RVAJet815
The urgency to get the Mac situation right rachets up even more. Jets project to have *at least* $116 million in cap space https://www.forbes.com/sites/jppelzman/2018/12/12/salary-cap-increase-will-give-jets-even-more-flexibility/#4cd242b133bc
bla bla bla
It almost doesn't matter, we will have more money than we can actually use. I expect us to see extensions for Leo and Enunwa because of this, and it won't shock me if they were for more money than any of us are comfortable with. Drums
Like someone has already pointed out, this helps teams keep players so the draft is more important than ever. FA is not what it was and will be harder to find those studs teams can't afford. This actually seems to hurt a team like us.

Jets Voice of Reason
Analysis fail. How does an increasing cap benefit us at all? It just means no one is in cap trouble, more teams can spend, and whatever good players somehow escape the franchise tag have more options to choose from and makes money less of a differentiating factor. we have like half a roster to fill who are going to demand more money now since there is more available money to play with less supply of good players. The teams that actually win are teams with cap issues (few to begin with anyways) and teams that signed players to extensions before this increase. Hael
I always felt that the value of FA is in the depth that it can bring to your club. You get relatively inexpensive, high character guys that are ok starters but nothing elite or too sexy. In general, for every FA like a Ndamukong Suh or Trumaine Johnson you can get 3 or 4 of these guys. And in general, b/c of the reality of injuries in this league having decent backups ends up being more important than having someone who gets you 3 more sacks. Of course that presupposes that you have enough talent from the draft (eg qb, a few physical mismatches on O etc)
Sonny Werblin
This just assures that the Jets will overpay for average players who will mail in the rest of their career having finally cashed in for all of their hard work. (You can't fight human nature). Also, you can't build a culture through free agency. There is a reason that the free agents Parcells signed were "Parcells' Guys". Whose guys are we gonna sign? All of that money and no one to spend it on for extensions is a damning indictment of the Jets drafting by Mac and his predecessors. Truly pitiful. All of that money and no one to spend it on for extensions is a damning indictment of the Jets drafting by Mac and his predecessors. Truly pitiful. Yeah it really hamstrings the league. The top teams will still have enough money to add a top FA while there are not enough good FAs who are willing to go to a bad teams so the bad teams stay bad or have to overpay for worse talent which ultimately leads to more bad outcomes. I don't know how to fix it. I know people are going to say draft better which is obvious but for a league that wants every team to be 8-8, why would you want to keep the current model of FA? Maybe it's not as obvious to the average fan and they still get the "big name in a new city" and the "new record setting deal" but from a competitive angle it makes no sense, although this is the league that has changed their game for fantasy sports. JustInFudge
It's almost like, depending on building your team through FA is bad strategy. CTJetsFan
Question: when 2019 FA hits and players are tagged (possible example - D. Lawrence), if the Jets sign that player to offer and team doesn't match, do Jets give up 2019 draft pick or 2020 draft pick? Makes me wonder if Macc didn't make a play for Mack or Cooper because he might use picks for players that may be tagged in 2019.

sec101row23
It’s funny how some get so giddy over free agency around here. The reality is that an NFL team will rarely let a player go that they don’t want to. Between the cap increases every year and the ability to re-structure deals, teams don’t let really good players leave. All a $116 million dollars means is that a team will sign a bunch of marginal talent for inflated prices. It would be great if there were some young players on the roster that you wanted to lock up, but those are non-existent. If you don’t draft well you don’t win. Period. It’s just the Jets luck to become cap rich in a time where it doesn’t matter or is a bad thing. We would need 2 more years like last year to even make up for our spending deficit. It’s important (but not realistic) to try and take on bad contracts for picks while we still can but I’m pretty sure those opportunities are going out the window anyways with the increases. This is what a combination of terrible drafting pre Mac and with Mac has done to the team. Perfect storm of minimal talent, no one to resign from pre Mac and no one from 2015-2016 worth resigning which prolongs this drought of homegrown talent that would normally need to be resigning. This is why bringing Mac back is insane and 100% wrong. If you can’t build through the draft, your team doesn’t have a chance. Mac has proved not only that he can’t draft AT ALL(even his hits were at non premium positions), he has proven to be weak and not a leader. Part of this is that the media is lazy and builds up the importance of free agency so they get more clicks and follows. The league builds it up because they want viewers In the month of March. Most of these writers are clueless and have no idea what they are covering on a daily basis.

We will have to settle for “good” not “great” passrushers but pay them like they are great. We will have to pay Bell at least $17mil per. If we don’t do that and grossly overpay, we will not only miss out on adding and decent talent, we will LOSE all the extra cap space that we can’t roll over and surely not reach the cap floor for the 4 year period which I think ends during the 2020 league year. Talk about squandering a young QB on his rookie deal. To be honest, I expected nothing less of this pathetic, incompetent organization that’s run by a bunch of p*ssies with no accountability.
