Dwayne Haskins: 'I'm hoping' to play for Giants, later tweets 'best believe I'ma win a Super Bowl'

Dwayne Haskins declared for the draft this week and by doing so pretty much guaranteed he'll be the first quarterback selected in the 2019 NFL Draft. The Ohio State standout finished his final season in Columbus with 50 touchdowns and just 8 interceptions, and even if Justin Herbert didn't decide to return to Oregon for his senior season, there's a good case that Haskins still would've been the first franchise quarterback off the board.

In our latest mock draft, we had Haskins going fifth-overall after the Jaguars traded up two spots to grab him -- just one spot ahead of the Giants, who you could argue desperately need a quarterback too. And when Haskins was apprised of this last month by the Chicago Tribune's Teddy Greenstein (via PFT), and told it would be a good landing spot for him, here's what he said: "I'm hoping for that too."

By Monday night, as Clemson was putting the finishing touches to their convincing National Championship win over Alabama, Haskins tweeted this:

“Even though I didn’t get a chance to play in the cfb playoff, best believe ima win a super bowl... ?

Now the question becomes: Do the Giants make a play for Haskins? General manager David Gettleman said last week the team is still in the "evaluation process" and while he wouldn't commit to  Eli Manning for 2019 he did say the 38-year-old quarterback "can still make NFL throws -- he's still got it."

But if the Giants aren't interested, plenty of other teams will be, starting with the Jaguars (No. 7 pick), Broncos (No. 10) and Dolphins (No. 13). And since the teams picking in the top 5 don't need a franchise quarterback (Cardinals49ersJetsRaidersBuccaneers), there could be a lot of movement at the top of the draft board between now and late April. A year ago, the Bills and Jets moved up to get Josh Allenand Sam Darnold, respectively. Haskins is a better prospect than Allen at this stage of his career, and probably on par with Darnold. New York took Darnold third overall and Buffalo took Allen four spots later.

And if teams fall in love with Haskins -- and it'll be hard not to based on his 2018 season -- he'll be one of the first players taken.

"He is a leader and understands his role. He is a distributor. He is a servant. Everybody wins and looks good together," Haskins' mother, Tamara, told Greenstein last month.

Dwayne Sr. added: "He is an alpha male of alpha males. He doesn't overwhelm you or try to manipulate you to believe in what he does. He will say two or three words and then he goes out and represents it. Then you follow him and you want to respond to him.

"He doesn't need to kick over a Gatorade cooler. Doesn't need to throw his helmet down. If you watch his mannerisms when he quarterbacks, it's with confidence. He has been around it. He has NFL friends that mentor him. He is not your average college football player. He does not get overwhelmed. He is emotionally intelligent. He is built for this moment."

HA! so dumb that they didn't take a QB last year.  BArkley is fun and all, but i hope Sam is tearing it for 15 years, right in front of the giants, while they go through QB hell...it's only fair

I can’t wait to trade back to another team hat selects Haskins and laugh at those loser giant fans. That would make the draft for me. I don’t even care who we pick after that happens.

Unlike last year there is only one or possibly two QBs worth moving up for.  So it seems unlikely that a team will trade up to #3 before the draft.  That leaves Mac with the option of waiting for the draft and hoping someone moves ahead of them so Bosa or Williams falls in to his lap, or he gets a partner to move back when they're on the board.  The most likely team for that are the Jags who have the #6 pick and 3 picks on day 2.  Move back to #6 and you can still get a great DT, OLB or Greedy Wiliams and have 2 more picks on day 2.

It will only look dumb if they fail to secure a franchise QB this year or next year. Barkley is going to be a nightmare to defenses if the Giants find a QB who can get the ball to Beckham, Sterling, and Engram.

I'm not complaining. They chose Barkley over The Darnold.

Giants, Jaguars, Broncos and Dolphins should be killing each other to get to Haskins.  IMO TB should be in it as well but they think they can still salvage Winston.  Problem is no one will trade up to 3 yet for fear that SF will let someone get ahead of them.  For that to happen, there would need to be at least one more top QB prospect (like Mayfield/Darnold).  It's going to be a long wait.

Alternatively, one of them might be thinking they can wait 2 more years for Trevor Lawrence.

Hate to say it but Tua did not help himself last night.  He was helpless for 3 quarters.  He'll be fine if he bounces back but he was also lucky, because if Hurts had been able to move down the field, that would have left a mark.

If any of those teams truely believed this kid was a franchise guy they would have already moved up to the first overall pick.

Sitting pretty for the trade up from QB desperate teams ?

Actually, we're sitting in a horrible spot. SF is ahead of us, and also isn't taking a QB. So the #3 spot can be leaped if a team thinks they need to go higher then the 4 and 5 spots, which they probably don't… No reason at all to trade into our spot.

except why would they pay extra just for the sh*t of it to go up to 2 when neither SF nor NYJ need a QB?

Lets say they went 4 or 5 they'd be worried about someone else jumping to #3 and they'd be screwed. Wouldn't they also then be worried if they went to 3 that someone could leap them to 2? If you're paying all it would take to move to 3, you might as well pay a tiny bit more, be definitely safe, and go to 2.
