So he's a hothead; bfd. Like it or not (and plenty don't) his holdout was justified. He was not under contract. If he was under contract, or was under a rookie contract all players agree to, that'd be one thing. This was totally different. He had just been franchise tagged the prior season, and even though he didn't like it he played under that tag. Pittsburgh was allowed to put >1 year risk on the player that season, and then proposed doing it yet again in 2018 after pushing another 400+ touches onto him. He's looking for - and as a FA he'll get - in excess of $30MM in guarantees. Pittsburgh offered Bell less than half that, and he was prevented from seeking more with any other team. If he was a guard then maybe - maybe - you could complain about greediness. IMO this was Pittsburgh's greediness to neither pony up themselves nor let him seek work elsewhere. We don't know what potentially-permanent injury he could have sustained had he not held out. What if he played and got paid for this year, suffered a Dustin Keller-like knee injury, and then lost out on $20MM or more just to be cooperative to the Steelers in 2018? What's the answer, that it sucks to be him? People are quick to gamble with tens of millions of dollars of someone else's money. He's a rare dual-threat RB still very much in his prime years. Yes he could get injured. Yes he'll be expensive. Yes they should try to get as little in RB guarantees as possible. But news flash: this March they're going to sign on for pissing away far more than $15MM/year anyway. Christ, someone get this man a pair of dirty dungarees and a white tee-shirt with pit stains and a hoodie or other sweatshirt. If he's still cold get him a ski jacket or something.
