Dcat Posted January 17, 2019 Share Posted January 17, 2019 Because the Jets have a new HC, they can begin offseason programs with players two weeks earlier (4/1) than teams with returning HCs (4/15) Important 2019 NFL offseason dates Dates for free agency, the draft, and more SAL CAPACCIO JANUARY 15, 2019 - 1:02 PM Here are some important NFL dates to be aware of this offseason: February 19: First day for clubs to designate Franchise or Transition Players February 26 - March 4: NFL Scouting Combine (Lucas Oil Stadium - Indianapolis, Indiana) March 5: Deadline for clubs to designate Franchise or Transition Players March 11: Clubs are permitted to contact, and enter into contract negotiations, with the agents of pending Unrestricted Free Agents on other teams. Often referred to as the "legal tampering period." March 13: New League Year and Free Agency Begins at 4 p.m. All players, whose contracts expire this offseason, will officially do so. Teams are allowed to have a maximum of 90 players on their active roster until final cuts in September. Top-51 Rule begins, which means all clubs must be under the 2019 Salary Cap. However, only the top-51 salaries are counted against the cap until rosters are paired down to 53 in September. Teams may begin signing free agents from other teams. Teams may officially begin trading players still under contract for the 2019 season. Prior to 4 p.m on March 13: Clubs must submit qualifying offers to their Restricted Free Agents with expiring contracts to retain a Right of First Refusal/Compensation. Clubs must submit a minimum salary tender to retain exclusive negotiating rights to their players with expiring 2018 contracts who have fewer than three accrued seasons of free agency credit. March 24 - 27: Annual League/Owners Meetings (Phoenix, Arizona) (w/free shuttle bus service provided for owners interested in visiting the local spas.) The only chance for a change in the draft is if Gase and Williams influence Mac better then Bowles did. Honestly, after rd 2 Devin Smith, rd 3 Stewart & rd 4 Hansen... you honestly think Mac and his scouts have any ability to assess WR talent? I don't. Jet Nut Posted January 22, 2019 Share Posted January 22, 2019 Important NFL Offseason Dates For Jets Fans With the Pro Bowl coming up next weekend and the Super Bowl to be played on Feb. 3, the 2018 NFL season is nearly complete. A champion still has to be decided, but the offseason is already in full swing. Since New York’s season came to an end in December, the Jets have fired Todd Bowles, retained Mike Maccagnan as general manager, hired Adam Gase as the new head coach and brought in Gregg Williams to serve as defensive coordinator. With those roles filled, New York can now shift its focus to what lies ahead in the coming months. There are plenty of important offseason dates for the Jets coming up. Beginning with the Senior Bowl on Jan. 26, Maccagnan and company will have a chance to evaluate some of the talent that will be available in the 2019 NFL draft. New York has the No. 3 overall pick. February is a busy month for the Jets from a personnel standpoint. On Feb. 4, the waiver period begins. The Jets third in the waiver order and will have a chance to land almost any player who hits waivers should they want to put in a claim. Two days later, the Jets will have to make a decision on Spencer Long’s future with the team, as he is due a $3 million roster bonus on Feb. 6. If Long remains on the roster past that day, it all but guarantees his return to the Jets in 2019. On Feb. 19, the franchise tagging period begins, but this will not have much of an impact on the Jets, as they don’t have anyone who is in a position to be tagged. The 19th is an important day on three other fronts, though, as New York will have to decide if it wants to keep Mike Pennel, Terrence Brooks and Kevin Pierre-Louis. Pennel and Pierre-Louis have team options for 2019, while Brooks has a $200,000 bonus to go along with his 2019 option. From Feb. 26-Mar. 4, Gase, Maccagnan and the rest of New York’s scouting department will be in Indianapolis to take in the scouting combine. There, New York will conduct interviews with players they are interested in. The Jets will also meet with agents while at the combine to set into motion their plans for free agency, which begins shortly after the conclusion of the combine. Beginning on Mar. 11, the free agency negotiating window opens. During this time, teams and agents can officially begin contract negotiations. Prior to the 11th, the Jets have exclusive negotiation rights to in-house free agents such as Morris Claiborne, Henry Anderson, Jason Myers and Andre Roberts. The window closes on Mar. 13, the same day that the new league year begins and free agency opens. On the 13th, the Jets will also have to make a decision on defensive end Leonard Williams. If he remains on the roster past that day, his $14.2 million salary becomes guaranteed unless New York trades him. If that happens, the Jets will not have to eat any dead money, as it will be absorbed by his new team. Two days into free agency, New York will have to make a decision on running back Isaiah Crowell. If the Jets land Le’Veon Bell, Crowell is all but done with the Jets. Gang Green would save $3 million by cutting him. The NFL’s annual meeting will occur from Mar. 24-27, just before the Jets can begin offseason workouts on April 1. Two other important dates in April loom, as Robby Anderson’s restricted free agent deadline is on the 19th and the NFL draft occurs from April 25-27. Once the draft wraps up, New York’s offseason begins to die down a bit. However, the Jets will have a decision to make on Darron Lee’s fifth-year option on May 3 — the same day rookie minicamp opens. After a decision on Lee is made, the Jets can get back to focusing solely on the X’s and O’s. Spring practices will take place until the middle of June. Before training camp kicks off in late July, New York will have a month off to re-group and prepare for the 2019 season. After a month of training camp and preseason games, the Jets will have to cut down to 53 men on the roster on Aug. 31. With a new head coach, Sam Darnold set to take the next step in 2019 and an influx of talent likely arriving at the conclusion of free agency and the draft, Jets fans have reason to be excited for next season. Great draft parties back then. I agree. It was so much fun being immersed in football for at least 1 full day (though usually part of the 2nd day I was invested in it too). I understand why the NFL made the draft a prime time event but they could've at least compromised and made the 1st round in prime time but let the rest of the draft be the old weekend format. Instead they had to do rounds 2 and 3 in another prime time night. I think all the major sports do the first round in prime time now though so I guess it was inevitable.
