Todd Bowles was the one running the Maccagnan drafts!

Todd Bowles was really the GM and controlled the draft during his entire tenure here. Remember tales of how we couldn't judge the 2015 draft because Maccagnan didn't have his own scouts in place? Ha -- that's the true genius of this coverup: it didn't matter who his scouts were because he wasn't actually allowed to make the picks anyway!

Todd Bowles was in fact the real Mr. Green, and he did it in the observatory with the candlestick.

Here's the real story the coach didn't want you to know, but it is so obvious in hindsight:

2015:

After Maccagnan publicly boasted a philosophy of taking the "best player in the draft regardless of position" the Jets draft Leonard Williams at #6. It was hailed by some as a steal and evidence of what a smart GM he was. But we now know the truth: this was Bowles directing Maccagnan to take a player. Bowles didn't want the fast edge rusher on the board. He instructed his GM to take the redundant pick for his roster that inherited 2-3 young players who already fit this mold. Bowles may have run a nickel in Arizona and desired speed on defense, but suddenly he wanted to be DT-heavier on a team that was already DT-heavy. Maccagnan wanted one of the next couple offensive players that went next but Bowles put a stop to it. Since those players turned into massive busts, the PR-wiz GM has allowed himself to take credit for this draft pick after all, but leaves a window open a crack that it was a Bowles pick, whenever the lack of offense is discussed.

A month after commanding his pissboy GM to trade 5th/7th round picks for a veteran pro bowl WR and a RB respectively, Bowles then commanded this underling GM to add another WR with the team's top-40 second round pick. Round 3 Todd "the real boss" Bowles for some reason again totally forgot he likes fast defenders, so he absentmindedly made Maccagnan take a slow edge rusher in dirtbag Lorenzo Mauldin instead of a fast edge rusher in Danielle Hunter. Maybe it's because they had so much in common off the field and such similar personalities that Bowles just had to have him.

A round later, to throw people off the scent of Bowles running the show with a defense-only drafting scheme, the coach forced Maccagnan to go back to drafting offense and trade up for Bryce Petty. After that forced him to go offense yet again with his next pick, OG bust Jarvis Harrison. Then Bowles wanted another NT in round 7 he could bring along slowly, because he'd already forbidden Maccagnan from extending the already top-notch NT he inherited beyond the upcoming season.

When the dust settled, the Jets used a half dozen 2015 draft picks on offense (factoring in the trades for Marshall & Stacy) because that's how Kingpin Todd Bowles wanted it.

2016:

In early/mid April Bowles commanded Maccagnan to engage in pre-draft negotiations to move up to #1 overall for a QB even though 3 months earlier he publicly said Fitz would be the starter if he returned. Maccagnan later admitted he didn't think any of the QBs were worth what it would take to move up that far, but we now know he was just covering for Boss Bowles. It was then Bowles who nixed the trade-up opportunity right after forcing Maccagnan to look into it.

Bowles then repeated this flirtation with trading up for a player on offense after the draft was underway, when Tunsil slipped and was still available when the Giants' picked: he forced his GM to look into taking the draft's top LT, and yet again because of an extra 3rd round pick he refused to part with, Bowles commanded his GM to stay put.

Then when they took Lee at #20 it was not because Lee was the highest player available on Maccagnan's big board or anyone else's. He'd like you to believe that, but we're wise to the real reason. It was because Bowles forced this pick over the sensible and superior pick that Maccagnan would have otherwise made. We know this because Darron Lee doesn't play offense (!) and nobody drafts defenders in round 1 except GM Todd Bowles. Smoking gun right there.

In round 2 Bowles forced Maccagnan to draft Christian Hackenberg. On the surface it may seem otherwise, with Maccagnan being smitten by Hackenberg's supposed potential after spending years in the Texans' organization with Hackenberg's freshman HC. Nope; this was also actually a Todd Bowles move. He ran the show, remember.

Round 3 was not simply the result of a 2nd round prospect at an area of dire need slipping to the Jets' pick. This was really Bowles forcing another pick for the defense. While it may seem that every pick has a 50/50 shot at being defense, in actuality the Jets only drafted players on defense because of Todd Bowles.  Taking a CB in round 4 had nothing to do with cutting Antonio Cromartie or an attempt to create a pipeline post-Revis. Again, it was Bowles.

Then Bowles figured he could go out for something to eat with the Jets not picking again until round 6 (a few weeks earlier, Bowles had forced Macc to trade the team's 5th round pick for Ryan Clady). Temporarily in charge with Bowles a few miles away at Applebees, in round 5 Maccagnan put in a pick of his own, trading the following year's 4th round pick to take Brandon Shell. After returning, Bowles then ordered Maccagnan to select a punter and a WR prospect to fill out the rest of the draft because he forgot it's just defense he coaches, and he gets confused.

2017:

Like 2015, the Adams pick had nothing to do with the team having plans to bypass all non-Trubisky QBs and wait until the 2018 draft (with extensions for Bowles and his lackey GM serving as evidence despite another 5-win season). Nope. The smart team-builder GM wanted a QB or at least an offensive playmaker of some type here, but Bowles overruled him and the Jets took a safety.

But it's round 2 here that really proves Bowles has been making every draft pick: the Jets took another safety. It mattered not that they'd just taken Adams and knew they wanted to dump both Gilchrist and Pryor after lousy seasons; you see that, too, was all Bowles. Maccagnan really wanted to keep them for longer so they could take offensive players instead, but Bowles the player's coach didn't, for reasons only known to himself. Maye is the smoking gun that proves the rest of this story is exactly as outlined right from top to bottom. BTW Bowles was also directing the Saints' draft, forcing them to take DBs with their first 2 picks as well. He's a busy man.

It's also a pack of lies that Bowles and his offensive coaches wanted to trade up for Kamara, after hearing there was movement for him and it was clear he wouldn't fall to the team's 3rd round selection, with Macc refusing to oblige. No. What really was going on is Bowles wanted to get back the compensatory picks he forced Maccagnan to flush down the toilet with his 2016 UFA additions. It is a weird connect-the-dots that the team that did trade up a few slots for Kamara was the team the Jets' new OC just came from. Rather it was actually Maccagnan who wanted to move up for the dual-threat RB prospect after locking the team into starter contracts for older RBs Forte & Powell the prior offseason. It is what it is: Bowles saw Kamara plays offense and we know Bowles hates offense. Since the GM took his marching orders from the HC, poor Macc was forbidden from trading up.

Bowles really wanted Smoot at #70, but when Jax took him at #69 Bowles commanded Macc to trade down. Then he forced Macc to take bust WRs and TE with his next 3 picks just to prove to fans the futility of using draft picks on passing game offense. Machiavellian, that Todd Bowles.

2018:

Still in charge of the draft, and fresh off his extension, Bowles forced Maccagnan to make an early trade-up to #3 to be in position to draft the 3rd-best QB prospect. Macc was willing to move all the way up to #1 but Bowles stepped in and said, "Dude, a QB is a QB. They're all the same to me, so just make sure we get one to feed the media and fans and call it a day. If the one I actually want somehow slips that's great, but really it just doesn't matter because none of them play defense."

Then the next pick after Darnold was defense, again proving it was a Bowles pick. It's another DT because we know that's the position Bowles always wants in order to keep his defense fast. He also needed a new 300-pound DLman because Maccagnan cut ties with Mo when Bowles wasn't looking, so now there was this need. Bowles then instructed Maccagnan to draft TE Herndon. No wait he plays offense that can't be right. OK what happened was that Bowles was late to the draft on day 3, so Maccagnan was finally allowed to make a pick all on his own for the first time since Brandon Shell. After Bowles finally got there, he was furious. In the next couple rounds he forced 2 more defenders onto the team. Again, we know they are Bowles picks because they play defense. Plus Nickerson is a DB at that, and you guessed it another 300+ pound DLman. So obvious.

Then right at the close of the pre-season the Jets made an offer for Khalil Mack. Also Bowles. Maccagnan told Chris Johnson on him, and after opening their hearts over hours of tears and hugs and Grey Goose cosmos, finally CJ saw the light. If the Jets suck again he would keep Maccagnan and rid him of being victimized by Bowles. This change in the balance of power allowed Maccagnan to rescind the offer to Oakland so he could go after his true gift and passion in 2019: drafting stud offensive playmakers and linemen.

Aftermath. 2019:

After staying away for this long, and seeing the young QB get injured as a rookie behind the ragamuffin OL Bowles forced upon the team, we'll finally see a day 2 pick spent on the OL for the first time since 2013. This correlation will further prove that the culprit was purely Bowles all along. The Jets will become Superbowl winners now that the real talent evaluator will finally be permitted to draft the good prospects.

Beat writers admittedly read these boards and I will guarantee you that SE’s comprehensive work in checking the Maccagnan futility has impacted how they covered both Bowles and Macc this season, and it’s been important also to ensure that none of you halfwits are running to the FAN to give Maccagnan cover. Great work, @Sperm Edwards

They’re going to fire Todd Bowles within 48 hours and they’re going to try and hang all of Macc’s personnel failures around his neck on the way out the door. Sperm knows this and is pre-empting that stupid idea from gaining traction among the readership.

Funny? What are you talking about?

This is serious news, and apparently the belief is this is an accurate portrayal of history.

I am merely helping out those that know the truth, lest anyone believe Maccagnan shoulders blame for these drafts.

All picks made on defense were Todd Bowles. Unless you like the pick, in which case it's Mike Maccagnan.

#truth #history #accuracy #reasonability #likelihood #logical

What?  SE just provided a summation of what we all knew all along.  Big Macc FINALLY free the chains of oppression!

I could see a coach wanting final say over personal moves but no coach really wants to do th GM’s job for them. They want some degree of competency so the coach can focus on coaching and not add even more to his place.

I really don’t know what to expect. Does a coach want to come here and have say over Mac or will they avoid us because they would have to be WAY to involved in roster management which may impede their ability to coach. I have no idea. Time will tell.

Unquestionably, there will be some coaches not as dumb as ownership/this fanbase who will avoid this job because of the job Macc has done.

Jets only selling point is “Look, Sam Darnold.”

I fail to see the sense in putting this at risk.

I could see it if our drafts were loaded with studs outside the top 6 overall picks. Then he'd be an obvious asset as a talent evaluator. Of course this is the exact opposite.

But what am I saying? The bad picks were Todd Bowles. :)

I will say this about the apparent Todd influence on draft picks—everyone they picked was of the humble, yes-sir/no-sir variety of milquestoast self-starters. Which, in itself, isn’t a bad thing, but it suggests that one of the prerequisites for getting picked by the Jets is that you weren’t going to give Todd a hard time. As we’ve seen, Todd is allergic to punishing players and wants all of his players to act like they’re his foster kids, which isn’t always conducive toward getting the most out of them.

I think it’s a completely unecessary risk and have been pounding the table to fire him for this exact reason. I’m just preparing for what will likely happen and not for whay should happen.

It’s frustrating and if it’s official that he survives Black Monday(looks this way), I will officially adjust expectations MUCH lower and just root/hope for the best. Can’t have hope with incompetence and futility.

With Bowles out of the picture Macc will have his best draft since he's been here. Last year he got the Franchise QB, top 5 NFL TE, our Nickel CB in Nickerson (who Bowles refuses to play over FLAG Skrine, 2 rotational Dlineman & Cannon (who the new coach will use as a part time weapon on Jet sweeps, lined out wide as a WR, and a great gunner on specials or as I like to say (Not a waste of a roster spot).

Outside of that 1st rounder, we're going on the offensive. FINALLY. I'm so looking forward to Black Monday. Bowles has been an anchor weighing down this entire franchise. He's a terrible coach, he's lost control of players every year he's been here, his defensive pal Rogers is probably the worst DC the Jets have ever had, you guys talk about continuity & its importance & this guy has fired 3 OCs in 4 years, and we wonder why our offense SUCKS! I believe that GMs can get better, scouts can get better, and I believe you learn as you go along. Why can't Macc get better & have a killer draft in 2019?

Starting all over again is stupid. The most important pc to the puzzle is Sam Darnold & the 2nd most will be the next Head Coach.

Look I’m trying to put and optimistic/hopeful spin on keeping Mac but I can’t. Let’s say they completely neuter Mac as a “selling point” to attract a head coach and they give the coach final say and input on whether to keep Mac after 2019(I know this is REALLY stupid). Coach has an ok season/team looks “meh” at best. The Jets Fire Mac after 2019. What GM in their right mind comes here knowing that it’s not “his” coach, coach didn’t set the world on fire and have a great year, and will automatically be in an awkward power structure where they fight over final say.

Retaining Mac is ridiculous and causes so many problems. It’s not worth the blind “hope” that he does better after proven that at his absolute best, he is still not good. I truly believe that keeping him will set us back for 3 years minimum and not just because of his moves. The bizarre half measure/power structures that it causes will screw up the synchronous hiring of coach and GM.

What’s more bizarre is that our own team went through this with Rex and Idzik and had to blow it up after only 2 years which made us look terrible. Why we would undo our perception of being patient and just making the right move this offseason, is something that I cannot understand for the life of me.

An interesting observation and it probably speaks to mccags and bowles’ initial evaluation of the roster when they inherited it.  Remember at the time, geno smith was slated to be the starting qb.  The leaders on defense were Sheldon and Wilkerson and revis, 3 of the most selfish players you’ll find.  Then mccagnan brought in a bunch of washed up veterans like Brandon, decker, ivory, fitz, etc. who weren’t going to be here more than a season or two.  Clearly a premium was placed on bringing in guys who would become the next gen of leaders.

Ironically, the locker room politics sorted itself out right away when IK socked geno.  So in hindsight bowles lucked out b/c dealing with geno as a starter all season and perhaps beyond would have been way more difficult than having fitz for 2 seasons and mccown for 1 and darnold for 1.

Actually even with enunwa out the offense has outperformed the defense badly the past few weeks.  Darnold has emerged as the team’s premiere playmaker and i expect them to move the ball well today though I also expect the refs to ensure the pats get a bye.

Why can't Macc get better and have a killer draft? Because a Leopard don't change it's spots, what you see is what you get, you can't fix stupid, the more things change, the more they stay the same, and if it walks like a duck, looks like a duck, sounds like a duck, it's a duck. That clear it up for ya?

So you admit mac has absolutely no clue what he is doing in drafts, he just goes off the advice of Todd Bowles?! ?that is like being dumb enough to cheat off the kid he gets all F’s in class ?‍♂️

If they need to neuter him to be a selling point, how is his presence a selling point?

It’s not. There is nothing normal or good about this situation. In fact, keeping Mac and making him in charge of the coach makes WAY more sense than the scenario that I just laid out. You only keep him if he has done well and you have confidence in him. Not to be an equal or below the coach.

Mac hasn’t done well or instilled confidence. We have a reason to fire him and no one would criticize us. It would actually make us more attractive for coaching candidates. Even if we had a backup plan/worst case scenario GM like Heimerdinger, it would allow us to approach things with a true clean slate.

I understand that the team didn’t want to fire anyone this quickly but Bowles made that impossible. They are stuck with a less than ideal choice but I would think that you have to FIRE MAC as well for the appeal of the coaching position at the very least. If they keep Mac, they might as well keep Bowles and give them both 1 more year. THEY ABSOLUTELY CAN’T or SHOULDN’T do that and I only say this because I think even that would be better long term than this bizarre half measure that we are about to witness that surely sets us back.

The only defense of Macc for the past 4 years is that he doesn't actually do anything.  So, I'm not sure how neutering him now represents a change.

But yes, logistically, this is so problematic, as the only option now is to give Macc, possibly the least deserved extension since Mark Sanchez.

To be clear, Sperm is saying the same as many early-doubters, but with 5,000 extra words for style points.
