Steve Mariucci: Jets QB Sam Darnold Is Going to Be 'Dynamite'

You should have already seen Darnold make some throws Mayfield can’t, along with many other NFL QBs.  And I’m not saying Mayfield isn’t a very good pro QB and an excellent prospect whose game should get even better.

I’m being as objective as possible too, you already hear talk that Darnold is “Carson Palmer in the pocket and Tony Romo outside of it”, you see JJ Watt look him dead in his eyes and with much respect say “you’re going to be a great pro”.

This Kid is “The Natural”, and no disrespect to Mayfield, I’ll take Sam Darnold over him every day of the week.  He’s made some throws already Joe Namath couldn’t make, forget about every other QB the Jets have ever thrown out there.

If you can go to the newyorkjets.com website and watch the last video they made of Darnold.  Shows him going back to shoot hoops in Southern Cal, nails 30 foot jumper after 30 foot jumper, as though he can do it with his eyes closed.  Some kid’s father who coached him at baseball said he was “always winning the Homerun hitting contests”.

This is a very very special athlete, Sam Darnold, that doesn’t come around too often, he can fire bullets if he has to or drop a ball into a tea cup from 60 yards while putting air under it, his pocket presence already seems incredible, put some decent teammates around him, not the bottom of the league garbage that’s mostly there now, give him just average coaching, not some of the most horrific coaching I’ve ever seen pro or college...LOOK OUT....give him better than that...it won’t even be fair for the rest of the league.

Hey, I want Darnold to be the best QB in the league, I’m a Jets fan, and he’s the type of kid it’s impossible to not like or root for. I stated in my post how impressed I was by his rookie season. I just don’t get all weak in the knees hearing Romo or Mariucchi give him a compliment, and the fact remains Mayfield was better this year, by a wide margin. Compliments to Sam are fine, but did you hear Romo gush about Mayfield “playing like a veteran” in the Ravens game? He was saying how Mayfield “elevated the play of Perriman and Coleman” from bust status to their draft potential and “throws them open?“ My point is, guys like Romo are going to gush about all these guys, they’re elite rookie QBs. Depending on where you live, you’re going to hear Marriuchi talk up your guy. One last thing. I like the Sam hoops story, but again, they’re all great athletes, and probably the best 3 sport stars their high schools have ever seen, so not surprising. BTW, I really think that Sam becomes a better QB then a cross between Palmer and Romo. I think you’re selling him short with that comparison...

Steve Mariucci’s word holds more weight than any other former player, coach or analyst if you were to ask me. This is not just another ringing endorsement to me.

Also important to note that you have never heard guys with this much notoriety, respect, success, knowledge of QB’s say these kinds of things about any other Jet QB after their first season...or at all!

Romo, Mariucci, Aikman, JJ Watt..man there’s more that I can’t remember but the list goes on and on.

this, this is very exciting as a fan of a team that’s best QBing has been from a few years of Chad, 8 games of Favre, 1 year of Vinny and a career year from the likes of Ryan Fitzpatrick.

Mooch got the job done with Jeff Garcia.  Matt Millen then proceeded to ruin Mooch's coaching career.  Luckily for Mooch, he's great on TV.

I don't see how you can say Mayfield was so much better and it wasn't even close. Who exactly did Darnold have to throw to? Who did Mayfield have? Mayfield had more turnovers than Darnold. Mayfield had 19 turnovers (14 picks and 5 fumbles lost) Darnold had 15 pics and 3 fumbles lost - so 18 Turnovers). I don't know, when I watch both play I'm really glad we have Darnold - much more natural a thrower of the football. I like Mayfield too, but his ceiling is not nearly as high IMO.

And how can you compare the two guys?  Baker is 2+ years older.  Darnold won't be the age Baker is now until 2020.  Of course he's going to be behind right now.

All good points.  Time will tell who becomes the best of the group.

I just started seeing, when the light started coming on for Darnold, after coming back from injury, a QB that will be practically unstoppable in the future.  I felt the same way about Mahomes and that’s why I wanted the Jets to draft him at 6.  Am I right all the time? No.  Then again I rarely see what I am seeing in the way Darnold played toward the end of the season.

I agree, he looked great. I was so glad to see his improvement this year. I just think some people go way overboard exaggerating how much he accomplished. I get that we want him to be great, and we’re all excited about his future, but he’s not there yet. I really think he’ll get it done though, which is a great feeling to have!

Mayfield was better but his team is much farther along in the rebuild process. That's not on Sam, it's fine. We never had a chance to pick him either so who cares anyway?

They are farther ahead because they have a much better GM than the Jets.

Most importantly, don’t look at his stats, he was forced to play practically 1 vs. 22 lots of weeks, not to mention having the WORST coaching in the league, and he almost single handedly took down Houston, Aaron Rodgers.

You see the throws, into the tightest of windows, to receivers who can virtually never get any separation.  I see how he has already adjusted his delivery and made it way more compact than it was in college (I saw lots of his games at SC and the delivery is like night and day), which experts claim should take multiple years to do, if it can even be done at all.  The fumbling issue he had, practically gone...at the Pro level.  He’s done all this already and he’s only 21.  And you can tell he’s going to consistently work at his craft, until he is the Best.

Sky is the limit.  And I’m not saying that because of a Jet fan bias.  If he was on any other team I’d say the same thing, and would wish he was a Jet.

For about 15 min there it looked like Kenny O might have the better career. It was exciting to watch him with Toon, Walker, Shuler and Mcneil. Good times. That's the era when I really became a fan.
Me too

Comparing Mayfield to Darnold is absolutely ridiculous at this point. 2 years & many games of experience has Baker ahead of Sam regarding both players development.

Both QBs are Outliers, but Baker has played QB much longer than Sam. Once Sam reaches that plateau of reps & experience that move certain athletes into that next level of play though, look out! I just QBs by the eye test, and Darnold will be a nightmare for opposing fans. You guys have all been there when your defense gets no pressure, there are certain QBs that you just know when they get time & let it rip it's usually a completion down the field.

Thats where Sam was in those last 4 games. Here's the difference though between the 2, Mayfield was doing it with better blocking up front, a complementary run game, and a top WR in Jarvis Landry, a 2nd year very good TE in Njoku, and a defense making stops & giving him more opportunity to find his rhythm.

Darold was playing QB with a poor Oline, no running game, the highest % of 3rd & longs, no number one WRs, and had to sit on the sideline for long periods of time as his defense gave up third down after third down. This kid is going to be SPECIAL when he has some of the luxuries Baker Mayfield enjoyed this year.

Mariucci does not do a lot of hyperbole stuff. This piece is probably an extension of the other piece prior to the TNF game, where he basically said the same.

Even the final game Sam made a few throws that were for long gainer, TD, PI that we're dropped. Sam could be great, I hope.

That 40 yarder along the sideline to Cannon was dropped over the defender on right onto his hands. Herndon should have come down with a TD & Anderson was mugged by a guy hitting him early running right up through his chest & never once turning his head (he literally pulled a Kyle Wilson) but according to Dan Fouts it was a great defensive play...wait WUT?

Romo would have been all over that PI, lol. I think the league has even told Tony to tone down the call ridicule.

Oh yeah all those happened, those were sick throws but when you have a defense that already sucks and than undermanned it was easy. If people are looking at that Pats win as a statement for the playoffs they will be disappointed...

Pats are a well coached defense. The fact that Sam made so many plays as undermanned as they were on offense was tremendous! Backup LG, backup RT, no Enunwa, no Kearse, we had 2 UDFAs playing on offense & a 7th rounder, Anderson, Burnett & Cannon!

You show me any other NFL team that was featuring that last Sunday!

Oh I agree. I brought this up since it kind of got lost. I know it was the last game but it's not like Sam didn't show much considering the situation.

Thank you so much for this post.

Folks are quick to dismiss what Darnold has done.  Think how many times Darnold created time to throw with his legs this year.
