the 2018 regular season Samuel has earned first team All-SEC recognition as a wide receiver from Pro Football Focus and SEC coaches gave him first team honors as both an all-purpose performer and return specialist and was a second team selection at wide receiver, and the Associated Press named him to the All-SEC first team as an all-purpose player and the second team as a wide receiver. The Football Writers Association of America named him a second team All-American as a kick returner and the AFCA Coaches named him a first team All-American as an all-purpose performer.

Prior to arriving in Mobile, Ala. for Senior Bowl week, Samuel had been training for NFL Draft preparation at Exos Training HQ in Phoenix, Ariz. He won't be the only player with a Gamecocks helmet on the field as left tackle Dennis Daley is participating as well. The Senior Bowl will be held at Ladd Peebles Stadium in Mobile, Ala. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:30 and the game will be televised on NFL Network.

JiF, how do the Jets land him? Can't see him being there at the top of round 3.

Yeah, agreed.  If they can work a trade down scenario and acquire some 2nd rounds picks or they can trade up into the 2nd round which I think he'd more than likely be worth the value to move up.

The likelihood is slim to none because we never draft the guy I want, well that not's true...I wanted Dbrick, Mo Wilk and Coples (shame) but other than that we never do...but a boy can dream!!!

Looks good from what little I've seen from the senior bowl practices so far.  In 1 on 1's, you could tell his footwork was a step ahead of the other receivers there.  He went up against Ya-Sin, regarded by some as the best CB in Mobile this week, and Deebo beat him 2/3 times by my count.  He did drop one in 11 on 11's yesterday, but all in all looked good.

If I had to compare him to a current player, he reminds me a lot of Golden Tate.
