In My Own Words: Sam Darnold on His Rookie Season

Even though the season didn’t go the way we wanted it to, I’m really excited about this team and where we’re headed.

The year has gone by so fast.

It feels like forever ago my first pass went the other way for six in Detroit. Actually, after I threw that pass, I think I was smiling as I was walking back to the sideline. I was just like, "Man, of course this happens to me." It’s the worst possible thing that could’ve happened, but I was really proud of the way we responded. I think it showed a lot about us.

We didn’t win as many games as we wanted to, but I feel like I got a lot out of it. Coming into this year, I had big expectations to win and do well. I expected to have some adjusting to do and learn on the run as I got used to the NFL game. It’s different, a lot different than college.

I definitely wasn’t as consistent as I wanted to be, especially in the beginning of the season. We went on a two-game winning streak, we were 3-3 and went on a losing streak, which sucked. Then I got hurt and threw four picks against Miami, and then I had to sit out and not play. It killed me not being able to make up for it.

I think I played a lot better after I got back. I thought the offense played better in the final stretch, which makes me feel optimistic about where this team is headed. I love the guys in the locker room. I’m just very excited about where we’re going and love all the guys for all the hard work they’ve put in day in and day out.

Everyone here is a part of a little family and it’s awesome to just be able to come here and feel a part of something. Yes, we haven’t done as well as we wanted to, but I think the coolest part is getting up every single day and looking forward to coming to work. I think that’s really cool.

For me, moving forward, it’s about continuing to grind and continuing to stay ready and play well. I think the biggest thing is staying consistent because then you know the coaches know exactly what they’re getting out of you and your teammates know exactly what they’re getting out of you day in and day out. I think that’s the biggest thing when it comes to continuing to be a good quarterback at a high level.

I think there were a lot of good things that we can look back on this year and say, "Okay. We need to continue to do that." Obviously, there are some things we shouldn’t do moving forward. I think as long as we continue to have a core of leaders that can tell guys what to do and what not to do, tell guys this is how we do things and we don’t do this around here, as long as we have guys that can set the culture, I think as long as we keep that core group tight, we’re going to be all right.

To the fans: You’re awesome. You can really give it to us when we’re not playing well, but I love that. It really fires me up and makes me want to play better. I know it makes the guys in the locker room want to play better and play well and win every single Sunday because of it. It makes it fun to go out there and play football because you’re really invested in this team, in this organization.

I’m already excited to get back to work because I do feel like I was playing at a pretty high level. We have unfinished business. Let’s attack the offseason, come back in the spring and then in the fall start stacking some wins.

This organization deserves it, the fans deserve it, this whole Jets community deserves it. We’re looking forward to doing that.

Sam just has the makeup to succeed here in the Big Apple...

I hope very deeply that he can get it done here....he will be immortal if he can pull it off

I think he will be fine. Let’s put it this way, Even in a year where he is the youngest player to start, has little to no talent around him, bad coaching he still gives even the most pessimistic jet fan hope with the way he played at the year went on.  Next year the team will have more talent and if Sam plays like he has the last few weeks he is gonna be solid gold

I originally thought this was @Jetsbb just talking about Sam in His own words so I almost didn't read it. lol   Who needs another one of OUR thoughts on Sam Darnold at this point huh?

I'm so glad I read it and thanks for posting it @Jetsbb!!!  This kid gives me hope. I am sure he is at the center of all of the HC candidates desire to interview here. He makes the NY Jets attractive. I love what he said and how he sees the future.  I'm all in on Sam Darnold!

I still can't believe we have a friggin QB!!!!

My favorite quote all year (paraphrasing):

Reporter: how are you dealing with the NFL season being longer than college?

Sam: not a big deal, I love playing football. I love coming in and grinding every day.

Now if the lingerie league players said that, the ratings would have gone through the roof.  Missed opportunity...

Not that it matters at all to anyone except us morons arguing about him, but I wonder if this means he was hurt earlier in the game than we thought.

Damn, what an awesome attitude.  Didn't we have someone once say something instead like "don't boo us, it makes us play worse" or something?  Darnold is definitely going to be a fan favorite...
