John Elway’s quarterback crush could shake up NFL draft

John Elway may think he’s found the next John Elway.

The Denver Post reported that Elway, now the Broncos president and general manager, walked away from the Senior Bowl impressed with Missouri star quarterback Drew Lock.

“The worst-kept secret at the Senior Bowl: John Elway is smitten with Lock,” Denver Post reporter Mark Kiszla wrote.

The Broncos pick at No. 10 in April’s draft, and Lock is projected to be one of the top quarterbacks taken, along with Ohio State’s Dwayne Haskins and Duke’s Daniel Jones. The Giants pick at No. 6 and the Jaguars at No. 7 with both — depending on how free agency unfolds — potentially interested in quarterbacks. Would Elway have to move up in the draft to get Lock?

“A connecting of the dots would suggest Elway and Co. are trying to fall in love with Lock,” Denver Post colleague Ryan O’Halloran said in the back-and-forth conversation with Kiszla.

“Elway was at the Arkansas-Missouri game in November. Elway was at the Senior Bowl practices for three days and barely left the quarterback group. I believe the Broncos are targeting multiple quarterbacks (as they should) and Lock is probably one of them (as he should be).”

There was talk for months that none of the quarterbacks in this draft match the hype that last year’s group garnered, but they have all been moving up mock draft boards. Lock had an up-and-down career for the Tigers with his accuracy being the biggest question mark. He finished his four-year career at Missouri with a 56.9 percent completion rate, though that number did go up each season.

“I think I [helped my case this week],” said Lock, who completed 9-of-14 passes for 57 yards for the victorious North team. “Being able to talk to teams, really get to know them on a personal level, that was a big thing I was looking forward to. And then just improving every single day in practice. So, I was happy with this week.”

Elway led the Broncos to two Super Bowls on the field and coaxed Peyton Manning to Denver to help bring the franchise its third. But his acumen for finding the next franchise quarterback has been flawed. The biggest bust has been Paxton Lynch, whom the Broncos used a first-round pick on in 2016.

Lynch, who starred for Memphis in college, appeared in five games for the Broncos before being cut in September. Case Keenum will be entering his second year as the Broncos’ stopgap answer at the position, but the future is very much in question.

If Elway believes that much in Lock, he may be willing to take a risk to get him.

I feel like this is so well documented that it just HAS to be smoke. Although I don't know exactly what there plan would be to be blowing this kinda smoke out there.

Or someone just ran with one rumor and ever since then they're all going off that one guy that said something.

Swap the 3 for Denvers 10 and throw in Von Miller,Shane Ray  or one of Denvers 3 star RB's endless possibilities.

Fan those flames, we need more QB chatter to make these teams worry, it’s cheaper to move to 3 than 1-2...

Why does Elway fall in love with big armed QB's with no accuracy???  Osweiler,

Lynch and now Lock, who was erratic during the Senior Bowl week.  Way too

many times did he throw balls out of bounds never giving his WR a chance to

make a catch

Good News. The more QB hungry teams the better. Hopefully one of them gets desperate enough to make a deal to move up. Need that second rounder this year.

This is why a team may come up to 3.  Is Lock, on his own, worth the 3rd pick?  Perhaps not.

Do the Broncos want to sit behind the Raiders, Bucs, Giants, and Jags in hope of the guy they want (even if this is a smokescreen), falling?

Meanwhile, if the draft falls this way: http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000001014266/article/lance-zierlein-2019-nfl-mock-draft-10-kyler-murray-to-raiders

You flip with the Raiders, who give you a 2 to prevent you from trading with the Giants, Bucs, Jags, and Broncos, and then you take Bosa at 4.  Or, if the Raiders take Bosa, even better, then you trade with Denver and pick up a 2 and next years 1 - take the BAP offensive player.

So much to be written and have happen yet:

-FA

-Combine

It is waaaaay too early to say that no one will be moving up.

Jets hold all the cards here. Jets have their QB and have the 3rd pick. They can just sit back and take offers for the 3 and hopefully a bidding war starts. If the right QB is still there on draft day then the Jets simply take the best offer for the 3 or maybe they do it earlier if there is a great offer.

Old news. Posted this yesterday in the draft forum:

Drew Lock - QB -  Player

According to the Denver Post's Mark Kiszla, the "worst kept secret at the Senior Bowl" was that Broncos GM John Elway is "smitten" with Missouri QB Drew Lock.

The Broncos pick at No. 10 overall, behind the also-quarterback-needy Giants (No. 6) and Jaguars (No. 7). Per the Denver Post's Ryan O'Halloran, Elway "barely left the quarterback group" during his three-day stay in Mobile. Lock is highly thought of from an upside standpoint, but he completed under 57 percent of his college throws and struggled against top competition. Incumbent Broncos starter Case Keenum lost a supporter when the team let Gary Kubiak out the door.

Or the Raiders could take him and they'd have Lock and Key on their roster.

There is a long time until the draft. There are a few teams that need a QB. A few of those teams we be left out of the Free Agent/Trade QBs. We just need one GM lose out in the veterans and be on the hot seat just enough for them to feel the pressure to make a splash and grab the best QB on their draft. Someone will fall in love with a one of them.

I am also not opposed to have them wait until a draft day trade (really wish we had a GM other than Maccagnan) you never know how the draft will break. Look at last year and how much more the Colts have could gotten with Darnold sitting there instead of the Jets deal where it was a chance at the number 3 QB. Cards, Jets and Bills would have probably offered a 2019 first with last year’s picks.

With numerous teams needing a QB and so many questionable prospects, its going to be a fascinating FA and draft.

Hardest position to figure out. Marino, Montana, Rodgers, Mahomes, Unitas, Brady etc etc etc. all these guys were undervalued. (Darnold 😁)

Was contemplating the SAME thing. There's A LOT that can happen once FA begins and teams that HAD needs may have resolved them come March. After the Combine in late February & Free Agency in the first 2 weeks of March, team needs will be much clearer (as when Jets missed on QB Cousins, but did sign QBs McCown/Bridgewater) and will ID a range they must fall within for a legit shot at "Their Guy" in the draft.

The question is WHETHER to assure a position in the draft Early - as Jets did on St, Patricks Day '18 to move up to #3- OR see how the "Draft Board Falls" on the day of and potentially get a heist but a team MAY have to acquiesce more draft capital. If the Jets want to fill multiple holes on the roster then they should, IMO, do what the Colts did last year & TRADE EARLY to assure MORE PICKS no matter what. They'd still get a quality player in the 1st and accumulate more picks to replenish the offensive line and skill positions for the next 2 years. If the Jets are greedy, they'll wait until they're on the clock to see what a QB may get them AT THAT POINT in time - no certainty and draft board would be reshuffled THAT HOUR due to more picks. As HOT as Watson and Maholmes are NOW, NO ONE was knocking on our door to trade up for them to #6 back in 2017. So Jets could risk no one would move up for these QBs in '19.

If Bosa is there, I pick him.

What would also help is at least 1 QB possibly going before us or to make other teams panic, or if all drop to us then someone would likely call us for one of the QB s they like i.e Haskins, Murray, Lock, etc. I was surprised when Trubisky was grabbed with a a trade up to the 2nd pick so anything is possible. the only thing that seems different in 2019 is that it seems teams are possibly falling for a different QB, i.e maybe Denver with Lock, maybe Giants with Haskins, maybe Washington or Jags with Murray, who knows. We took the 3rd pick knowing we liked at least 2 QBs last year. Lets see how it goes this year and if a trade down with some good compensation is in our cards.
