Belichick heaps praise on Sam Darnold: 'Can make all the throws'

For the second week in the row, the Patriots will be facing the rookie quarterback of an AFC East rival.

In Week 16 it was Josh Allen of the Buffalo Bills and in this regular season finale it will be Sam Darnold of the New York Jets when they come to Foxboro. While Allen is still more of project as a passer, Darnold is a bit more polished. The first round pick out of USC is coming into Week 17 after one of his best games of the season against the Packers where he threw for 341 yards and three touchdowns on 24-of-35 passing.

"Yeah, he’s had a couple of them now," Bill Belichick said Wednesday of Darnold's gaudy numbers last week. "Good decisions, accurate, probably better timing and execution in the passing game with his receivers, more yards, more touchdowns, fewer turnovers."

Similar to Allen, Darnold is also a threat with his legs. The Bills QB is more reliant on rushing the football, but Darnold does have the legs to do it if he gets under duress.

"Yeah, Allen ran a lot more than Darnold has, but Darnold’s a big, athletic kid," Belichick continued. "He can certainly move if he has to. He can get out and escape the rush. He’s done that plenty of times. He has a solid skillset, no question about it – good arm, can make all the throws, big, strong kid, hard to get down in the pocket, has good feet, can get out if he needs to.

"Again, his thing isn’t the take off and run, but if he had to run, he can run. You know, he had a big quarterback sneak for them in the game on the fourth-and-1 against Green Bay, made a nice play on that, took it off to the side, saw a gap there, made about 3 or 4 yards on it. So, I’m sure he can do any of those plays they need him to do, and maybe at this point they might call him to do more of those."

Yeah BB always heaps praise on the opponent. There’s some truth to it as what he said about Darnold is true but wouldn’t be shocked if he embellishes at times....

Most of the time he focuses on his opponents strengths....mainly because that’s what he’s trying to neutralize...

A Belichick interview is maybe the most predictable thing in sports.  He would douse Greg McElroy with praise if he was starting Sunday.

At least with Darnold, we know it's the truth.

Bill Belicheck has got to be looking at Darnold play and saying to himself “I wanna coach this guy. Hes humble, young and a stud and there’s no diet named after him” Darnold could extend Belichecks career by another 10 years cause he’s on a sinking ship right now and he knows it.
