Days after parting ways with outside linebackers coach Joey Porter, the Pittsburgh Steelers continue to shake up the coaching staff.

Head coach Mike Tomlin announced Monday that running backs coach James Saxon would not return for the 2019 season.

"I have made the decision to not renew the contract for running backs coach James Saxon," Tomlin said in a statement released by the Steelers. "We would like to thank James for his efforts over the past five years, and we wish him the best in his future coaching endeavors."

Saxon joined the Steelers in 2014 after a three-year stint in the same position with the Minnesota Vikings, where he coached Adrian Peterson. He also previously coached running backs for the Miami Dolphins (2008-10), Kansas City Chiefs(2001-07) and Buffalo Bills (2000).

With Saxon, the Steelers ranked 16th in rushing in 2014, 16th in 2015 and 14th in 2016, but slipped the past two seasons to 20th in 2017 and 31st in 2018.

Pittsburgh's ground game suffered a setback in 2018 when two-time All-Pro running back Le'Veon Bell elected to sit out the regular season instead of signing his franchise tender. In Bell's absence, second-year back James Connerstepped in to rack up 1,470 total yards and 13 total touchdowns.

Uh, a setback?? Sounds like this dude did a heckuva job to me. Even their third stringer ran for almost 300 yards at 4.6 a clip when Connor sat out a couple games.

Yeah. Not sure I'm ready to give this guy all the credit but whoever has been the starting RB for the Steelers the last few years has looked much better than anyone expected..

I wonder if this guy was “Aiding and abetting the enemy (Bell)” in Tomlin’s eyes?

He coaches well from what I read on the stat sheet. The OL plays a big role. Hopefully they fire the OL  for us to hire!?

Fixed it for you...

As Patriot Killa alluded to, when Conner (1470/ 13 TD) went down for a few games, next man up Jaylon Samuel (TE/RB) also ran well (4.6 avg) and 3 receiving TD's.

He would be a nice addition.

Get em’ on board. I really like this idea. Jaylon Samuel was a beast.

A drafted him as well in my mock. Just saying. I killed my mock.

Anyway. I don’t want anything to do with Bell or Brown but all for signing Saxon as long as Gase and Dobad listen to him.

So the point of the thread is not to snag this guy?

Not sure how you arrived at that conclusion. Every post supports bring Saxon is as the RB coach. I'd even give him oversight of the TE's as a bump in responsibility and pay. Need to keep these positional coaches motivated and moving up the food chain.

The Steelers RB production is more a product of the O line and outside threats. You can't put 8 in the box and the O line is littered with high draft picks. I'm not saying the RB coach is not a good coach, but what is his success outside of Pitt?

And Bell doesn't care who his RB coach is. He is going to the team that pays him the most.

Kareem Hunt is the better play for signing a free agent RB.

Forget Bell!!!  I mean we always complain about overpaying headache players yet the same people want to give Bell an insane amount of money.  Focus on the oline like the Colts did

Good chance Hunt is suspended for the entire year.
