Jets' pursuit of former Packers coach Mike McCarthy collapsed over staffing issues

There was always a very strong possibility that former Packers coach Mike McCarthy would sit out the 2019 season, as previously reported, and after his negotiations with the Jets fell apart that is precisely the case. League sources said the Jets were very interested in the former Lombardi Trophy winner but talks broke off over staffing issues.

McCarthy rebuffed strong overtures from the Cardinals before the end of the regular season, as reported, and he and the Browns were never going to be a match, something both sides knew throughout the process. There was little mutual interested and he never seriously spoke to Browns general manager John Dorsey – who he worked with in Green Bay – about the job, sources said. The Jets were his most serious pursuer, but even then it was always going to be a bit of a long shot.

McCarthy harbored some concerns about the structure and composition of the Jets front office, sources said, though he did have a productive interview with ownership and team officials. However, as the Jets began deeper conversations with their finalists for the job, it became clear he was not going to mesh with their direction. Specifically, sources said, the Jets asked to see a list of a potential coaching staff so that they could peruse and consider the options. McCarthy complied with the request but began to have reservations about the process at this point, sources said, and was unsure if this would in fact be a match.

McCarthy was always going to be very judicious about any job he took, with the Packers owing him roughly $9 million next season, according to sources, and with his family so entrenched in the Green Bay area. He was blindsided by his in-season firing, according to confidants, and it was going to take the perfect pitch to land him on the heels of that. Talks broke down essentially over the issue of staffing, sources said, before it reached the stage where the job was outright offered to McCarthy.

The Jets were also deep in talks with Baylor coach Matt Rhule at the same time, and he ultimately withdrew as well over staffing issues; Rhule wanted to bring a staff of primarily college coaches, which the Jets had concerns with. Adam Gase, who accepted the position, will have a staff of experienced NFL coaches coming in with him, which could include a former NFL head coach as the defensive coordinator – Gregg Williams is among those under consideration.

McCarthy will be watching film and following the league closely in 2019, and will also be fully able to interview with teams at any point in the season should clubs continue the trend of in-season firings.

Organization full of scrubs! Their first two options told em’ “GET LOST” when they tried to hand them this bogus deal of putting a staff together for them, so they settled with Gase

This also coincides with the tweet that the Jets wanted Gregg Williams on board from the very beginning.

How can the fans who didn’t like the hire huddle around this guy if the team looked at him like a last resort? This is maddening.

So basically, the Jets simply went with the guy most willing to be their whipping boy.  That's really just fantastic.

Or it’s possible that the Jets saw names like Joe Philbin and Ben McAdoo on McCarthy’s proposed staff and were turned off.

That’s totally within the realm of possibility. McCarthy has a track record of stubbornness and failure to learn from past mistakes.

So basically the sojf fanbase believes whatever they read, provided it's a negative take on the Jets front office/ownership.

This could be McCarthy leaking info to save face but there is no chance you'd ever accept that plausible version of events

Yeah, yeah McCarthy is unemployed today because that's what he really wants. He's just too good for every team in the NFL. Poor guy.

But don't you worry, he'll be"locked and loaded" next year, right???

Not only will the GM and HC be reporting bilaterally to Johnson, in a separate but equal parallel structure, but now it looks like the HC and the DC will be running their side of the ball exclusively, as separate but equal authorities, and reporting biilaterally to…Johnson?

?

It's funny that on the one hand this organization is full of scrubs on the other hand it's the only organization McCarthy wanted to work for.

How do you guys wrap your little heads around that one?

Are you suggesting it's more reasonable to believe things you personally fabricate?

Sounds an awful lot like damage control out of McCarthys camp too.

Wasnt McCarthy, was the staff.  McCarthy had issues with the Jets FO structure and composition.  But he wanted the job, was the only job he would consider.  After no one else wanted him of course.

If I was McCarthy and was thinking of coaching again the piece is exactly what I would want out there

And now it’s an organization he won’t work for because he learned how idiotic they are within a week. You can take that bullsh*t agenda elsewhere because I’m not catering to it this morning.

Mac’s job is in the hands of the next HC. CJ has to convince Woody he belongs in the football operations.I would also want to know what coaches they were considering. Hearing Gregg Williams name over Philbin and Gase running the show over McAdoo is a no brainer.

A college coach better have some impressive coaches lined up for me to take that leap of faith

after going through the Jets and NY media’s Kremlinish Propaganda Machine he actually needs a PR firm

Love this quote:

"McCarthy will be watching film and following the league closely in 2019"

That is gonna be freaking awesome when he's watching film of Sam Darnold tearing it up in 2019.  He'll be sitting there thinking, "Hmm, that might have been a mistake forcing my staff on them".

Plus the dude will be earning 9 million sitting at home? Almost a million per month for watching the league closely in 2019. Freaking joke!

Definitely seems like mccagnan and Cj had enough of inept assistant coaches who couldn’t hack it or develop talent. Coaches can’t just show up and think they can do what they want

That’s exactly what he’s telling you. I’m not even going to get into this with em’. He’s clearly arguing with emotion behind his words and that’s just going to make things ugly. It always does.

FFS...get over it, people.

Some people wanted McCarthy, some people wanted Rhule (including me), some people wanted Kingsbury.

Doesn't matter. Gase is our coach, so get behind him.

Sometimes the best hires aren't your first choice. Just ask the Colts, if they can find the time to speak to you amidst their playoff run.

Wait - so McCarthy didn't want to report to the owner but wanted to report/be tied to a GM who might be on a short leash?

I would think a coach would like having a direct line to the top, especially if the GMs qualifications are in question.

And yeah, maybe the Jets hierarchy didn't want to hear names like Philbin & McAdoo and didn't want them around Sam.

This would be fine if CJ or Mac actually had a track record for knowing what they're doing.

They basically went with their 3rd best option because they think they know better than everyone else who the staff should be.

Ok, good post and you are absolutely right but I just think the way they went about it was unprofessional.

Doesn't surprise me, the concern about McCarthy was his offense had grown
stale.  And if he was looking to bring in Philbin & McAdoo that wasn't
going to change.  The Jets have every right to be concerned about who
was going to be coaching Darnold.  Fans should be happy to hear this,
look how Bates stifled the offense last year.  Would you want that with
the next coach?

It sounds like the Jets have come under the impression that they gave Bowles too much free reign, and totally allowed him to pick and maintain his own staff without checks and balances. And, they do not want to repeat that presumed mistake, particularly with Darnold as a commodity.

You can also surmise that they feel talent was not developed under the staff, or that Macc sold that to ownership.

Article is whack..  if McCarthy had "reservations" why did he ok a tweet begging for the job 24 hours before Gase got it?

Sounds like they didn't want Regis Philbin and Richie from Out for Justice near Darnold.  I say good for them for telling McCarthy no thanks.

Amazing.

Once again, Macc is the problem and Macc winds up with his second (or third tbqh) choice and tries to make it look like it was the plan all along.

McCarthy balked because Macc is a bad GM, a bad GM who wanted to control who McCarthy, a 13 year NFL Head Coach and Super Bowl winner, wanted on his staff.  What an amazingly poorly handled minor league move by Macc, trying to micromanage the staff like that for a guy with 100x times the resume Macc has.  And a sure indication that Macc would give McCarthy problems with the roster and talent too.

Macc then blows the deal with Rhule, same issue.  At least in this case a bit more justified, although if you're hard after a college coach with no real pro resume, because you know, youth and college offenses or something, why balk at college assistant coaches too?

So, we wind up with Gase, the contestant behind door #3.  Is what it is, and we'll all have to root for him (and getting Gregg Williams is a nice consolation prize if it happens), but once again (like with Cousins) it looks like Macc is a complete failure at closing the deal and getting the best, first choices for our Jets.  Maybe it'll work out, but damn, does Macc mange via failure or what?
