I read a book about the Mercury program, written by the astronauts, before even the Gemini program really got started. It was fascinating seeing all of the steps the astronauts, engineers, etc had to go through. They added so much redundancy into the systems in the early stages to make sure there were backups to the backups. They also very little idea of what weightlessness would do to a person. It's no wonder we beat the Russians; we took our time and got things right every step of the way.
