Who should be the new General Manager?

A lot of talk about who the new head coach should.  Most don’t want another first time head coach, what about another first time GM?

Two guys that could be available are Steve Keim from Arizona and Jason Licht from Tampa Bay.  Both guys are interesting.  Just wondering what people’s thoughts are regarding the criteria for the new GM.

Every insider seems to think Mac is safe.

Mac isn't going to be fired Shouldn't be fired. We're one good offseason away from being a playoff caliber team. If Sam played the entire year the way he played the last two games, we would be a 8-8, 9-7 team. Im not blaming Darnold. He's a 21 year old rookie learning how to play in the NFL.

Just curious - if the worst drafting GM in the league doesn’t deserve to be fired, does anyone?  Ever?

Actually you’re right about that 8-8 thing. We blew a 16 point lead a few weeks ago, then lost leads late in the 4th in at least two games I can remember, Cleveland and yesterday. I really don’t think we’re that far away. Most importantly, Darnold looks like a completely different QB since coming back from the injury. Don’t know what the heck they did with him, but it’s night and day.

Just curious name me one GM that consistently puts out a winning team year after year ? or even has a great draft year after year.... I can think of maybe 2 teams in the NFL that pull that off and that's the Pats and the Steelers and the Pats don't even draft particularly well. Most of what the Pats do is based on a fantastic system and a fantastic QB but sometimes I wonder who was more Important Bill or Tom. It's not easy to field a team of talented players year after year and to really hit that big year or a few years in a row of outstanding drafting is a very rare thing, always has been.

I feel Todd Bowles has had way too much input in who we draft and that seems to be confirmed since we draft so many players on defense in the early rounds we seem to reach in the later rounds to draft offense. You can always see Bowels extremely happy on draft day especially when we drafted 2 safeties he was high fiving everyone in the room.

Macc came to this team when we still had some pieces from our two AFFCG teams and I'm sure he was told to win now and he added some nice players and came close but it was obvious the players Woody thought could push this team forward basically sh*t the bed in a big way. Revis Mangold Cromartie Brick Harris were all pretty much toast and then it was decided to blow it all up. Since the blow up Macc has not drafted particularly well but he has added some good young players from other teams which tells me he can spot talent at the pro level but his scouts have let him down on the college level. I think he deserves one chance..... a year or two to pick a HC and bring in a new philosophy. I think this team has some talent since we have played with most of the teams then just got out schemed in the second half of games. I have a hard time blaming that on the GM

Darnold watched McCown get killed and stopped blaming himself for the team struggles. He watched the games as a spectator and saw TERRIBLE coaching and talent on the offense. He also figured out how he could neutralize the pass rush that the crap o line couldn’t handle by moving the pocket or scrambling right off the bat. He also did a lot of scramble baiting last night and the defense bit hard like Rex on a snack.

I didn’t see a lot of the Buffalo game but last night, the light bulb went off and he found a unique/original way to handle being in a terrible situation and still “find a way”. I was thrilled. I’m not going to kiss his *ss and crown him since he’s had a rough season but I whole heartedly believe it was because of the terrible situation/roster and not really on him. The fact that he found a way to rise above a situation that even a great QB would fail in was extremely impressive an encouraging.

The future is bright. We just have to surround him with the right people and this is why it’s CRUCIAL to bite the bullet and clean house ASAP so we can move forward with the right supporting cast. It’s all about Sam. We live or die by the Sam.

Nah.  You’re an eternal optimist. Never change.

What happens in my fantasy world if we sign Adam Humphries, use picks in 2020 to aquire an A.J Green. Trade down, get a 2nd round pick back, draft a Polite or Sweat, and find a LT who can contribute right away, with that 2nd pick. Forgetting the rest of the draft and free agency, that would take us very far into the category of a playoff caliber team.

I did inject the word fantasy in there. Those are possibilities though. Lewis is a goner with the Bengals. They might be looking to rebuild and get some pics to rebuild with

Really!?

Devin Smith, Lorenzo Mauldin, Bryce Petty,  Christian Hackenberg, Justin Burris, Ardarius Stewart, and Chad Hansen say hello. Seven of the Nine players selected by Mac rounds 2 thru 4  from 2015 through 2017 who are no longer on the team.  Throw in underwhelming first round selections Darron Lee and Leonard Williams, and I fail to see how anyone could arrive at the opinion that Mac has been anything but a terrible GM. Let us also not forget that in 4 years he has drafted only 2 O lineman: Jarvis Harrison (no longer in the NFL) in the 5th round in 2015 and Brandon Shell in the 5th round in 2016.

If Mac is not fired, ownership is clueless (but I guess we knew that already).

If Macc gets fired, one name I would like to see her an interview is JoJo Wooden of the Chargers.  He was with the Jets forever and was let walk under Izdik and has been Tom Telesco's Director of Player Personel since 2013.  The Chargers have drafted incredibly well over that time frame.

Just one name I'd like to see.

I don't think Macc is getting fired though.

Good call.  He’s originally from Connecticut and went to Syracuse.  East coast guy.

I think you’re spot on.

plus, he can always walk into Woody’s office (face it, he’s still in charge) and pull out the Darnold card.

I hope no, pray he hires a guy with HC experience and not some flavour of the month ,up and coming then crash and burn coordinator.

Mac can not hire a HC who has any gravitas because that HC will sniff out Mac's incompetence faster than a 12 year old boy accesses porn on his first smart phone.  If it is up to Mac he will hire a first time HC he believes will be loyal to him.

This is a fair point.

The reason the Jets have the talent now to be a 6-8 win team (there are teams with worse) is that TeamMac has found a way to find some good UDFAs.  But the Draft picks are the worst in the league.

Guys like Roberts, Luvu, Roberts, Hewitt, Anderson, Beachum, etc. actually play pretty well.

The big ticket FAs and draft picks are just awful.

These are not mutually exclusive.  There is no reason they have to give up what they do well to draft and sign FA better.   That is the frustrating part.  If Mac drafted better the last 3 years, this is a playoff team (but maybe they don’t have Darnold).

If you’re right then we’re in for another rough couple of years
