Joe W. Namath
https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2018/12/06/report-todd-bowles-and-mike-maccagnan-have-been-at-odds-for-years/ Report: Todd Bowles and Mike Maccagnan have been at odds for years Posted by Darin Gantt on December 6, 2018, 4:10 PM EST Getty Images As it turns out, the Jets aren’t just losing football games, they’re coming apart at the seams. According to Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News, the team’s 3-9 record is matched only by the organizational rift between General Manager Mike Maccagnan and coach Todd Bowles. The report suggests that Bowles is almost certainly gone after this season, and that Maccagnan may get a chance to hire a coach more in line with his philosophy. They were hired at the same time to replace Rex Ryan and John Idzik, and while it might seem that they’d be singing off the same sheet of music, they’re painted as being mismatched from the start. The Jets set up a system in which both reported directly to ownership. That led to some natural turf wars, as they often disagreed. Mehta outlines a numbers of points where the teams two top decision-makers diverged on personnel choices. The coaches apparently wanted Maccagnan to trade up to take running back Alvin Kamara in the 2017 draft, but Maccagnan thought it was too high a price to pay to move up (the Saints gave their 2018 second-rounder in the trade). He did give them the wide receiver they were clamoring for (ArDarius Stewart) 12 picks later, but Stewart is already gone. Maccagnan is given credit(?) for the decision to burn a 2016 second-rounder on quarterback Christian Hackenberg, who never played a snap for the Jets, and that might have been because he was no good and it might have been part of a petty point-proving by the coaches who didn’t want him. Regardless the personnel particulars — and it’s important to remember that sources will eagerly promote their own agendas at the expense of the other — having the two at odds serves no one’s best interest. Whether they start with another clean slate or hire a coach Maccagnan trusts, the important part is having a clear organizational philosophy, and building a structure in which they work toward common goals. Joejet
If the Kamara and Hackenberg picks are true that should be the nail in the coffin to dump Mac along with Bowles and start from scratch.

JohnnyLV
All that article does is confirm both most go. It also confirms what we have all thought that Bowles plays or not plays players for personal interest and politics not to win games. Dump both of them. Jack Straw
So Mike Maccagnan thinks Todd Bowles is bad at his job, and Todd Bowles thinks Mike Maccagnan is bad at his job. For the first time ever, they're both right.
rangerous
uh okay. getting ardarius instead of kamara really put them in a hole. the thing about these types of articles is that they're going to be one sided so they bait the other said into saying something equally stupid. this is maneesh's way to start a cat fight. this is not to say mac has made all good moves. he has made some real head scratchers but it also overstates how good bowles and his coaches were at picking players. bowles apparently got players at the exact positions he wanted to beef up. mrcoops
It was definitely an arranged marriage. Everything was set up for Mac to be the GM and Marrone, a guy Mac knows well and trusts, to be the coach. Then Woody got cold feet on Marrone after the Mehta slander campaign, and the rest is history. Would Mac and Marrone have been a more successful pairing? Who knows? But at least they would have been on the same page from the start.
Mike135
Easy solution. Fire Macc. Make Bowles GM and coach.
jetscrazey
"for years?" They've only been here 4 seasons. Exactly when did they turn on each other??? Also, Woody Johnson is a root cause of this problem by messing up the accountability structure. The GM needs to hire the head coach, not the owner. Bleedin Green
That article makes it all sound pretty bad across the board. The Mehta article it cites makes it sounds even worse, even despite Mehta's attempt to make excuses for Maccagnan, which is clearly the company line he's been told to sell. I also couldn't help but laugh when I saw that everyone's new favorite hero-after-fired, Morton, was the one campaigning for Stewart. This entire team is a disaster from top to bottom... they all need to go.
Untouchable
Just over the last 2 months we’ve seen Bowles opt to punt while down by 2 scores late in a game...twice... The guy makes in-game coaching gaffs that are just mind boggling. He also is in control of the gameday roster. Bowles is the one who decided to sit Darnold for the last 3 weeks. Bowles is the one who kept Long out there as the starting center when he was repeatedly sending snaps over Sam’s head and at his feet multiple games in a row. Bowles is the one who refused to bench a guy like Skrine in favor of Roberts/Nickerson... I’m all for completely cleaning house, but I’m not sure why so many are acting as if Bowles is some sort of scapegoat and Macc is the main culprit. Macc certainly has his faults and you won’t see me boo-hooing if they kick his ass out the door as well, but to me it’s clear that Bowles is the head turd in this sh*t sandwich. Bury these fools This actually makes sense and has given me faith/hope in Todd Bowles to pay us back for being a terrible head coach. He can take down Mac with him and throw him under the bus. How is it fair that Bowles gets all the blame and Mac gets off Scott free when there are clear boneheaded personnel moves that Mac made despite input from the coach. Time for things to get interesting in the media. I knew they would need a new scoop or angle. I said it earlier today out of coincidence.

I think this issue is the volume of folks around here who are incapable of comprehending the idea that more than one employee of the NY Jets can suck at their job at the same time. There is literally no evidence whatsoever to suggest either one of them is anything but amongst the very worst at their respective jobs in the entire league. Neither one deserves to keep their job in the slightest. Bowles is already clearly on his way out, that much is obvious. It's just become baffling that it seems very likely we'll be locked into years more of incompetence from Maccagnan, who has done absolutely nothing to deserve the right to have a hand in a few more years of his mess, to go along with a new coach that he'd be of absolutely no help to. Bury these fools LOL So much for the idea that only drafting defensive picks was due to Bowles. The coaches - whom fans suggest never wanted a draft pick who wasn't on D - wanted him to trade up for Kamara and Macc said nope to moving up 4 slots outside the top 2 rounds. Why? Likely because then he couldn't get back those compensatory picks he pissed away the prior offseason; the ones that everyone told me were worthless at the time. Meanwhile not only does he not trade up a few slots in round 3 for a player the coaches want badly (and even worse still, is a stud), but he spends the rest of that draft trading down, trying to recoup picks he squandered with his asinine UFA signings like Matt Forte that canceled out as many as 4 such comp picks. The guy is so incompetent and so stupid it's painful.

maury77
While I would not shed a tear if Maccagnan was let go (especially for a more proven commodity), I can at least point to some instances where he made a good move over the last 4 years. I cannot say the same for Bowles, who has not appeared to improve one iota since he was hired.

Agreed. They have given Mac 3 years of staffing the Jets with tons of money. I don’t believe for a NY minute that the team roster is playoff worthy. So he gets a couple more years with a new coach and then they still suck and we’re in the market for another GM. Wash, rinse, repeat! Dump him and start with a clean slate. joewilly12
Todd Bowles coached this team like a clueless moron. He made many bonehead decisions that cost this team quite a few games. This past Sunday while the team was failing miserably he stood on the sidelines and laughed. How can our owners see him acting in this manner and still employ his services. How can our owners allow failure that lasted for 4 years. Todd Bowles has the personality of a rock when coaching this team little or no emotion good or bad. Todd Bowles will never ever be a HC In the NFL again.
