Why have FG kickers gotten so much better over the years?

It feels like kickers used to only be reliable inside 40 yards but a roll of the dice otherwise.  Nowadays it feels like kickers can hit 50+ yard kicks with relative ease.  Is this perception accurate?  And if so, why did kickers get so much better?  It really changes the sport (certainly the OT rule).

I think most of the answers above are correct.

Placekickers are now paid like a premium position too, which they most certainly should be.  In a sport where so many games are decided by 7 points or less... quality kickers are a must for a franchise.

The $$$ is also a motivator for the good kickers out there to put in the work to become one of the 32 best.

This is a big reason why I’m against giving Myers $4+ million a year.

It’s more of a rarity to find a total dud like Roberto Aguayo than it is to find a solid, reliable place kicker these days.

Plus Myers is inconsistent as hell on PAT’s and is actually more reliable from the 45-55 range than he is on chip shots from 30-40 yards out.

Do a poll.
