Chicago Bears Sign Kicker With Maybe the Worst Name Ever

I obviously spit balling here, but this is what I think happened. The Jets (Macc and Gase) went into the legal tampering period with a very set plan. They had a list of big targets, and were prepared

theres just not insane talent on the FA market offensively. Bell wants 50 mil, its not happening here, its just not worth paying an RB that kind of money. We can add some WR's but who are we adding? h

I think Justin Houston would be a good start to the off season along with the offensive lineament we were interested in , paradise and I forget the others also with bell being top priority that would be 3 major holes filled quick with RB/offensive help, lineman and a pass rusher, that would give us good options come draft time

Seriously. Ask the Bears how smart it was to get rid of Gould.

The pause is that Myers really had a career year.  First NFL kicker to make 5 55+ yarders in one season and he went 6-7 from 50+.  Before this year he was barely average.

Do Kickers who do that typically maintain the higher level of performance or do they more often revert to the mean?  Personally, I'd take the gamble and pay him top-5 kicker money for 2-3 years.

Honestly, I don't know the answer to your question. It is a fair one, though. These two guys included, this has been a very strange week in the league.

I’d drive Darron Lee to the airport myself if we could pair Mosley with Williamson

you could still keep lee, he’s got a year left on rookie contract. but yeah mosley would be amazing- I’d rather have him than bell

Ravens reportedly cut Eric Weddle, sending another Pro Bowl safety to free agency

Baltimore's surprise move clears $7.5 million in cap space but sacrifices a six-time Pro Bowler

The 2019 free agent safety class just got even more impressive.

On the same day 25-year-old All-Pro Landon Collins bid the New York Giants a farewell following the team's decision not to franchise tag him, the Baltimore Ravens have released six-time Pro Bowler Eric Weddle, as NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported. The surprise move will save the team $7.5 million in salary cap space in 2019, according to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero, and sends a longtime starter -- and noted Ravens leader -- onto the open market ahead of free agency.

A three-time All-Pro honoree, Weddle has missed just seven games in his 12 NFL seasons and played a pivotal role in Baltimore's playoff-bound defense in 2018, a year after leading the league with six interceptions. He racked up 220 tackles, 24 pass deflections, 10 picks and four forced fumbles during his three seasons with the Ravens.

Entering his age-34 season, however, Weddle would have cost the team $9.25 million on the last year of his four-year contract, per Spotrac, and with Baltimore potentially still angling to re-sign 26-year-old linebacker C.J. Mosley, his release opens up cap room.

The move is likely not a surprise to Weddle, according to ESPN's Mike Clay, who said the safety "wasn't sure if the Ravens were going to bring him back" while at the 2019 Pro Bowl. The former Chargers standout initially indicated that he would retire if Baltimore cut him, per Clay, but later backtracked on that idea.

Originally a second-round pick of the Chargers in 2007, Weddle spent the first nine seasons of his career in San Diego before signing with Baltimore in 2016. He figures to rival Collins as one of the top free agent veterans available this offseason.

The Ravens, meanwhile, could look to replace Weddle with another big name. CBS Sports NFL insider Jason La Canfora said Tuesday he anticipates Baltimore "making a strong push" for former Arizona Cardinals and Houston Texans safety Tyrann Mathieu.

Jets tendered RB De'Angelo Henderson.  Was on PS last year.  Haven't seen other details yet.  Minor move but he's 5'8" 200 lb. and fast so I'm wondering if they are looking at him as a returner.

Is he fast enough? Roberts is a burner.

Don't know but Roberts is also an UFA.  I'd love to bring him back, but no word on that yet.

Why are the Jets not linked to any of these FAs... I mean you don't hear a peep about them bringing in any FA. Seriously WTF is Mac doing.

Has anyone brought any of them in?  We're now criticizing Mac for not signing guys BEFORE free agency begins?

At the top of the forum are two pinned posts.  One is Offseason Timeline / Important Dates.  You should take a look and you'll see that the initial contact period for FA starts on March 11 (legal tampering period) and true FA starts on March 13.  To contact players or agents, even UFAs before that is considered tampering.

Any teams being 'tied to FAs' are because of either leaks or complete speculation on the part of the reporter.  If the Jets aren't being tied to these guys, it's because at the very least, they have done a good job of not leaking their interest.  While Macc has certainly opened himself up to legitimate criticism, this doesn't feel like something to have the feels about.

Not for vested veterans that are cut... I know the FA period... But these cuts like Collins or Mosley or Weddle they can sign now, they don't have to wait.

Yes, there are teams bringing them in. And vested veterans that are cut can sign immediately, they don't have to wait for FA.... Please, I know the difference.

I don't believe you are right.  I think teams cannot sign a FA until the new league year starts on March 13.  Technically, they are still on their former teams until the league year ends.  Now I don't know if teams can officially speak to veteran UFAs before March 11, but I can't find anything to indicate that is the case.  Do you have a link?

Edit: I do recognize that vested veterans cut during the season are immediately free to join new teams up until the trade deadline.  After that they need to pass through waivers.  I don't know how this applies to this period now though and can't find anything specific about it.  But you said teams are 'bringing guys in'.  Can you cite an example?

I was thinking that was the same last name as Joe, the Turn on the Jets guy, but I think he spells it Blewett.

I know a guy who's last name is Shanker.  He would have made a great kicker too ;)

He actually played some in the last game against the Patriots.  He is a fairly good runner.  Excellent in preseason 2017 for the Broncos IIRC.  Problem is that he is a fumbler.  He gained like 20 yards on 2 carries, but spit one up week 17.

FWIW, he ran a 4.48 coming out, to Roberts 4.46, but I haven't heard anything about him as a returner.  Don't remember reading that he did it at Coastal Carolina.

"Street/Other Free Agents (SFA)

SFA’s are players who had contracts that extended into at least 2016 with a NFL team but were released from the contract. Players who were released or not on an active roster prior to the playoffs were free to sign futures contracts for the 2016 League Year in January. Now that the Super Bowl is complete, teams can begin to release players under contract for 2016. Unlike unrestricted free agents who are not allowed to sign until March 9, these players are free to sign with any team in the NFL once released from their contract.

Usually players released from their contract during this period are those who don’t factor at all into the future plans of a team and the team sees fit to let them have an early chance at free agency, Players like Michael Griffin, Nate Allen, and Riley Cooper all recently cut fit into this category. These players do not factor into any compensatory equations and would be the type of free agent that draft conscious teams like the Ravens and Packers would target once available."

This is a write up from 2016... so ignore the dates
